Hi!

I’m a university student in Calgary and this is literally just a self indulgent mental break from uni work.

I take pictures of what I think is fun or cool around Calgary and post whenever I remember. Mostly sunsets/sunrises, art, and birds will be featured but I’m also gonna try and get some landscape and transit photos too.

DMs and asks will be closed for the time being, this is purely a blog for me to just photo dump for now.

Hope anyone who finds this blog has as much fun looking through it as I do curating it.

I love the rodeo (bc of the danger and violence and hot cowboys ofc), but I have to emphasize just how comically, performatively patriotic it is at all times.

like. jesus. tonight after the announcer got done introducing the bullriders, he leaned into the mic and said, "And now we bring on the most precious cowgirl of all: Old Glory" and someone on a horse rode out carrying a giant american flag, and just...fuck. what the fuck.

and I was sitting there silently losing it, but then the horse reared up and the rider dropped the flag?? and the horse kinda stomped on it, and cowboys were running around trying to pick it up, but the flag was visibly dirt-stained by the time they got it off the ground.

and the cowboys were looking upset but the announcer said don't worry, it was fine, but that we should all ask for forgiveness, as if dropping a flag is an actual sin rather than just a weird american one, and holy shit. I wish I was funny enough to make up stuff like this. god bless america

This is going to sound stupid because Cowboys but I am constantly forgetting that America also has rodeos

What are Australian rodeos like? Do they have different events than American ones?

I have no idea because I don't know what American rodeos are like.

I haven't been to one since I was a kid, but from memory we've got buckjumping and bull riding, and I think they also do that thing where you steer an angry cow around the barrels from horseback, whatever that's called again, I forget. Some lasso events and possibly some bullwhip events I think. It's been a long time. And the "rodeo riding" for the kids where they put little kids on some calves and have them toddle around the arena trying not to fall off just like Mum and Dad.

Also the clowns. The clowns are the rodeo safety officers, next to the pickup riders, and it's their job to keep everyone alive, and they usually do a fun halftime slapstick show where they blow something up.

At least that's how they were when I was a kid, modern rodeos might be different.

BARREL RACING

And on reflection I'm not sure there is a cow involved. I think they just race a horse around the barrels. I don't know why my mind put a cow in there.

Dug through the notes because I was wondering if the antipodean version of barrel racing had cows in it, and then went on a bit of an information adventure--

My first thought was that your mind might have added in the cow from team penning, which is where there is a herd of cattle and you (being a team of people on horseback) have to get certain ones to leave the herd and go into a pen.

However! The Wikipedia article for team penning had a link to an article about something called campdrafting, which is apparently an Australia-specific event where instead of driving the cattle into a pen, you make them do a figure-8 around two posts, and then go through a "gate" which is simulated by another two posts.

So yeah you were probably thinking of that.

Great Albertan Life #it started like. a hundred years ago #locals try yo avoid it #but we inevitably End Up There (we are never sure how)#also for the other 355 days a year you can’t tell who is and isn’t a real cowboy #it’s an every day thing #calgary

Was super fun working on this big utility box project for the Summerset Bridlewood community in Calgary. When I was younger I used to go to use the train station here almost every day to go to school so years later getting to come back and create piece to go in this space is truly an honour! 💕

First three photos were taken on iPhone. Last four taken on a Canon EOS 50D (lent to me by a wonderfully talented friend for an afternoon. More photos to come from then 🙂).
