Just before nightfall I decided to take a walk outside. The sky was low, enveloping any object in its reach. It formed a dull, purplish haze - like nothing I’d seen before. The streets were empty. Not a single soul was out. It was oddly peaceful - imagining I was the only one left.

The warm rays of the sinking sun dance comfortably upon his skin, his head resting against a tree trunk and the brim of his hat shielding closed eyes futher from the sights around him. But what is there to see anyway? It is just them, their horses and the vast green landscape around them ( he had wanted to show Victor this little respite he found while out on another ride and then, he thought with a grin, one day, he should show him the rural Texan countryside; a pleasant thought he had debated no further ). And after they stopped for a picnic, Johnny just could not help himself but shut his eyes and doze off into sun-kissed slumber.

But then Victor's voice tries to reach him and if he were to pay any mind to it, he might have deciphered the words within it. But he has no desire to rise and, thus, to stop the other from stirring him, his hand darts forwards, dragging him on top of him and pressing his lips upon his. And yet it is his own action that finally, properly wakes him but all Johnny does is peer at him, the corner of his mouth curled upward in a chuckle. His fingers are still wrapped around his wrist. ㅤㅤIt was not until Johnny had opened the doors of the balcony that Zachary began to stir, his tired body searching for his husband's, his eyes gradually opening to see he was no longer there. Realising what the sound that woke him was, he soon follows the smell of the cigarette smoke, pale skin gleaming in the moonlight.

ㅤㅤMuscular arms wrap around Johnny's waist, pulling him closer, placing a small kiss on the side of head before requesting his presence back in the warmth of the sheets. Hand is placed atop his own, the sound of their rings clinking together still sending a rush of yearning through him. ❝ Well, I could think of a thing or two that might help. ❞ Another kiss was placed on the side of his head, before his tone shifted to one of slight worry.

ㅤㅤArms release Johnny, moving to lean against the balcony railing, the cold metal pressing against his bare back, ❝ Is something wrong? Do you want to talk about it? ❞

The suggestion tears a laugh from him, split eyebrow raised in both amusement and consideration and yet he finds himself pressing closer into him, fingers brushing over the arm wrapped around him. But then concern appears to overtake the playfulness Zachary had mustered just moments ago, taking Johnny's smile with it in the process and leaving a thoughtful haze in his stare. He takes another drag of his cigarette, the cloud of smoke leaving his lips with a sigh before he puts it out in the ash tray. A turn of his heel, a step and then he is leaning his head on the blond's shoulder, sligthly frustrated by his own tired state.

" Sometimes I jus' really suck at sleepin', I suppose. ", eyes closed, melting into the familiar comfort, his warmth, his scent. " ---I don't really dream a lot, y'know. Guess tha' 's just wha' happens when ya sell yer soul to hell or som'in'. But sometimes I... I don't know.. remember. Remember this woman whose soul I tried to rip out but couldn't. She kept tellin' me 'It's okay'; like who fuckin' does tha' when yer teeth-deep in her flesh? But every time I dream o' her, I wake up shakin'. Like I need to cry but can't. " His frown deepens. " And then I can't fall asleep again. "

Her teeth dig sharply into her bottom lip as she stumbles through the alley way, the pain she induces an attempt to distract her from the other growing ache spreading through her thigh ( the stench of silver hangs heavy in the air, makes her eyes water; she would breathe through her mouth but she knows it would make her curse, whimper, spit and thus she keeps her mouth shut and continues on. She just has to make it home. Home. Come on, move. ). But, alas, feeding on a soul and being stabbed in turn take more of a toll than she had hoped for and so she sinks to the ground, the cool wall of a building digging into her back.

A smell ( death, dust and cigarettes ). Familiar and therefore vaguely comforting and Joanna grins, the dried blood and the tainted black waters of the damned soul cracking at the edge of her mouth.
