so much of the harassment mizuki faces comes from guys who are adamant about finding her "cute" but assume she only presents that way for (their) attention. in other words, what they think mizuki's doing is what ena actually does.

they both get objectified, particularly by men. for mizuki, it's a consequence of her just existing in public. ena did have to actively seek it out, but it happened so easily and in such awful circumstances that i really can't call it a choice. mizuki rightfully blames the world for how she's treated, while ena places most of the blame on herself.

at first, i wondered if that kind of attention ever makes mizuki feel gross or ashamed the way it does to ena, but ultimately i think she's secure in the knowledge that she's doing it for herself, not for them. she knows the alternative is something she couldn't live with.

to mizuki, cuteness is identity. to ena, it's a commodity. that disconnect adds dimension to their early relationship. it's likely the reason mizuki used to disparage the selfie account so often. maybe a girl like that actually existing felt like it vindicated her bullies' worldview.

but there's a brighter side to this. i think it's thanks to mizuki that ena realized there's more to cuteness than just appealing to the male gaze. thanks to her, ena can look at a nice outfit and instead of thinking about how it complements her figure and what angle would capture that, she can think about how her best friend encouraged her to try it on and how they should go shopping together again soon.

i think it's pretty remarkable, in that case, that a trans girl helps a cis girl become more secure in her femininity and embrace it in a genuine way.
