🗣 PUBLIC HEALTH 🗣 . . As some of you may know, our last course based semester is public and home health! 🩺 (Wait... last course content semester already??? Omg!!!!) a very large portion of this semester involves partnering with a school in your community and hosting classes for students to learn about various health topics such as sexual education, infection control, and mental wellness. 🧠 . . There have been some modifications due to COVID, but luckily we were both fortunate enough to be able to provide in-person sessions at both our schools!! Sydney got paired with an elementary school where she taught the benefits of physical activity, and Delanie was paired with a high school where she talked about healthy relationships and consent. 👩🏼‍🏫📚 . . These teaching sessions were quite out of our comfort zones and very different from anything we’ve done before!! We were basically leading a school assembly (with our partners of course)! 🎤 . . 🤍 Don’t use alone 🤍 . . For our public health clinical rotation this semester, We have been doing a lot of education about harm reduction and health promotion! One of the biggest ones being naloxone training and the importance of opioid overdose awareness. We were able to provide training to students and give out stocked naloxone kits to those in need! . . Here are some fast facts about naloxone & opioid overdose: 1. Naloxone can wear off in 20-30 minutes, so you may need to give multiple doses! 2. Signs of an opioid overdose are: decreased/cessation of respiration’s, pinpoint pupils, cyanosis, and cold/clammy skin 3. Always call 911! 4. Give rescue breaths BEFORE starting naloxone! 5. Go for the vastus lateralis when injecting! It’s the quickest and easiest placement. . . The opioid crisis is still a worldwide health concern! Remember, “drug users” are people just like you and I. This made us realize how many benefits this solutions have to offer! We had previously not had much experience with it before, so learn with us! 🤍 . Pros ✅ - Treats metabolic acidosis or tricyclic antidepressant overdose! - Can be given IV direct in cardiac arrest situations - Safe for clients and patients with kidney disease Cons ❌ - it can cause sodium retention or hypokalemia in high doses - Can cause chemical cellulitis in undiluted doses . We are tired... . . We just finished the busiest few weeks for assignments of this semester.. we had our midterm, 2 papers, 3 discussions, and preceptorship choices we had to make that impact the end of our nursing program. But, we know that we do not have it bad in comparison to everything else that other people are going through. We are thankful to be stressed and exhausted, because at the end of the day, we get to (hopefully) graduate with our BSN in a year and begin to work! . . Our province has been on strict restrictions stating no one outside of your household is allowed to visit you indoors or gather. This is so hard for everyone, including us but it’s so important to be diligent in following restrictions to slow down the progression of this pandemic. We are tired, we miss our friends and family, we want this all to be over. . . On another note, we have been given additional opportunities to ESN since the healthcare workplace is in dire need of help. Sydney is awaiting an interview for an emergency position, and Delanie is waiting for her additional hour request response. We want nothing more than to get out there and help. So yes, we are tired, sad, and over this... but unfortunately, we can’t stop this pandemic on our own, everyone needs to do their part. We are in this alongside every one of you! 💉 SUBCUTANEOUS PORTS 💉 . . Otherwise known as subcutaneous butterflies (we much rather that name it’s so cute) 🦋 are subcutaneous catheters that once inserted under the skin, can be used to infuse medications or even rehydrate patients! . . Some quick facts about SubQ injection ports: 1. They are good for up to 7 days! 2. Most often used in palliative care situations for symptom management, each medication being administered subcutaneously should have its own port! 3. Always make sure to include the medication ratio on the dressing/tape on the site 4. If a SubQ port is being used for rehydration, some swelling around the site is expected! The body will absorb this slowly! 5. Prime the tubing of the SubQ port with an extra 0.4cc’s of the medication the first time of use! This is applicable to our hospital policy for use of the Safe-T-Intima pictured here. Remember to refer to your own hospital policy if you use different products! ☺️ . . 💢 REAL TALK 💢 . . Online school has been quite the adjustment! We have found it really challenging to stay motivated while having self-directed learning at home! Making the transition from fully in person to fully online has been more difficult than expected in more ways than one! . . We want to talk about some of the challenges that we have come across, and anything that we have been doing to try to overcome them! . . 1. Staying motivated!! How easy is it to stay in your bed, in your PJ’s to do online class, and then call it a day? 2. Staying organized!! This directly links to number one, and it’s been tough to keep on top of projects, papers, and exams! 3. Feeling stir crazy!! Being stuck at home all day every day, can have an impact on you!! . . So what do we do to try and overcome these challenges?? . 1. We try to go to each other’s houses for classes and homework sessions, to help keep each other motivated and get out of our comfort zone!! Since we are in each other’s bubble anyways!! 2. As we always say... PLANNERS!!!!! They will be your best friend!!! It makes it so much easier to keep on top of things and visualize what is coming up and what is due! 3. Reach out for help! This can be to your other classmates or instructors if you need clarification for something or a little extra motivation! 🗣 TRACH CARE 🗣 This week we learned tracheostomy care! We were super excited to learn this skill and can’t wait to put what we learned into practice! Here are some highlights of what we learned: - you are supposed to deep suction for a maximum of 10-15 seconds per time ⏱ - there should always be a Trach Emergency Kit at the bedside in the event of accidental extubation 🆘 - you can expect an increase in your patient’s HR post suction ✅ - your patient should always be receiving humidified oxygen through their trach as the upper airway is what provides humidification 💨 - only the lower airway is considered sterile which is why you use a sterile glove when performing open-suctioning ⚡️ - always wear a face shield and gown when suctioning or providing any trach care 🔆 Do you enjoy caring for patients with tracheotomies?
