My girl Leafpool, the Character of all time. She deserved so much better
Kettricken is not stupid. If Beloved is so stricken each time Dutiful is in view because of how much he looks like Fitz, I imagine she came to her own conclusions eventually. I imagine in some proportion she knows what happened, even if perhaps she denies it. I wonder how devastated she must have been. I wonder if she was excited for her child so that she may see Verity’s face again, only to see Fitz in the features of her son. I wonder if she felt violated in the same way Fitz did. The same way she felt the same heartbreak as Fitz for Nighteyes. Fitz and Kettrickens relationship is so very dear to me, they struggle in things so similar that truly only they could understand one another in them. I wish they had more moments to blossom their friendship together.
thinking about fitz’s relationship with hunger in the beginning of assassin’s apprentice and how food (or the lack thereof) is part of the reason for his abandonment at moonseye.
his grandfather says, “I’ve fed him at my table for six years…I’ll not feed him any longer…Let him be fed by him what got him.” almost certainly, his grandfather can’t feed him any longer. when fitz ate that night, he “wasted no time filling [his] mouth” and “stuffed as much bread into [his] mouth as [he] could.” he was starving! given how desperate his mother was to keep fitz and his grandfather’s emphasis on food, their family had to have been experiencing severe food insecurity to finally have the grandfather give fitz up.
food insecurity can be defined in two ways: 1) limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate or safe foods 2) limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways. while we don’t have confirmation for the nature of food insecurity fitz experienced before moonseye, we do know afterwards. the first day fitz arrives at buckkeep, cob and burrich obtain food for fitz but out of his sight and neither show him how to properly acquire food in the keep. during the time period after the first day and before burrich takes nosy away, burrich leaves before fitz wakes up and pays no mind to fitz as long as fitz is in bed every evening.
burrich’s negligence causes fitz to experience both of the definitions of food insecurity. he acquires food in socially unacceptable ways by learning to steal from the kitchens and town, as well as scavenging other food (burned crusts, raw sheel - this can be dangerous to eat, seaweed, fish) which is a nutritionally inadequate and unsafe diet. fitz mentions that burrich sees fitz “fed well enough to grow heartily,” but we can presume from fitz’s descriptions of daily life that he uses the word to mean burrich perceives fitz to be fed and the measure of “well enough” is clearly ambiguous. basically, anyone that’s eating burned crusts is not being fed well enough.
hunger is an inextricable part of fitz being forcibly removed from his mother. hunger drives fitz to steal sausages leading to burrich catching him red-handed (which burrich deals with by drinking and leaving fitz hungry for the rest of the day) and forcibly removing nosy from him. hunger drives fitz to eat from the great hall’s leftovers where shrewd catches him and makes him the crown’s tool, forcibly removing fitz’s autonomy from himself. essentially, hunger in fitz’s childhood is a catalyst for life-ruining events. and knowing that food insecurity in early childhood is a predictor of depression and may contribute to substance abuse disorders and unhealthy attachments to caregivers, well it’s something to chew on.

Rest in Peace John Flanagan
i usually don't post on Tumblr, but John Flanagan's books are the direct reason i have became a fan of reading. When i was 11/12, ranger apprentice was the first series i eagerly read after many failed attempts to get me interested in book! I recall how i devoured this series in span of like 3 months. The series had a huge influence on me as a preteen. i remember, that back then, i would make myself braver by thinking how fearless ra characters were in the books (i know its cheesy and silly but i was like 12) Alyss, in particular, captured my heart. i thought a great ton of those characters back then and i still do.
Flanagan's work not only influenced me as a child but also me today. I returned to my beloved childhood series 2 or 3 years ago. It got me back to reading after a long break. I also started going to an archery club for a brief moment. I started hyperfixating on his characters again and once again they influenced me and my personal work, as in my original characters and stories.
His work will always have a place in my heart. This series and those book shaped me greatly.
