Hey just a quick little psa reminder that the radqueer community is actively continuing to grow at a very alarming rate, and we should all probably be slightly more aware about how to deal with them because this community goes way beyond just stupid internet discourse and can legitimately put vulnerable people in very real danger.

Out of curiosity i checked radqueer tag here on tumblr (the primary platform for the rqc) maybe 5ish months ago and it was sitting at 10k followers. I checked again earlier today and it's currently at 13k, so yes it is currently growing. I don't say this to fear monger or anything, I absolutely do not believe radqueers have any actual chance of normalizing the things they support on any significant scale irl, anyone who tries to say otherwise is very out of touch with reality. However, the online spaces the community inhabits do, without a doubt, harbor abusers and predators, and create an environment that is ideal for grooming to occur. Radqueer discord servers often state that they are "safe spaces" for both pedophiles and minors. I have seen a lot of radqueers advocating their beliefs that kids can consent to romantic/sexual relationships with adults, that incest should be decriminalized, that it's okay to be a fascist so long as you're "doing it in a queer way" (whatever the fuck that means), that sex offenders should not face any legal or social repercussions for their crimes, and more. What's worse is that the majority of radqueers are kids, from what Ive seen most are between 12-15. These are kids who feel alone and outcasted in their real lives, either because their families are abusive or neglectful, they're queer and live somewhere hostile towards them, they're neurodivergent and struggle to connect with peers, or all three. They turn to the radqueer community because they don't feel like they have anywhere else to go, and from there they are pulled deeper into the ideology.

This most definitely isn't a call to action to go harass radqueers. All Im saying is that if you have a kid, a younger sibling/relative, a friend, or really anyone who might be part of a marginalized group of people and feeling isolated and misunderstood, please check in on them. Look for potential red flags like kandi or pins with pride flags you don't recognize or spending large amounts of time on social media and being secretive about their accounts. Basically all Im saying is that we should stay vigilant and be willing to offer help to those who need it, because large amount of these people are victims themselves.

I’m one of those people who likes being educated on practically everything, so can someone explain to me the difference between a Therian and an Otherkin?

Denotatively (ie, in terms of strictly the definitions):

Therian = someone who identifies as an animal (sometimes you'll see this defined as earthen animals only, but this is historically not necessarily part of the label - if it's animalistic, it qualifies)

Otherkin = someone who identifies as nonhuman (be that animal, plant, sapient nonhuman people, object, concept, etc.)

Connotatively (ie, in terms of associations and cultural nuances), there are some cultural distinctions as well. The therian and otherkin communities actually arose completely independently, and only later started interacting so closely that in many ways they've nearly merged.

The otherkin community originates from a few separate groups of elves, namely the Silver Elves and the Elf Queen's Daughters, both of whom originate somewhere in the 1970s (exact dates often difficult to pin down) and which then led to the Elfinkind Digest, a mailing list originally intended for elves but which quickly expanded to other nonhuman beings, within which the term otherkind (which would rapidly become otherkin, as far as I can tell due to typographical errors that accidentally got preserved in the lexicon) was coined to avoid the inconvenience of having to write elfin-/dragon-/orc-/hobbit-/etc-kind constantly within the Digest. The influence of these groups and communities has meant the otherkin community has always had heavy influence from New Age and neo-pagan philosophies, and has always leaned toward spiritual explanations - though certainly never exclusively.

The therian community, on the other hand, originates from a messaging board called alt.horror.werewolves, often abbreviated to AHWW within the therian community these days, in the early 1990s. While this messaging board was originally a fansite for werewolves, at a certain point people started turning up who felt themselves to be (were)wolves under the skin, and gradually that kind of discussion took over much of the board. (Not just wolves, either - some of the earliest weres I remember seeing in logs include a bat and, of course, the now-famous werePontiac.) If you've ever seen animal-people, particularly older ones, calling themselves weres instead of/in addition to therians, this is why - that was the original word we used for the concept. Culturally speaking, the therian community has always been very focused on the concept of shifts because of these origins - it is, if I'm not mistaken, where the otherkin community adopted that terminology from. The therian community also tends to be more focused on the animality of being non-human - which is why these days that's usually used as the primary distinction between otherkinity and therianthropy.

Ultimately, there's a lot of overlap, but there are also a lot of reasons why someone might want to use one word or the other even if both could theoretically apply to them denotatively.

Werewolf mental shifts are definitely the most common kinds shifts I get. They can be triggered by a variety of things like listening to specific music, eating meat, being out in the forest, being around other alterhumans or seeing another person act in an animalistic way, being in the dark, but especially seeing a full moon will almost always trigger one.

The feelings that come with the shift itself kind of depends on where I was or what I was doing when it started, but generally they're pretty distinct. I'll get chills all over my body, which will make me sort of shake my head a little bit. It will feel like the front of my face has elongated into a short snout-like shape and my canine teeth have grown into fangs. I can still speak, but doing so feels more unnatural than usual. When I do talk, my voice gets slightly deeper and more like, calm I guess? During more intense shifts I'll have a ton of extra energy, it will feel almost like a mini adrenaline rush. I can run longer than normal and recover from tiredness quicker. I feel physically stronger and more energized. If I was alone or out in public when the shift happened I become sort of misanthropic, and will have a strong desire to be away from humans and human made things. If I was with close friends or family when I shifted, most of the time I'll want to rough house with them or play "hunting" games like tag or hide and seek. I tend to develop a sense of prey drive towards whatever or whoever is closest (this is usually where tag comes in lol) and I might start craving meat. I start to think predominately in emotions and images, rather than in words or a voice in my head. I feel more in touch with my instincts, which makes it harder to suppress the urge to vocalize. My gait will also change sometimes. Instead of walking normally I crouch down and hunch over ever so slightly, trying to walk as quietly as possible as if i were stalking something. My eyes widen a bit to help me be alert of my surroundings and I feel much more tapped into all of my senses.

From an outside perspective, if you were really paying attention you might be able to tell something was out of the ordinary with me, but for the most part Im able to stay subtle about it. Overall shifts are very enjoyable experiences for me, so long as Im not having to try and resist them due to being in public or something.

Therianthropy is not voluntary, you POSER! You’re just otherpaw!” Hey. You can willingly be an animal. You know that right? Therianthropy isn’t the only form of being an alterhuman. We should educate people on labels they can use instead of assuming they are malicious.

it's so bizarre to see how vibrant and diverse and flourishing the alterhuman community and its culture is, both online and off, and to have the opportunity to be involved in it myself, but also knowing that the overwhelming majority of people i interact with on a day to day basis have absolutely no idea it even exists at all. it almost feels like im living a double life sometimes
