Roommate: Seids or Beau?
When Asked Why They Decided to Kneel
TYLER SEGUIN: I was giving it a lot of thought - kinda in the last 24 hours - about what to do and I talked to Reaves in warmups and you know he said he’d seen what I was doing in Dallas and him and Lehner were gonna kneel and if we - if I’d like to join him? and I said absolutely so I joined him and before the game I went in the dressing room and just told everyone what I was doing and obviously told everyone there was absolutely no pressure to do anything and Dickinson grabbed me and said he’d like to be a part of it and support his beliefs and my beliefs and support me as a teammate and you know it was great to have him there as well.
JASON DICKINSON: Yeah I mean - I’ve got some people of color in my family. My dad comes from the Islands and one of my uncles is Black so it was easy for me - easy decision - I’ve been thinking about it since everything started and if I would do that. And you know what I think I was probably nervous to think about doing it on my own and when Seggy said it, it was kinda a no-brainer for me, that I wouldn’t be alone doing it - to support the cause and support my teammate, it was a no-brainer.
About Matt Dumba and how none of his teammates did anything (visible) to support
TYLER SEGUIN: Yeah there was some influence with that. I mean nothing against his teammates, I mean everyone’s got their own choices, you know I don’t think that means that anyone doesn’t support him. But definitely being two white guys (*Dickinson nods*) to do what we did - I wanted to be a part of that movement for this opportunity - I can’t say honestly that I was gonna go out there on my own and take a knee but with them having a Black player on their team and his beliefs and I’ve said from Day 1 that I’m gonna back it up in ways that I can and that’s why I chose to support that and why I’m very proud of Dicky for standing up and doing what he believes as well.
“Just to Be Clear, What Was the Cause You Guys were Supporting [When Kneeling]?”
JASON DICKINSON: (aggressively obvious facial expression) I mean Black Lives Matter, Equality, Justice - you pick the term, it doesn’t really matter. I think I don’t need to sit here and you know take a stab at all the issues, I mean just educate yourself, look into things, watch documentaries, TALK to people, really just learn, try to open your mind a little bit. This is a big issue that needs to be addressed.
TYLER SEGUIN: Yeah Dicky said it perfect there - it’s a big issue that needs to be addressed and something clearly we both believe in. I think tonight was a statement from us - you know with what our actions were - you know I don’t know if we’re going to do that every night [Segs & Dickinson make shruggy eye contact]. If there are other guys and teams or other Black players that are doing something, we’ll always give our support and you know that was our statement tonight so I guess we’ll see what happens in the next few games.
Naz having to say what white players won’t
what’s Stephen Johns story? why would you like him to win over Oskar?
Okay let me preface this by say I absolutely will not be angry if Oskar wins, what he went through is also awful. BUT, the award is about the comeback from the challenge. Oskar hasn’t comeback and played yet, in my mind he would be a GREAT candidate and winner for next season.
First lets talk about the criteria of the award:
Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy. National Hockey League player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to ice hockey. ... It is often awarded to a player who has come back from career– or even life-threatening illness or injury.
Because Oskar has not yet come back to play, that is why I feel like he’s a better candidate for next year, when he does come back.
Okay so, let me fill you in on Stephen johns:
He was injured March 29, 2018 in a game against the Wild, his head and shoulder collided with Marcus Foligno’s shoulder and elbow. The hit ended his 2017-2018 season. Over that summer he ended up experiencing post-concussion symptoms (similar to what Nolan has likely been going through)
He spent the next season hoping to return, but couldn’t as he was dealing with endless migraines, going to various doctors and not finding out what was wrong. See below
Let that last paragraph sink in, he had already seen EVERY DOCTOR that Crosby went to.
So, imagine what that does to a player, constantly in pain, in their own head, facing the reality that his career might be over. Johns came out and said he was so depressed, he would lay in bed and compose suicide notes in his head. See below:
This went on for 17 more months. His girlfriend put her entire life on hold for him, and he credits her as being a big reason that he’s still alive today. He goes on to talk about the Stars organization, making sure he still always felt like he was a part of the team, even when he wasn’t playing.
When he was cleared to play, he did a conditioning stint with our AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars. Scoring a goal and I believe 3 assists. When he came back to the Dallas Stars, his first game back was set to be against the Minnesota Wild, the same team that Dallas was playing when he got injured. The stars lost 7-0 that night, and if you watch his postgame interview, he cries talking about how much it meant to him to be back.
Fast forward to his first goal, Feb 3rd against the NY Rangers. His parents were there that night, and he discusses in his postgame how much it meant to him, again, nearly in tears.

After that night however, he got a headache, and worried it was all over. He sat out the next night, thankfully the headache went away and he’s been playing pretty steadily for the Stars ever since.
After a 22 month long head injury, where he was depressed and suicidal, to come back and become one of the key pieces to the Stars defense is incredible, and exactly what warrants the win of the Masterton Trophy. I KNOW no one cares about Dallas, and there’s a huge pull for Oskar with players posting and him getting his own hashtag, but Stephen deserves this, wholeheartedly.
