Herbs for Lucid Dreaming

Lucid dreaming is a phenomenon in which the body rests but the mind does not. In other words, you dream, but you are aware of that fact. Through this, dreams can be manipulated, and with practise, even controlled. Lucid dreaming can be achieved through several different methods, but I find that the best way it is done is with the use of herbs.

Herbs for lucid dreaming:

Calea Zacatechichi: Likely the most well known herb for dreaming, the Mexican Dream Herb brings about clearer, more wild dreams. A feeling of well-being accompanies after drinking tea, infusion, tincture, or smoking, as well as a clearer head the next day. Keeping an intention in mind is helpful when using this herb as you fall asleep. It is often used in ritual to meet spirit guides in dreams, too!

Mugwort: This is my favourite dreaming herb. It has been and is used in many different cultures for lucid and prophetic dreams and astral travel. Some users report having darker dreams that reveal hidden insights and core wounds, helping them to find closure. It helps you enter and stay for long periods of time in a conscious dream state and promotes REM sleep. It also brings more brilliant and longer dreams!

Heimia Salicifolia: Sun Opener Herb is another name for this powerful dream/sleep herb. It is known widely for enhancing memories as you dream and was regarded as scared by the Aztecs for this. It also causes yellowing of the vision, prophetic visions during sleep, and altered acoustic perception. Other effects include a feeling of well-being, heavy feeling limbs, floating thoughts, calmness, relaxation, and reduced pain. Some people have used this herb for a mild high*, though it is nonaddictive.

Celastrus Paniculatus: The herb commonly known as Intellect Tree is regarded in India as a sacred medicine for memory enhancement and therefore helps with dream recall. Take it in conjunction with other dream herbs so you remember your experience more sharply.

Salene Capenis: Also known as Xhosa Dream Root, its roots are traditionally used by shamans to promote lucid dream states in healers and other shamans during initiation ceremonies. It is noted as a “teaching plant” that is considered highly sacred.

Nymphaea Caerulea: This is another nonaddictive herb that is used often times for a mild high*. It promotes a deeper and more restful sleep, better dream recall, and more intense visual imagery during dreams. This herb is typically consumed in teas, elixir extracts, or by smoking it.

Asparagus Racemoses: Tian Man Dong is known well for spirit alignment. Known also as ‘Shatawari’, ‘Wild Asparagus Root’, ‘The Flying Herb’, and ‘Heavenly Spirit Herb’ this delicate white flower is said to open the heart and cause dreams about things upon the heart and soul. The Chinese say it effective to help one fly through the universe at night, achieving magnificent dreams and moving in alignment with the spirit

Entada Rheedii: Or more commonly, African Dream bean, is traditionally used in African medicine to induce vivid dreams and enable communication with the spirit world. Entada facilitates entry into the dream world, and promotes increased REM awareness. This makes it easier for the sleeper to realise that they are dreaming and thus gives them an edge in achieving lucidity. This herb contains several active compounds, essential oils and alkaloids.

Witchcraft is a Skill: Reminders

🔮That means it requires work and effort to get good at it.

🔮Just like you wouldn’t expect yourself to become a master violin player or a master chef in a short period of time, don’t expect to be immediately amazing at witchcraft.

🔮Some people have innate abilities that help them learn skills faster, but that doesn’t make them any better than someone who takes longer to learn. And even those with innate abilities have their weak spots and struggles.

🔮The more you practice and study, the better you will get at it. Just go at your own pace, be proud of your progress, and focus on improving your weak spots.

🔮Don’t beat yourself up if you can’t practice as frequently as you’d like. Do what you can and do your best.

🔮Sometimes witchcraft is difficult. That’s normal. Overcoming these challenges instead of quitting will improve your craft. Embrace challenges.

🔮If something in your craft isn’t working, try something new.

🔮There is always, always something new to learn. Never lose that initial spark or excitement that made you practice witchcraft in the first place. If you find yourself getting bored, try to specialize in a certain area. Research lore. Develop your own UPG.

Modern witchcraft is a fascinating phenomenon

It’s fascinating the way modern witchcraft is this giant amalgam of old and new traditions. Like, we have witches who are getting super into crystals and Buddhist meditation. Witches who keep their BOS online and do things like make sigils under their nail polish. Witches who embrace ancient shamanistic practices of earth worship and animism, and witches who use modern technology to work their magick. Witches who worship Frida Kahlo. Witches who worship the most primordial earth goddesses. Witches who worship no one.

We’re quickly approaching a new era (the Fourth Turning, as some describe it), and our renewed interest in magick, spiritual fulfillment, and the spirit world reflects that. The old ways of magick-working still run through our veins, calling us back to a time when we heeded our inner magick and the world of spirits all around us. And our unique expressions of witchcraft perfectly sum up how diverse and pervasive this desire to connect with our inner power is.

Witchcraft isn’t “fake” if it incorporates new elements from all across cultures. Witchcraft evolves and changes with the human race. As we grow, so does our craft. Keep on being yourself and shaping your craft based on what YOU feel is powerful and awe-inspiring.

Don’t ever feel stupid or “not good enough” if you don’t have a classically Wiccan or otherwise old-timey craft. We are all evolving together. Let your inner power shine!

No one can define exactly what witchcraft is, because for each us, it is different. You cannot dictate whether or not someone’s practice is “real witchcraft”, just as no one can tell you whether or not your craft is “real”. When I began on my pagan path, my teacher told me, on my very first day in her class, “No two pagans will give you the same answer to a question.” Our practices are as individual as we are.

Here are some tips, tricks, and a list of resources/ideas on how to learn more about the craft.

📚Lets get physical 📚

One of the easiest ways of learning more about the craft is reading. There are TONS of books out there that’ll teach you anything and everything about witchcraft. From history to guides, there’s a book for it.

“But faceless witch blog!” You cry, “where can I get books from?”.

Fear not, fellow witch, for I the humble library helper is here.

Here are a few places you can find books about (or related to) the craft.

•libraries: holy grail materials. Usually, you’ll find a poster or what not that explains the dewy decimal system, or they have a physical or digital catalog you can search. Some examples of sections you might find things in are the Metaphysical section, religion section, and reference.

~Library Tip: if you wanna learn about the history, take it from my librarian. Books written in the 70s will have more information than books written in the 80s (they were more excepting of witchcraft in the 70s).

•book stores: you can go to any book store and find books about witchcraft. (Barnes and noble, half priced books, etc). You could just sit there and read the book without even buying it (no stealing, karma is a bitch y’all). Second hand shops are also great for finding cheap books about the craft.

~Tip: if you have a Barnes and Noble membership, USE IT TO DEATH. But if you don’t, consider investing in one. Half Priced Books will buy books off of you, and pay you CASH. Although, you do need to be 18 or have a photo ID to have your books purchased.

•online: ok so this ones not at all tricky, except at the moment it kinda is. Since Amazon is being boycotted by some, this might not be an option. But they do have a decent selection to choose from. Other places like EBay, Etsy, etc will also have books for sale.

~tip: COMPARE PRICES AND READ REVIEWS!!!!!!!! You might be able to find a book cheaper on another website. Reading reviews will also give you a better idea of the product.

Fear not, small one (or tall one, I have no clue what you look like), I am here to help some more.

•incognito mode: ok, while this has been reserved to searching up weird questions about weird stuff and no no things, it can be useful to those who might have an accessible search history. Turn it on, and search for what ever you need. BUT always remember to turn it off after. If someone searches something after, they might be suspicious as to why incognito is on.

•podcasts: GUYS you have no clue how much you can learn from listening. It’s easy and discreet (and usually free). There are TONS of options to listen to!

•YouTube: again, lots of options. A few recommendations would be Harmony Nice, Aniias, etc. Harmony Nice has a series where she explains holidays, paths and practices. Aniias has some similar videos too (and they collabed that one time).

•right here: fam. If you’re reading this, that means you have a cornucopia of info in front of your face. Tumblr *cough* Hell *cough* has plenty of witches running a muck on here (me included). There are so many people here with info to be shared. BUT REMEMBER not everyone is sunshine’s and rainbows. Don’t let others tell you how to do your craft. Your path is personal, and while guidance is appreciated, don’t let someone control your path. And also remember, we don’t all have the answers. Don’t get upset if someone is unable to or refuses to answer your question. Be polite PLEASE.

•apps: there are tons of apps to choose from. These can be hidden on your phone fairly easy. But if your phone is checked frequently, this is probably not the safest bet.

They all have authors, and all authors have inherent styles and opinions- and when every topic is a hot-button issue in the witchcraft/pagan/occult community, there’s literally no safe middle ground. It’s all bad- all we can do is try to diversify, pick out the books/authors that are less bad, and then bitch about them later on the internet.

The “Pure Light” Ritual, by S.M (la-petitefille ♡)

Level: Easy!

Purpose: To gradually build back up a heart of love; for those who feel drained and wish to gently nurse themselves back to a clean, fresh state of mind.

Supplies:

- White salt (to encourage purification and cleansing) + a dish to put it in

- 1 white candle (to encourage awakening your light + purity, and can be of any size — just use what’s available to you!) + a safe candle holder

- 2 rose quartz stones (to encourage love) and 1-3 Citrine or Tiger’s Eye stone(s) (to encourage strength and courage)

- A small slip of paper + a pen

The Ritual:

1). Firstly, make sure to find a safe and clear space where you can practice in peace. Be sure to turn off anything which may be of distraction to you - your phone, the television, etc. (Your main goal is to cleanse your mind of any built-up influences, and to do so through the beauty of peace and solitude and the cleansing state which those things inspire.♡ However, if there happen to be some soft nature sounds outside, feel free to open the window if you’d like)!

2). After gathering and setting up your supplies in a manner similar to the pictures above, being sure to emphasize symmetry and balance, sit comfortably before your little shrine. Take a few deep breaths… In, out… In, out… And light your candle.

3). Whilst lighting the candle, visualize your pent-up hurtings as pouring gently through your hand and into the lighter/match, and; ultimately, into the growing flame itself. Picture any hurt or anxieties which plague you as softly being burnt away and out of your life, leaving behind only feelings of cleanliness and new possibilities.

4). Meditate upon the flame for a few moments, and then write the following words on your small slip of paper:

“A peaceful soul,

A peaceful mind,

A heart made whole,

A heart made kind.”

5). Closing your eyes, bring the paper to your heart. Press it gently against your chest, repeating the mantra. If you feel so inclined, repeat the prayer as many times as you’d like. Let yourself become filled with only light; the glow of love in its purest form. Accept the release of past influences which no longer have any power over you. You are unpolluted, you are clear, you are wholesome.

6). When you feel ready, bow down to the small altar, thanking yourself and the universe. Let the candle burn out as it will. Allow the crystals to become charged with your loving intent, and keep them somewhere special once the spell is closed. Place them under your pillow, in your bag, anywhere you feel drawn to or where you spend a lot of time. Hold the belief that you can grow into yourself once more and you can become free of your inner demons, and do remember that the very best things often take time. Blessed be! )O( ♡

Bonus: Remember that you can absolutely substitute candle colours or crystals as you see fit! For example, if you wish to obtain more creativity or drive in your life, use an orange or yellow candle. If you’d like to feel more protected, try Obsidian stones. Feel free to curate this ritual to your own taste and personal necessities!
