Tentative || Callie and Emmett
A frown tugged on his features, and he was ready to tell her that skipping class wasn’t the best idea, even though her reason did seem pretty understandable. But then, it took Emmett a lot to willingly skip a class. He liked his structure, and it completely threw him off if things changed suddenly like that. He had to learn to accept though, that not everyone was so focused on routine though, and it wasn’t up to him to make those sort of choices for him. Even if just hearing about it made him inwardly shutter.
What she said next though, pushed all that from his mind, and caught him by complete surprise. A date? A. DATE. Emmett’s brain was having a hard time processing this sudden turn in conversation. I mean, it would be a lie if he said he hadn’t thought about it. He wasn’t completely unaware of his own butterflies when she was around, but he had obviously missed some major signals from her. She kept thinking he was going to ask her out but it never came? Oh no. No no no no. He had let her down. He had missed something.
Retracting himself from her, Emmett shook his head. Lost in his own thoughts in that moment. “I didn’t.. I’m sorry..” He could barely form the words to express how bad he felt, how much he had failed.
She’d expected a yes or a no, maybe for him to get uncomfortable if he wasn’t interested like she thought he was. But what Callie didn’t expect was the way his face fell...and he seemed to focus not on the invitation that she’d given him but on the previous words. “Hey...hey no...I didn’t...I didn’t mean it like a bad thing...I...I didn’t mean to make you feel bad,” she said softly, scooting closer and putting her hand on top of his. “I’m sorry...I....wow maybe my flirtation skills have been severely compromised....I...you seem surprised and...and here I was thinking I made it obvious that I...have like a crush on you.” Callie didn’t blush often, but now she did, her cheeks warming as she pulled her hand back and looked down at her lap, unsure of what to say. Was he that upset that she’d expected something from him...or was it that he wasn’t interested in a date and he just didn’t want to hurt her feelings. “Please don’t feel bad, Emmett...it’s not...you didn’t do anything wrong. It takes two people to miscommunicate...and...there’s no harm done. Now...now you know...that I like you...and...and if you want to go to the movies that would be really great...but if you don’t that’s...that’s okay too. It’s all okay.”
