ignoring people is self care
I’m proud of me because I’ve survived the days I thought I couldn’t
my parents taught me love is threatening to leave your family in another country, or packing up and looking in your crying daughters eye’s as she’s begging you to stay as you get on a greyhound bus and leave them in another city. breaking down doors, or kicking in the side of cars. cheating on them with someone you work with, and driving recklessly when you’re angry. my parents taught me that love is angry. i wanted so badly for you to be the person that taught me that love isnt that. love isn’t panic. love isn’t hurt, love isn’t scary. love doesn’t mean yelling, and breaking things. love isn’t crying in the bathroom. i wanted so badly to learn that the version of love i grew up with wasn’t how it is supposed to be. i wanted to learn that love felt safe and warm.
- texts i never sent
I sacrificed so much to make you my everything, while you never lifted more than a finger in return. If i have learnt anything, it’s that you can’t force love. You can’t force anything. And that’s when I realized that I was worth more. That forcing you to be more was only helping me realize that I had never been enough for myself.
Is it just me or does anyone else just feel like maybe it’s not worth it? All the fighting. All the sleepless nights. All the times you haven’t felt like yourself. Or the ones that you’ve tried so hard to be somebody else. Is it just me or does it get really fucking exhausting trying not I be enough for everybody but yourself?
Put yourself first and I am going to gaurentee that you’ll find something so much better than just a body to lay next to.
Stop putting him first. Stop telling him yes when you really want to say no. Stop asking him if he still cares when you feel with every ounce of your body that he doesn’t. Stop making excuses for him when he doesn’t show up for you. Stop trying to be someone else because he constantly compares you. Stop believing him when you know he isn’t telling the truth. Stop letting him tell you that your feelings are invalid. If you feel it you feel it. Stop putting yourself on the side for someone who does the same to you.
Why do I keep believing him? Why do I keep coming back and hoping that things will be different? Why do I keep praying that he’ll prove me wrong for once? Why do I keep making excuses and apologizing when I should just walk away? Why am I drawn to the very thing that I know will break me over and over again?
I’ve started to realize where I stand in this relationship. That if it’s not me always pulling the strings, always putting in the effort then there’s nothing. I gave myself a weekend. To focus on myself and to let him do the work. And I wasn’t really surprised when nothing else has changed. I still didn’t see him, we didn’t hang out and he still wasn’t texting me. That’s when I realized that it had been me all along. That a relationship is supposed to be a two-way street; And ours was just a one-way.
I think I will always wonder if I could’ve done more. If I could’ve tried harder, made him feel a little more special. I always wonder if that would’ve changed anything. Because when I look back on it I know I put everything that I fucking had into the relationship. And that still wasn’t enough. I still wasn’t enough.
I keep hoping you’ll show up for me. The way I’ve always wanted you too. But you didn’t. And you won’t.
The hardest part isn’t letting go. The hardest part isn’t the break up. The hardest part is when you come to the realization that there isn’t going to be a next time.
Anis Mojgani, In the Pockets of Small Gods
We could have been happy. I know that, and it is perhaps the hardest thing to know.
