In 1981, Ronny Cohen discussed in vol.19 issue 5 of Artforum, the exhibition held at gallery Franklin Furnace and curated by Clive Phillpot. Titled “The Page as Alternative Space, 1909, 1929” the exhibition engages with the avant-garde magazines. Cohen especially talks about Lacerba, a journal based in Florence and associated with the Futurist movement. Its title meaning a bitter pill, one can guess what its aims may have had.

Frankly, its typography is not as “free” as the required freedom of words suggested by Futurism. But its masthead was quite inventive when it came to choosing a typeface.

Those were the days of the avant-garde!

Le séminaire automnal du Bal à l'EHESS a pour objectif d’explorer les enjeux de l’image contemporaine et d’appréhender dans toute sa diversité la notion de « document » visuel. Chaque sujet donne lieu à des contributions théoriques, présentations et analyses d’œuvres dispensées par des artistes, philosophes, historiens, anthropologues de renom à partir d’exemples choisis dans les champs de la photographie, de la vidéo et du cinéma. La seconde moitié du 20e siècle a consacré un âge pop dont les formes ont consolidé une culture globalisée des images. Le brouillage des hiérarchies a pu sembler définitif : l’avènement inexorable d’un caractère populaire simplement entendu à l’opposé des références élitistes de tout bord. Plus proche de nous, le mouvement des Gilets jaunes a remis sur le devant de la scène une autre culture populaire : une culture du peuple, portée par une lutte pour la représentation au sein de la société française. Que nous enseigne un tel événement pour la compréhension des images ? Avant tout, il doit permettre d’envisager le visible comme un terrain rugueux, jamais pacifié ; comme un champ d’invention où les images, disputées entre plusieurs parties, fragmentées par les usages, donnent le populaire à (re)voir. De cette approche conflictuelle de la culture, on souhaite s’inspirer ici pour faire de la question « Qu’est-ce qu’une image populaire ? » non pas l’horizon d’un inventaire de formes figées, mais le point de départ d’une réflexion neuve sur l’art et la culture visuelle.

Riffs, revisions, knockoffs, and homages: artists pay tribute to Ed Ruscha's famous photo-conceptual small books. In the 1960s and 1970s, the artist Ed Ruscha created a series of small photo-conceptual artist's books, among them Twentysix Gas Stations, Various Small Fires, Every Building on the Sunset Strip, Thirtyfour Parking Lots, Real Estate Opportunities, and A Few Palm Trees. Featuring mundane subjects photographed prosaically, with idiosyncratically deadpan titles, these “small books” were sought after, collected, and loved by Ruscha’s fans and fellow artists.
