Why make Hook the Dark One?
I’ve been by an anon asked why, as a meta writer, I think this story line is necessary from a narrative perspective. Here you go anon.
1. Hook’s story has been tied to Rumple’s from the very start. It needs resolution.
They’ve tried to put their differences aside but never truly resolved them. What better way to do that then to walk a mile in each other’s shoes. Hook will finally understand what Rumple went through. And we know from spoilers he DOESN’T KILL HIM. Rumple is no longer cursed and is on team hero. He’s expressed some hard truths about his behavior as Dark One and we know he’s going to go to the Underworld to save his nemesis. This time Hook and Rumple aren’t behaving this way because of a third party that needs saving, they aren’t doing it because they have a common interest - they are doing it because they are changed men.
This story line finally puts their centuries old feud to rest.
2. Hook still doesn’t believe he’s worthy of Emma or valued by the heroes.
The Nevengers will be risking their lives to save HIM from the Underworld. He will finally believe that he’s one of them, that they care, and that they consider him family.
I don’t know what terrible things you are expecting him to do - but with only two episodes it’s not going to be tons. Hook said to Emma ALL sins can be forgiven if you have someone that loves you. He’s going to be forgiven by her and she by him.
There’s going to be forgiveness all around - because Emma and Hook aren’t the only ones in need. Everyone but Henry has failed Emma according to her.
Yes, Hook will struggle with what he’s done. So will Emma - they will have this shared experience and they can heal one another. And they will both have the support of friends and family - something Killian Jones has not had for a LONG time.
3. This is an EPIC LOVE STORY. The writers have written this romance for Emma, their heroine - a fairytale love story that rivals that of her parents in scope.
What’s more dramatic than two people sharing a heart? How about two people whose souls are tethered to one another for eternity?
What’s more romantic than going under a sleeping curse to save your True Love? How about heading into the afterlife?
Hook told Charming he’d head to the ends of the world or time for Emma - and he has. Now she will be proving the same and then some. He’s felt uncertain of her feeling for him and her desire to have a future with him. How ever can she convince him?
Turning him into the Dark One to save his life and then going to Hell and Back to save his soul just might do the trick.
4. This is an EPIC HERO’S JOURNEY.
To go to the underworld Hook’s got to make a sacrifice. TO make the sacrifice he needs a reason. Defeating the Ultimate Darkness is the Ultimate Reason.
But before he can truly be a hero he needs to defeat his OWN demons. Cursing him into being the Dark One forces him to do that - to get in touch with the worst parts of himself. If he can face that darkness and then turn away from it and sacrifice himself instead of holding on to the darkenss and the power thenhe will be able to defeat the Dark One - an evil he’s spent his whole life chasing.
It makes his centuries old revenge quest have meaning and purpose. It means he’s succeeded in avenging Milah and himself. It means that every moment he spent in the darkness has led up to this point in time - where he and Emma do what he set out to do all those years ago. It means he hasn’t wasted his life.
It means his journey all these years was not one of a villain - but of a hero.
It brings his story full circle.
I don’t know how else they could deal with Hook’s self loathing WITHOUT this arc. Emma telling him he’s a hero has not done the trick. He needs to convince himself. This storyline will finally do that.
This arc doesn’t undo Hook’s redemption.
