“Damn. I think you’ve changed more than I have.”

“I know, but it still doesn’t mean we don’t miss you when you leave. Besides I envy you a bit too, sometimes I wish I could take off this island once in a while.” The familiar sound of Carter’s steps as he moved through her kitchen, setting the table, getting ready to eat with her, it just made her smile wider, but it was nothing compared to the smile on her face when Alice came up in the conversation. “She is all grown up, they both are. Walking, running, climbing, dancing. It’s amazing.”

“You know... if anything good’s come out of all... this, it’s them...” Seldom speaking about his unrest towards their immortality, Carter’s tone came sobered, serious. “It’s definitely them.” But, quick not to maintain the dour scene, he picked up his pace again, moving over to the fridge to retrieve the syrup as if no crack in his demeanor even occurred.

“I’m not saying it’s impossible, I’m saying it’s stupid. Why would you want to do that anyway?” Heather asked, wondering why on earth Carter had chosen herof all people to talk about his plan.

“Because it would be fun! An island wide flashmob, Heather. Island wide.”

Brooke shrugged. “Why wouldn’t you? Honesty is the best policy and all that,” she joked. She shrank back, immediately regretting her statement.

Carter scoffed, as if to to say: you know why, before finishing off the water from his glass. Rarely did the placid soul feel such jarring vex. And yet, in spite of his strongest feelings, a part of him still disliked the sight of Brooke’s recoil, yearned to absolve it, a part of him which held an eternal fondness for the girl, "----Jesus, Brooke. Why are you doing this?"

Brooke sighed, feeling awful about everything that had happened between them. He had pieced her back together and then she had left him- for what? Someone who now couldn’t remember a damned thing about her. “You know you can be honest with me,” she whispered.

The centre of Carter’s forehead scrunched together tight, pained by the sharp edges of his own tongue, and by words he tossed without care, “And why the hell would I want to do that?”

Avery shrugged her shoulders in a response, replying back with a gentle tone, “No reason. I guess I thought I would go for a walk..the place where I’m staying at isn’t exactly homey.” Or anywhere in general she thought bitterly. “Why are you out at this time of hour anyways?”

Carter nodded sympathetically in response, not intent on pushing her troubles. “Me? Oh, boy-- ah, getting out clears my head, I guess. Lot of mumbo-jumbo in there lately. I wouldn’t be imposing myself if I were to ask to join you on your walk, would I?”

Carter chuckled, finding it difficult to see anyone, let alone someone so familiar now as Heather Phillips was, as malevolent, “It’s really not a horrible idea. I’d just need a buncha willing people, and some decently large speakers, is all. It could happen!”

She had to know this would be awkward. She bit her bottom lip as he answered. “Oh,” she said, disappointed for a multitude of reasons. “Some other times…then,” she managed to stammer out.

“Yeah, sure.” Carter answered without conviction or intention, as the last thing he wanted to do was spend time with Brooke Sanders. What a cruel twist their relationship had taken. “Some other time.”

Avery lift up her hand, giving the man a wave. “I’m fantastic, bloody fantastic–ecstatic even.” She replied, a bit over the top but she couldn’t control the words. “How are you…” Avery trailed off, lifting her eyebrow at him.

Carter took the sharp tone with ease, skin thickened and calloused over the relentless years spent with his brothers, “I’m good, thanks. Nice night out.” Gently, he pushed his bangs back from where they draped across his forehead. “Any reason why you’re out here all alone? Not that that’s not alright. Just wondering.”

Brooke raised a dubious eyebrow. “Yeah, I’m not really sure I buy that. But hey, if you can prove the surfing thing to me, then by all means, please,” Brooke retorted playfully.

Carter waded a moment in stretching silence, uncertain of his response, “... The waves aren’t particularly pleasant today.”

“Well, I’m glad that you are here, Carter. I am happy, but I did miss you terribly.” Lindsay finished the pancake mix before adding a handful of chocolate chips, she smiled to herself at the familiar activity. “Alice is at her ballet class, but she’ll love seeing you. If you want to stick around for a while more.”

“I always come back,” He mumbled off-hand, warding off reason which may have diluted her happiness. “Ballet, really? Already?” Carter moved from his seat, grabbing the plates and cutlery as Lindsay did her part. “Holy cow, Linds... of course, I’d love to see her. But wow, she’s growing up so fast. I could swear she was barely walking yesterday. Her and Noah, man, both of them -- way too fast.”

“Thanks mate,” Matt said appreciatively. “May I ask the name of my new best mate?”

“Well, I do like to be taken to dinner before any sort of real commitment, but it’s Carter. And you’re... Matt aren’t you?”
