VV Brown - Shark In The Water (Alternate Version)
VV (Vanessa) Brown is a British indie-pop singer songwriter, model and producer who rose to fame in between 2007 & 2009 after signing a deal with Island Records.
Brown’s debut album ‘Travelling Like The Light’ was then recorded between 2007 & 2008 and then eventually released in 2009. Brown released 4 tracks from the debut album as singles, ‘Crying Blood’ ‘Leave’ ‘Shark In The Water’ & ‘Game Over’ with her most popular single to date being ‘Shark In The Water’.
‘Shark In The Water’ was the third single to be released from the album and acted as a metaphor for anxiety, especially around a failed affair Brown had with a past boyfriend, who used to stalk her in his free time. The single was the only single of Brown’s to receive airplay in the United States & was the only single to feature on the US Billboard Hot 100 peaking at 67. The song was also incredibly popular in the UK, however it only managed to peak at 34 in the singles chart.
The single then went on to be certified gold in the US.
On August 26, 2013, 4 years after the original release of ‘Shark In The Water’ an alternate version surfaced online which also happens to be at the same time as the release of her second single ‘The Apple’ from Brown’s second studio album.
It’s crazy to even think that these two singles are actually the same song after listening to this alternate version. However, I do not believe that this version would even manage to get onto the chart, therefore Brown was right in releasing the original version which is much more upbeat and ‘pop’.
With the original version being a happy-go-lucky type song with powerful heart felt lyrics this alternate version has been completely stripped back featuring just a simple synthesiser backing and Brown’s slow, much darker & raw vocals with a slight echo production placed over them. Then with Brown repeating & elongating the lyric ‘maybe’ over and over towards the middle of the song with the backing instrumental increasing in volume - to then suddenly come to a halt this song will truly send shivers down your spine & you can understand the true emotion and pain portrayed in the lyrics.
Personally I prefer this version to the original as I prefer a much darker more emotional song, although as I stated before, I understand as to why she didn’t release this version.
I truly rate this version & should definitely take a listen to hear this true talent.
