We keep mentioning how transspecies as a term has existed long before the radqueer & transID communities formed, and started claiming it as part of those communities despite it's actual usage within nonhuman/fictional/unusual human species identifying spaces and objections from said spaces.

Not only did the word transspecies come first, transID terms were actually derived from it! The terms transID people use were created by trolls back in like 2012 to mock otherkin; I actually have some of those first posts archived on my old blog because I used to collect the weirder or funnier troll posts for fun. Stuff like "transfat" and "transabled" (or "trans" with any other suffix people could think of) were commonly used by anti-otherkin for a while to make fun of the term transspecies, and those terms weren't used unironically until much later.

The transID phenomenon is functionally built on the backs of 2010's anti-otherkin trolls, which honestly says everything about how I feel about it.

One correction: transabled was first used sincerely. Transabled.org (now defunct) started in 2005 as a personal blog, and grew into a community for people with BIID; I don't know if Sean, the site's owner, coined the term, but it seems fairly likely. It has no relation to trolling, otherkin or transIDs.

Since it's pride month, I wanted to talk a little bit about one of my more "controversial" labels and why I chose it (controversial is in quotations because irl most people dont really care, but some people online get pretty worked up over it so yk), which is the "mspec lesbian" label!

For some background, I realized I wasnt straight when I was about 13, and I started calling myself a lesbian soon after. I stuck with that label for a few years, but then dropped it for a couple years in mid high school after getting into a relationship with a transmasc person. During that time, I just went by queer/unlabeled. After we broke up, I went through a small sexuality crisis. I liked the "queer" label, but unlabeled wasn't quite right, because my brain kept telling me that "lesbian" was the right label, no matter how much I fought it. Eventually I stopped fighting it and settled on lesbian/dyke/queer/mspec lesbian.

So why do I feel it's the right label for me? Im attracted to pretty much all types of genders and gender expressions, im not picky, except for cisgender men or people who present within a masculine binary. Deep, masc voices and facial hair are my two biggest turn offs. The idea of being with a cis man in any way is literally repulsive to me, I don't even want to be associated with the idea of it. If I really wanted to, I could call myself bisexual, since I am attracted to some kinds of men (transmen/transmascs/multigenders). But for me, labels are meant to be practical tools for easily communicating with people in as few words as possible, and finding people with similar experiences. Regardless of whatever the "technical" definition is, the reality is that if you go out into the world and tell people you're bisexual, 9/10 times they're going to take that to mean you're interested in both cis women and cis men. That's not the case for me. Im only interested in dykes and transgenders and I want people to know that right out the gate. Technically, "lesbian" doesn't quite cover all of that either, since most people do define it as wlw or nmlnm, but it gets me closer to what I want people to know about me than bisexual does. If I had it my way actually I would probably just use dyke as a full time label, but Im pretty sure doing that would draw more negative attention to me than Id like. And Im sure there is some microlabel out there that would get me even closer, but again, if Im going to use labels at all they need to be practical and microlabels almost never accomplish that irl. I also find I resonate more with lesbian history, culture, and individual experiences than any other label Ive explored so far.

So no, me calling myself a lesbian while also being attracted to trans dudes is not a sign I secretly see them as girls. Im transmasculine myself, I get it. And if I were to ever pursue a transmasc person again I would be upfront about my identity and why I call myself what I do from the beginning, and if they were like "Im still not really comfortable with that" then I would stop immediately. I do not fw lesbians who get into relationships with trans guys just to feminize them and treat them like their "masc girlfriends" or whatever. If a transmasculine person doesn't want to be with a lesbian because it doesn't feel right for them, then I 1000% support that!

everytime i hear someone say pride month "isn't necessary" anymore i think about this girl i was friends with in high school who was pretty openly bisexual (and maybe questioning transgender?) and all of her friends were eccentric queer theater kids, and then one day she just stopped talking to all of us and no one heard from her for weeks, and eventually we found out she went deep back into the closet because she was scared of her aggressively homophobic family finding out that she was hanging out with us and being outed. the last time i saw her she had drastically changed her fashion style to be significantly more feminine and "basic" than before and wouldn't even make eye contact with me. it's been several years but i genuinely still think about her a lot and hope she's doing okay

Ive been questioning my wildebeest theriotype a bit lately. One of the main things that led me to kinfirming it was that in high school I would have migratory instincts during the spring, the overwhelming urge to travel long distances on foot in a certain direction, following the rains. However, since Ive been out of high school Ive noticed those instincts fade pretty significantly, and Im starting to think that what I believed to be migratory instincts was actually a sort of "zoochosis". I love warm weather and I love rain, spring is my favorite season. My high school had almost no windows in any of the classrooms and was total sensory hell for me, so it would make sense that being cooped up inside a big cement box 7 hours a day during my favorite season would be fairly distressing.

Even so, I still feel some instincts I associate with being a wildebeest, so idk if I can completely rule it out. The idea of living nomadically within a large group (herd) is still very appealing to me, I feel very paranoid and exposed when Im alone and doing something that could leave me vulnerable (ex. eating or sleeping), and the idea of being able to graze feels right in someway. Most significantly though, when I look at pictures of wildebeest there's still a pretty strong feeling of "yeah that's me".

I may have to do some more digging, Im not sure if the instincts/urges I have are specific enough to be attributed solely to wildebeest. I know there is some debate about this, but personally I am a believer that having involuntary instincts and/or shifts is a required aspect of the therian label, in addition to involuntarily identifying as a particular species. I experience shifts of my werewolf/wolfblood, coyote, african wild dog, and conceptkin kintypes (plus occasional dog ((and what I think are dragon??)) cameo shifts) on a regular to semi infrequent basis, but I don't think Ive ever had one for wildebeest before, so that makes things tricky to understand sometimes.

im very happy transfem jax is canon but im kinda pissed she took up like 60% of the entire screentime. ive been a jax hater since day fucking 1 and her being a woman only makes me hate her slightly less. i am glad she didn't get a happy ending like the rest of the characters did, she treated everyone like utter garbage despite being shown genuine kindness again and again and having a shitty home life + internalized transphobia doesn't make up for that idc. other than that though i did like it and thought it was a good finale, it was so cute seeing so many people in cosplay at the theater i don't think ive seen a theater that full in literal years

Im extremely lucky that pretty much everyone in my life is accepting of my alterhumanity in at least some capacity. Whether Ive actually told them "hey im a therian, i identify as an animal", or they know that im a furry (im pretty open about it irl), or they just kinda get the sense there's something not quite entirely human about me in some way, all of my close friends and immediate family members have been very supportive of me, even if they do tease me for some things here and there.

Having said that, there's still a certain ache in knowing that they'll never fully understand what it's like to be alterhuman, and that they'll never truly see me as the species I am. Therianthropy doesn't define me as an individual, Im much more than just that, but it's still a massive part of my day to day life and hugely influences the way I see the world, and it probably always will. For me, it's just as prevalent in my life as being transgender or autistic. Those things are more well understood and widely accepted, and a lot of people in my social circles fall into one or both of those categories as well. The number of alterhumans I know irl is a fraction of that, and I would still consider myself on the higher end of the spectrum for how many I know compared to others. I know I should just talk to them about it, but I'm so used to keeping my alterhumanity palatable that trying to start a conversation about it with humans always feels awkward and clumsy, and it's come to be something I avoid whenever possible. I guess Im hopeful that in the years to come alterhuman identity will become more understood among the general public, the community has already exploded in ways I would have never thought possible only 5 years ago. But for the time being it just feels a bit lonely sometimes :/

My own mom has learned about therianthropy from someone other than me lmao

Like a month or so ago, my mom called me over to talk with her and my sister in our living room. The conversation wasn't even about therianthropy, but apparently one of her coworkers has a child, a 5th grader i think, who recently told her (my mom's coworker) that they were a nonbinary lesbian, and she came to my mom to ask for advice on how to respond to them coming out since she knows my mom has an older nonbinary kid (me). So my mom basically just told me what she had told her coworker and asked me if she had given good advice and if there's anything i would have personally added, overall a very chill conversation. But she also threw in there that the child, as well as most of their friends its sounds like, identify as therians. My mom remarked that she had never heard that term before and had to google it with my sister lol. It was just a very odd experience, i haven't explicitly told them im a therian because i honestly have never felt the need to, they've always been very accepting of me and my animalistic quirks so putting a label on it has never felt necessary. It was jarring hearing it come out of their mouths for the first time though. I asked my mom about it and luckily it sounds like the coworker is also accepting of therians, according to my mom she has a degree in psychology or something so has pretty much seen it all and is very open minded.

It makes me extremely happy to know there's some 10 year old nonbinary lesbian therian running around my city somewhere with a little pack of therian friends, truly what a time to be alive

How did you become involved with you local therian community?

honestly i got lucky mostly lol. ive been in a pack since i was about 17, my first irl therian friend and packmate i met by chance through a mutual friend of ours at the time, another was a coworker (if i had a nickle for everytime one of my coworkers turned out to be a therian, id have two nickles, which isnt a lot but it's weird that it's happened twice), and the others i met through social media and eventually met up with in person. the non-pack specific therian community in my area is pretty new, less than a year old, but it was actually another tumblr user who recognized something i had posted here that was local to us and worked out that we lived in the same area, and invited me to start coming to the meets they were organizing! since then ive just been going to meets whenever i have the availability to. im hoping to "recruit" more therians to the community this summer, there's a lot where i live it's just about getting the word out that there's stuff being organized now
