Abolish ICE. Over 40. She/her is fine, he/him makes me smile. Tired All The Time Disease. Profile pic is a photo of some windowsill herbs, background pic is the Leather Pride flag. URL is because I like math. It is always OK to repost my text posts and image descriptions -- getting ideas out and making this site more accessible are more important than crediting me (and if you don't want to interact with my blog for any reason that's fine.) This isn't a porn blog, but I sometimes reblog images you might not want on your screen at work or around kids.

Like it triggers me badly how common a take "carceral violence is bad and should be limited, except in the case of really mentally ill people who need it and benefit from it" is even among supposedly progressive people
It's pride month so I'll allow myself to express one opinion on the internet :
There are no "exact color" of pride flags.
I see more and more sites and posts talking about the exact hex codes for the lesbian flag, or the right purple for the ace one, and how it should be more or less saturated and I just want to say: pride flags were meant to be sewn in your kitchen. To be spraypainted and to be recognised.
There are no "exact colors" of pride flags because you should do them with what you have ! Nobody should care if you use a crimson red instead of a cherry red or whatever ! Be free ! wave your colors ! The colors you have !
there's this weird thing people fall into online a lot, where people assume that if the [perceived-to-be-inferior] version of [activity] is discouraged then people will, naturally, do [perceived-to-be-superior] version of [activity] instead. When really it's just as (or more) likely that if [perceived-to-be-inferior] version of [activity] is discouraged people just won't do it at all.
audiobook listeners are not necessarily people who would otherwise do a lot of traditional reading if audiobooks did not exist, many are people who simply would experience zero books. Booktok romance readers would not necessarily be reading the classics if booktok did not exist, many of them would simply not read. Fanfiction writers would not necessarily be novelists if fanfic wasn't an option, many would just be people who didn't write. You know?
I wonder if Head Prieat Ifian is assuming that Breq is Doing A Politics by insisting on previous Undergarden assignments being maintained, holding a thing people want out of their reach specifically to extract some form of concessions. If so, she probably thinks Breq is being really hardball about things.
She hasn't even said what she wants!
It can't be out of concern for the Ychana residents of the Undergarden. They don't have any actual power. They're not players.
On a story-crafting note, reminding us of Hetnys's and Raugh's attempts to kill Breq by means of an annoying interaction with a head priest, is a pretty solid way to deliver exposition/ "last time on the imperial radch trilogy" info without it coming across as an interruption in the story.
So, this is not important. When reading fiction, sometimes it is important to suspend one's disbelief.
Having said that, I don't see how it makes any sense whatsoever that the Radchaai care about "breeding".
They're an advanced, space-faring civilization with advanced medical knowledge. They are capable of cloning, and it's legal and apparently unstigmatized. They are absolutely capable of going full Gattica on their population if they want, that is to say, they're able to do actual eugenics based on actual genes.
As "breeding" (you have two fast horses have a foal so you can get more fast horses, you have two good hunting dogs have a litter so you can get more good hunting dogs, you keep your aristocratic sons and daughters marrying other aristocrats so that the self-evident superiority of the aristocracy can be maintained without polluting it with self-evidently inferior common blood) is basically just inefficient eugenics, there's really no need for it once technology and society progress to the point of being able to do real eugenics.
The Radchaai shouldn't give a flying fuck who anyone's parents are. They should care what somebody's DNA is.
I appreciate Breq noting that there wasn't really a way for her to knock before visiting Sphene in security. I like the implication that she would have, had it been an option. That she thinks it should have been an option.
Breq dancing around the presumed fact that the Gardens started leaking because she shot a hole in the fucking floor.
Or at least, at the end of Sword we were told she fired before getting shoved off the cliff, and did not get told what happened to the shot. It presumably didn't go through the hull, so...floor.
Guess if I had to pick, then 5. I once heard it be called the "honorary even number" and haven't been able to stop thinking of it like that. Also I agree.
