Sorry i just saw this now. I had bought it actually, there's no place in Cairo that hires them except for one in Zamalek next to sapphire hotel
Memluks ruled Egypt for about 5 centuries before they were eradicated by Mohamed Ali in 1811. They were a culture of mercenaries (a greek friend of mine calls them the middle eastern spartans). They were brought as children from central and western Asia and taught to be fighters. As they progressed through the ranks they started fighting for power and rule. Each one made sure he erased the legacy of his predecessor. But the only thing they could never destroy is a mosque built to worship God. This is why they all were keen on building a mosque to immortalize their legacy. And this is why Cairo has so many of them next to each other. These two can be seen in alkhaleefa area. Half way betweem the citadel and ibn toloun mosque.
Ancient tombs that are still in use on your left, a mix of shrines for Memluk rulers surrounded by small stones for commoners. Overlooking them is Dar el Efta. Following AlAlzhar, it is the highest religious legislatory establishment here; aiming to create some concensus on religious dos and donts among Egyptians.
Refai Mosque is not too old (by Cairo standards). Opened up early in the 1900s. Built in a time where Egypt was under high influence of Europe, it is rumored that the original architect died amidst construction and was replaced by a European architect who had limited background on Islam. Since he knew he was building a place of worship, he ensured it had crosses around the windows. You can see them to the left in the picture. The interior is just amazing. It also holds the shrines abd tombs of the Egyptian royal family, as well as the Shah of Iran who came to Egypt after being expelled from his country following the Islamic revolution.

October bridge passes all through Cairo from east to west. Here is exactly half way: Cairo's centre. Ramsis square which used to hold the Pharaoh's statue, but now is home to the railway station and the two large buildings in the picture: the Egyptian Post and the Metro (underground)
Sayyeda Aisha bridge, square, mosque, and shrine.
One of the busiest and most chaotic places in Cairo in my opinion. Microbus stations, pedestrians, taxis and cars all going in random directions :)
Sayyeda Aisha (Lady Aisha) is one of the prophet Mohamed's wives. This mosque and shrine is built for her and many people flock from all over the Arab world to pay respects and blessings to her soul.
Her birthday (Mouled)is a big annual celebration as well and is a must see for a true authentic experience in Cairo.

So not so recently, they opened up a new road that connects the Suez Highway to the airport. The reason this is so great, is that I can access the airport from the suburbs without going into the insane traffic of the capital. Moreover, a clean bendy road that is not crowded... sounds like biker heaven!!! :D

Salah salem street en route to heliopolis. Obour buildings were the biggest I could remember growing up. Home to many companies, residents and shopping
Almaza is a small neighborhood in Heliopolis, the East of Cairo. Pretty close to the airport, it even has an airport on its own. Still once of the very few neighborhoods in Cairo to maintain its calm and quiet.
It also has the big bus station, where you can basically travel anywhere around Egypt or neighboring countries,
Talaat Harb street is one of the most amazing streets in Downtown Cairo. This area was the heart of the capital in the early 19th and 20th centuries. The colonial architecture makes it look like a part of Europe on a clear empty day. Too bad all of this has changed over the years as the population grew denser and denser. You can still see some of this beautiful architecture hidden among street sellers and clothes shops. one of my favorite walking and riding places on an early friday morning.
El Moezz Street in the evening. On a weekday, this street bustles with life. Offering variety of traditional shopping items; it is like every section of the street specializes in something.
Spices, Cloth and Clothes, diamonds, gold, bazaars with Egyptian souvenirs, antiques, home supplies, shisha and coffee shop supplies, and my favorite are the copper and brass workshops.
