California wildflower bloom from above In recent weeks the media has been filled with colourful stories about the current amazing blooming of the arid areas of California, brought about by a well needed influx of rain, including some videos shared on this page (see http://bit.ly/2UWFGoF). Here we see them from space, with the lovely golden colour of the poppies shining resplendent even from this distance. The conditions necessary for these superblooms to floresce include not just a rainy autumn and winter but cold temperatures locking the moisture into the ground. This year’s event has been the biggest in years, attracting vast numbers, and some of the places where it has occurred have been swamped by visitors. These have included occasional hullaballoos that have trashed the meadows while seeking the perfect selfie (also a worsening problem in Holland’s commercial tulip fields, much to the farmer’s ire), though a majority of the visitors have proved respectful.
