"Defining Britishness"
When watching a mainstream film a British audience is more like to watch it and enjoy enough to buy the DVD if it doesn't offend British culture, Independent movies do well because of the niche audiences.
Services
the different means in which media is distributed, e.g the internet distributes films through programs such as Netflix.
Product
Something that has been created, whether it be in the form of film/TV or radio shows and magazines, to be consumed by an audience.
Institutional Practices
How media is used by industries to interact with society, adverts woulds be used as a way to persuade the audience to buy the product as an example.
Changing Technologies
With the advance in technology that means its much easier to access Movies/TV from anywhere, whether it be on demand shows, or catch up players on computers and phones.
Regulation and classification
The way that every single film that is shown in the UK is all classified by the BBFC, British Board of Film Classification. They have strict guidelines on the differences between all the ratings (U, PG, 12a, 15 and 18) and once they have watched and rated the movie full details are available on their website.
Piracy
There are actually two sides to the piracy argument, the bad and the good. Obviously it is bad because its illegal, the institutions loose out and most of the time its bad quality or in foreign subtitles. But it does have its perks, it gets views for the major institutions, for then if people enjoyed the movie enough they will go out and buy the DVD.
Audience
The audience is always changing, but they will always be the target audiences who the movies/tv shows are specifically aimed at. They are the ones who will pay money to see the movies, and they are the ones who will be watching them.
Convergence
When two or more technologies come together to create a new technology, for example when TV is watched on a phone through means such as Netflix or Iplayers and also when Lego creates ranges of toys etc like "Lego Stars Wars"
Synergy
The promotion and sale of a product throughout the various subsidiaries of a conglomerate e.g. Films, soundtracks or video games. Walt Disney used this marketing technique in the 1930s by granting the rights to use the Mickey Mouse character in products and ads.
Marketing
Thinking on who the audience is, then tailoring the movie/tv show for this target audience so they will go and see the film
Cross Media Promotion
Advertising, for example a web site, using multiple platforms which include radio, TV, magazines (and other forms of offline advertising).
Exhibition/Exchange
How a film is consumed (eg. social media)
Distribution
How a film is sold
Production
What is made (casting, rehearsal, filming, editing etc)
Cross Media Ownership
When a media branch owns other forms of media in order to influence more people in a variety of ways as it is in position to reach a larger audience. For example TimeWarner also have news channels, newspapers, as well as Warner Brothers.
