But what was to my surprise? When talking with a shy ,sweet and romantic guy who has Vanessa Hudgens and isĀ in love ! Austin opened up with seventeenĀ to discuss Hollywood, his insecurities and his best advice.
We know that you were discovered at a fair when you were younger, tell us how!
What happened was that my half brother had straight hair and fair skin,
So when we were at the fair, he caught the attention of an agent because he was a fair skinned child with afro!
very unusual ( laughs). So we accompanied him to Los Angeles , and at the casting , I was asked if
I wanted to not participate too, and ended up getting the role . Basically this is how I started.
Before that, have you considered acting?
I Was about 12 , so I was not really considering a career yet. I never thought that acting Ā would be something I could do, looked very distant to me., I was very shy, and when I did come out of my shell, it was when I played someone else. I used to dress up as a little old man and go with my momĀ to the mall to see if people believe it, it was at 8 years old. So thatās why I worked on my acting.When I beganĀ to surround myself with more actors ,I realized that I belonged with such people , I felt that I finally fit in.
So it was hard when you were in school?
Yes it was. Fortunately , when finished sixth grade,
I was so shy, I began to be homeschooled .
And that was the same time I started to act, and was more on Ā set .
Then I did the exam to graduate from high school,
and I have not returned to school since.
What advice would you give to those who are going through a bad time in school?
I think my advice would be that all the others are so focused on themselves,
they really do not look much in you as you think. As I grew older I realized it.
So that takes a little pressure off . Everyone is dealing with their own problems.
The more you can love yourself and know that you are Ā enough , you will be happier in your life.
There is only one you, so you have to go out and be your best version .
Talking about your characters , which one did you like best. Sebastian and now Will ( in The Chronicles Shannara ) ?
They are very different characters , Sebastian masked to be the cool kid and even at home had many problems, It was covered and he pretended to be someone else. Will , also has his problems, but it is very fun to play . By the fact that not all is solved and although constantly he is wrong, he is learning . It is very human not know what youāre doing and try to solve it.
What attracted you most Ā to the Shannara chronicles ?
A couple of things! One was the people involved, when we sat down to plan it had aĀ great conversation . I was intrigued ! And second the fact of filming in New Zealand , theĀ horseback riding , to use āmagicā.
That attracted the child within me, I wanted to go and be the hero
Do you like fantasy & magic series and movies?
Yeah ! Iām Ā a super fan of Lord of the Rings and Star Wars .
While growing up, they Ā were my favorite movies .
Growing up in an industry like Hollywood , Do you feel like you matured faster?
I feel like I grew up differently , Not to going to school and being surrounded by kids my age . I was always surrounded the adults, and felt since I was a child that I was part of their group.
So I immersed myself completely in this world , I did not like the same things as the children of my age.Ā It is a very rare industry sometimes (laughs)
You have an incredible style , Is fashion Ā something that interests you ?
Yes I love it. I like it because youāre the canvas and instead of paint ,
you use fabrics and colors.
What would be your ideal trip ?
Ugh , there are many ways it could be perfect , but I think traveling ,
I like to adventure . So perhaps a road trip with a polaroid, do things youāve never done . And itās better when itās with people you love ,
friends, family and my dog āā(Darla).
