Lesbians calling themselves "fathers", "husbands", "boyfriends", "handsome", and other words associated with men are a part of their gender presentation as masculine women as well as their reclamation of the idea that "lesbians just want to be men". He/Him pronouns is just a part of that!

He/him lesbians have always been here. Like... one of the first butches I met IRL, back in the 90s, was a he/him lesbian.

It should have told me smth that I really wanted to be him, but I remained clueless for an additional 2 decades.

And also: some women are also men, dammit. And not all lesbians are women, for various reasons. It can be more about presentation than gender identity, but it doesn’t have to be.

There is always and always has been a bit of a blurry line between some gays and some trans and nonbinary people, and that’s OK.

It doesn’t wreck the lesbian community if some lesbians aren’t strictly binary women, it doesn’t turn lesbian into a meaningless term. It gives the community more cohesion, not less, if people don’t have to leave just because they come to a somewhat different understanding of how their gender works or what pronouns feel right. And I don’t mean “community” as in feel good term that really means demographic group, I mean sometimes people’s entire social network/found family/emergency fund/etc is tied to their identity as a lesbian.

I searched the internet and found several insightful essays on he/him lesbians, and about how "othering" being a lesbian can feel towards woman hood. And I went, huh, that's neat. And it is! Gender and presentation and identity and pronouns are all beautifully complex. Queer culture is beautiful in all its forms.
