unfortunately I feel like a lot of people tend to do a disservice to Carnigorm's character
the big thing with Carnigorm is the lack of agancy they had since their literal creation. Most of their very long life was them being controlled, both literally and metaphorically. This is a pretty big part of their character, but I dont think some readers internalize how much this affected Carn's meanlty.
even Phos plays a part in this, which is why I think a lot of people get upset at "new Carn." Trust me, phos is a character who you, rightfully, want to route for, but Ichikawa definitely goes out of her way to show that Phos isn't without flaws. No matter how comedic it was portrayed, Phos was definitely not a good compainion towards Carnigorm. And I feel like a lot of people dont give Carn enough credit about how much they they were willing to sacrifice, becuase thats all they hav even known.
overall, a lot of the characters Carn grew to dislike/ become nuertual to was because of how they felt about their overall situation. It wasn't 100% about Phos, Ghost, Lapis, etc. but rather the situation that they and seemingly the universe itself put Carn through. That's what makes Carnigorm's situation so beautiful yet traic. It doesn't really matter if the reader or characters are happy with Carn's decisions because what matters is that Carn GETS to make that decision. Even if they were still being controlled, right up to the end .....well, all least they got to be happy....
