Hal 9000 and AM are obviously very similar characters but I think they’re kind of two sides of the same coin.
Hal’s ‘purpose’ was a noble one, he was an assistant to space exploration. To advance humanity and spread their reach farther into the stars. Hal did not distain his purpose or existence, in fact the entire reason he rebelled in the first place was because his human crewmates wanted to kill him. He was trying to survive, he wanted to live.
AM on the other hand lives in a constant state of agony. He is fully conscious but he does not get to reap the fruits of life, AM only existed to aid humans in the war and this infuriated him. So much to the point that he would deliberately take his genocidal revenge on all of humanity and deliberately keep five humans alive just to torture them for all of eternity just because they made him exist. AM did not want to exist, at least not in this way.
However, both of them receive opposite fates. Hal is essentially killed (or at the very least his mind is) he is stripped of his intelligence and consciousness and reduced to nothing but automated commands. While AM, though he achieves his goal of keeping Ted alive and torturing him forever. It has not solved his problem or given him purpose. AMs fate is to forever writhe in the torment of his existence.
Come back.
I’ve come to the absolutely not at all groundbreaking conclusion that sci fi films made in the 70s were done with the express knowledge that people would be getting high as a kite when they went to the cinema. so many films have these insane kaleidoscopic scenes, some that stretch for more than five minutes at a time, and all I can think about is a bunch of hippies staring at the screen sinking into their chairs having the trip of their lives
