yeah. anyway,
Harry Treadaway and Rory Kinnear as Dr. Frankenstein and the Creature from Penny Dreadful. universes ahead of del toro's movie in terms of writing. give them a try if you haven't
monsters all, are we not?
penny dreadful as a show is endlessly facinating to me because its genuinely the best bad show of all time. like the plot and characters are so compelling and interesting and well written. the performances and acting is really good. as a piece of horror media it tackles the tropes of gothic and victorian horror, making some aspects more palatable for its audience while maintaining some of the more cheesy elements. it has probably THE best interpretation of frankensteins monster ive seen. the practical effects are insanely good and the dialogue, clothing, everything is insanely period accurate but then also has some of the most baffling writing and character choices ive ever seen. like all of s3 is just terrible.
its also deepy bigoted despite its attempts to seem not. like the entire point of the show was to have a nuanced female main character who fights to be able to live, but she just dies anyway in the end?? for no reason. they have an african side character who acts as the servant to one of the white main characters - who later dies for another white main characters angst. not to mention how it depicts jewish people. and the entirety of s3.
like its horrible, but that makes the good parts of it even more baffling to me - how can the same people who can make such thought-through characters and story just. not understand the implication of this other stuff they are writing.
its like if vampire diaries and the terror had a baby. and i mean that in the worst and best ways possible.
penny dreadful’s victor frankenstein is by far the most unhinged version of the character because when the creature comes to him asking for a mate he agrees with it, creates her and then HE FALLS IN LOVE WITH HER HIMSELF AND IS HESITANT TO LET THE CREATURE HAVE HER…… john logan said “i can make him worse” and he really did
PENNY DREADFUL 2.10 “And They Were Enemies”
Conservative beauty standards are back with a vengeance which means it's especially important to go out this summer with bellies out and bodies unshaved. Also be unapologetically disabled with mobility aids and wearable medical devices and stim toys and ear defenders and all that stuff. You need it. People need to see it. Everyone needs to be reminded that life is unquestioningly more enjoyable when you're not living inside an arbitrary set of rules created by people who are offended by all the wrong things.
Putting the term "Catholic guilt" on a high shelf where fandom can't reach it until everyone learns how to identify characters who are very very clearly coded as Protestant.
also I don't think parents "these days" are uniquely terrible, I just think neglect is showing up in new ways as technology progresses. today's ipad kid would've been wandering around in a ditch alone all day and night before. parents not wanting to have to deal with children is not a new phenomenon.
It’s so frustrating to me that we currently have ALL THE INGREDIENTS to hit a Penny Dreadful (2014) renaissance and yet nothing!
We literally had Nosferatu and Frankenstein, we literally had Dracula Daily and Interview With The Vampire, honestly, we still have Hannibal, all popular shows/movies that show that people are yearning for adaptations of horny gothic horror stories with messy morally bankrupt protagonist …
And yet!!! Nobody here to go insane with me about that one show from 2014 staring Eva Green as a bad bitch haunted by all the forces of evil, Josh Harnett as a bisexual werewolf cowboy, Harry Treadaway as the wettest most miserable most meow meow portrayal of Victor Frankenstein to this day, Timothy Dalton as the living incarnation of daddy issues, and Rory Kinnear serving catastrophic amount of cunt as The Creature.
Cannot even begin to tell you what watching this show at seventeen did to my brain chemistry.
And don’t ask me if it’s a good show with a satisfying conclusion that’s not the point okay.
Not even joking this is what happened

Less "if they really loved you, they wouldn't ever hurt you." More "hurt feelings and conflicts are an unavoidable part of life, but the people worthy of being in yours will apologize and work on their behavior once they realize they are hurting you. You can't expect perfection from anyone, but you can and should expect effort."
Do you want to deal with customers all day or do you want to dive deep into the ocean and perform dangerous repairs. Do you want to deal with school administrators and too many students or do you want to shake hands with the worst men youve ever met and be complicit in the destruction of the environment. Do you want to get naked in front of the internet for anyone to see or do you travel with an airline and be unable to settle down. And most importantly Do you wanna party
