Before I say anything, I know it takes two to tango and what both Betty and Archie are doing speaks volumes on the negative sides of their characters, but I would like to point out that this scenario can actually be quite realistic when we look at the circumstances Archie has had to face this season.
His father suddenly and tragically died
His girlfriend’s father is essentially dying
His “friends” had him play along in their Jughead fake Murder
He found out he can’t graduate with his friends
All of these traumas have a significant impact on Archie; all in negative ways and honestly? I really think that if the writers actually took the time to develop a character, we would be witnessing Archie hit an emotional crisis. The loss of a parent, sibling or close friend or, even a job may cause a man or woman to question how they are living their life.
One loss for Archie was a parent, the second “loss” was his best friend and although that loss wasn’t real, this trauma has also affected Jughead in a way that has changed him and y’know what? In turn, that means Archie has technically lost his friend, because Jughead isn’t the same as before.
Basically, I think Archie is going through a very badly written emotional crisis, does that make him innocent in his actions? No, but it does explain why he’s changing so drastically both emotionally and socially? Yeah.
