My old person take today is that I feel like people have normalized being on your phone every single moment including when you're spending "quality" time with others so much that they're defensive if someone isn't ok with it. Yes, you have a problematic relationship with your phone and social media if you physically cannot put it down for a couple of hours to like, have dinner with your friends. It's a show of respect for other people's time and energy as well as important to be present and connect with people around you. Your parents who told you no phone at the table were right for that one.

cannot stress this enough good boy (2025) is not just a ghost story from the pov of a dog, it's a horror story About being a dog. it's about being small and helpless and in many ways useless. it's about having no idea what the hell is going on but also knowing there's danger before anyone else does and everyone just laughing and rolling their eyes. it's about separation anxiety and forboding smells and having no idea where your loved ones are when you can't see or hear them. it's about being completely unable to express ideas complex enough to warn anyone of anything, even when you know something is wrong. there is such effective horror to be found in a protagonist who cannot call for help because he simply does not know that such a thing is possible. it's good. it's good horror. it's good dog horror.

Xenofiction has such ripe potential for storytelling even in genres like horror, I love it. The way the film even uses cinematography tricks to put the viewers on the dog’s level (bunch of low shots, sparse showing of human faces) really put me in his headspace of being small.

Good Boy is a horror movie in the sense that a dog’s worst nightmare is being unable to protect their human. It’s a ‘man and his dog’ story in reverse, ‘a dog and his man’ where the usual convention of the dog dying to further human development is reversed. But because the protag is a dog, all he understands of the situation is helplessness, dread and loss.

Indy’s a good dog, but he is just that. A dog. He doesn’t understand that he can’t protect his owner the way he wants to. And unlike if a hapless human child were put in his exact same position, at least the child would possibly be able to call for help and be taken more seriously.

The most Indy can do is bark for human attention and be brushed off.

Indy is functionally powerless against the odds, isolated in a way no human could be, and yet he tries his best anyway to protect his owner even though the audience (probably) knows he won’t succeed past a certain point in the movie.

The title’s very accurate, he is a Good Boy.

It’s a little odd why in/m-universe in the PMD series, all Pokèmon just call each other by their species name (excluding Player intervention with nicknames).

As a kid I always had s headcanon that Pokèmon in the PMD verse do have personal names that the player never sees (except for if you name the Hero and Partner or whoever else you decide to nickname) because giving your personal name instead of species name is a very intimate thing (and only happens if you know multiple of the same species).

So that’s another much more subtle reason H and P are seen the way they are by the casts of the games—they just go by their personal names full time, for everyone!
