STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS 2015 | dir. J.J. Abrams
He blinked at her snapping back that, yes, she's offering him a lift. Then finally after four days on the run, Poe breathed a short sigh of relief. "...Yeah. Yeah, I'll take it. Thank you." His voice cracked a little from exhaustion, but he meant every bit of it. Pulling his overcoat closer, he kept quiet with his head ducked down as they moved through the buzzing crowds towards the dock and this mysterious woman's ship. More than a few days worth of beard was on his mug, along with some questionable smudges of dirt, obfuscating his appearance. ...Somewhat. He knew he looked rough, felt rougher, but they couldn't take the chance that he could still be recognized by some 'helpful' citizen.
Poe stuck close to her, until she stopped in front of a bay and pulled something out of her pocket. He craned his head up at the docked ship, giving a low whistle. "A ninteen-thirty," his voice held a little awe at seeing the older Corellian transport. "Good condition, too. They don't make ships like this any more..." He offered her a lopsided smirk as the ramp came down with a hydraulic hiss. "And all the bells and whistles, too." Poe followed her up as she put in the access code, shaking his head and about to answer if he was injured when-- Whreee! Whreee! Whreee!
"Ugh..." From somewhere behind them an alarm sounded over the docking bay. So he had been spotted. Poe turned back and was about to suggest they hurry, but the woman was already ahead of him. The hatch slid closed well after she had made a run towards the front of the ship, leaving Poe to trail after her. "Hey, wait--!" He called, jogging down the ship's corridor. The alarm had shaken some of the exhaustion from his mind, leaving him already calculating the trajectories needed to get into orbit-- --Except, this wasn't his ship. He wasn't piloting. Poe was practically cargo here, something that didn't sit right in his gut. He followed her into the cockpit, eyes quickly roaming over the control scheme. "You need a co-pilot?" Poe offered, fingers already itching to get behind the panel. "I'm pretty good."
"I believe you." Though whether he believed that was up for guessing. Thera hadn't mentioned yet that she'd recognised him - belatedly, beneath the scruff and grime, like finding a hidden face in a puzzle - but she knew 'pretty good' was an understatement. Despite that, and besides her automatic territorial bristle, he didn't know the Nocturne and now was a lousy time to learn.
"How are you as a gunner?" A glance would tell him that all the ship's weaponry was currently routed through her console, but an easy switch over. "I've got top and belly turrets, just tell me which one you take."
And hopefully, that would simply be a polite way of keeping him busy, rather than an actual need. She couldn't tell offhand if the alarm was directly related to her passenger or not, but it was going to summon the First Order troops regardless. Her hands moved on the controls (somewhere there she'd slipped her flight gloves on, a habit so ingrained she hadn't even noticed), engines firing in response.
Lift off now, check sensors in a minute. The freighter lurched upward before the landing gear was even half-retracted, Thera instinctively sensing the feel of it slotting fully into place as they rose past the docking bay walls. The light was flashing on her comm, spaceport control trying to get in touch, but notifying a flight path was the last thing she intended to do. Second last, if demanding they land again was even remotely on the cards.
Instead she flicked over to the intercom, just long enough to warm Poe with a crisp, "Punching it," before engaging the sub-light and launching them into the sky.
Alright, sensors now ... and ah, kriff. "Looks like a light cruiser ... two light cruisers, but one's further off. I can outrun them, but if they launch fighters ..." Hesitation, "They just launched fighters. Dank farrik - !"
Shields raised, the engine noise picked up a notch and the sensation of speed increased. "Which turret are you in?"
A rebuttal was on his tongue, but he quickly swallowed it back. Not his ship, not his place, and they didn't have the time for him to convince her. "Got it." With a terse nod Poe was dashing back out of the cockpit. Already he was thinking back to what he knew of the standard floorplans of the 1930, hoping that this mysterious woman hadn't made too many modifications to it. Sure enough he found the gunner seats right where they were meant to be. He felt the ship shake beneath him as it lifted off the ground, him barely pausing to put his boots on the stepladder upwards. Poe climbed over the seat, sitting hard as he scrambled for the headset, placing it over one ear as he started flicking switches with the other hand. Targeting sensors were calibrating as he heard her voice both from behind him on the intercom and over the tiny speaker. "Topside," he confirmed, getting his hands on the controls as he spun the turret around. "I see them coming in. Are we firing to disable or kill?" One would cause a lot more trouble than the other, but if it meant getting out by the skin of their teeth, he'd shoot down as many TIEs as necessary. His fists tightened on the handles, fingers barely resting on the triggers, watching the little dots get closer...

🎵 Star Wars Kinect Soundtrack - Blasterproof ------------
Been there, done that, messed around I'm having fun, can't bring me down ...
It had been a hell of a fight. Not just the initial battle, the one that had landed Thera in the medical bay, but the one that followed, as she argued tooth and nail with the attendant droids to let her out of there and continue her recovery on her own ship, thank you (please was sewn in underneath, but that would never see the air of day).
It's not that she's scared of an infirmary - it's just that she hated the poking and prodding and the disinfectant smell (the fact that she's always walked out of them, but so many others haven't). Not clear memories at all, just dots in her hind brain stirred up by the clean white walls and the scent hitting her nose.
She got her own way eventually, of course, partly by proving she was strong enough to walk out by doing so, bag of belongings clutched to her chest. All of which must have done wonderful things for her reputation, and led to her spending the next day and a half behind a secured hatch, not wanting to deal with anyone at all.
But Poe Dameron, it seemed, refused to be just anyone. The music was loud enough to get her attention, to encourage a peek through a viewport just before the singing started. Oh, dear gods. The entire hangar was watching him strut about outside her ship, singing (not too badly, mind you!) into an earpiece mic from a flight helmet.
Thera wanted to laugh. She knew what he was doing, annoying her enough to bring her out of her funk. And it was working, damn him. Except for the quick, brief hiccup that was all too close to crying instead. But then she opened the viewport and yelled down.
"The kriff do you think you're doing??"
It had taken some doing to pull this off. A bribe of fresh koyo melon for the communications officer to commandeer the hanger speaker system, wrangling a bit of cooperation from the flight crew, and a little behind the scenes help help from a few friends, but now the plan was in motion.
Operation: Morale Boost was a go.
The scuttlebutt mill had been churning, and already an audience of curious onlookers was gathered for the performance, but Poe didn't mind. He'd certainly had done worse in a few cantinas in his time. A bit of singing wasn't a big deal.
With a signal to his main co-conspirator, BB-8, the music started up, filling the hangar with the bouncy tune. Poe pressed the PTT on the earpiece and started to croon along.
A few cheers and some laughter came from the crowd, only serving to encourage the commander in his performance. He belted out a few lines louder, raising his voice up to the viewport of the Nocturn Wing.
And sure enough, it got a reaction from the current sole occupant.
He muted the earpiece, grinning up at Thera leaning out the port to yell at him. "What does it look like?" Poe yelled back. "I'm serenading you!"
The song continued in the background, but his attention was on her now that she had finally shown her face.
"You don't like the song? I can try something else. Hold on!" Poe made a circling gesture over to BB-8 for the droid to cycle to the next song. Instead of a power ballad, the speakers began pumping out the sounds of percussions and chimes.
"Sing along if you know it!" He addressed the crowd right before joining in.
"Yub nub, eee chop yub nub!
Ah toe meet toe peechee keene,
G'noop dock, fling oh ah!"
“That’s just the way it is, flyboy.”
Poe rolled his eyes, closing them briefly as he thumped the back of his head on his makeshift barricade, a bit of starship wreckage at was in an advantageous spot. He knew the platoon of stormtroopers had him cornered, a half-moon formation on the other side of his hiding spot, all guns trained on where they thought he was. It was a kill box, and he was as good as a sitting mynock. Gripping the blaster held in his lap tighter, Poe looked left and right, desperate for something, anything, he could use to get out of this. "Easy for you to say, Chrome Dome!" he called back. If he could keep her talking, maybe that would buy some time until backup arrived. "Hey, how about this? You give me a five minute head start, then you and your boys in white can give chase? Whaddya say, Phasma? Wanna play the game?"
STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS | 2015 dir. J.J. Abrams
His eyes bugged out of his skull. She... Was she offering him a ride? That was almost too good to be true. Poe's head turned to track her as she pushed by, stride long and confident while resuming her path towards the docking bay. "Ah, kark it..." He had only a split second of hesitation before he shook the thought of this being a ruse out of his head, deciding to take the chance. It was better than sticking put and letting the Order have the easy win... Reholstering his blaster, he picked up the pace behind the stranger, falling in step beside her. "Wait! You serious?" he found himself asking. "You're asking me to come with you?" Following her the two of them ended up back on the main pathway, blending in with the crowds just in time for the Stormtroopers to round the corner, just barely missing them. "I mean, I'm grateful--" Poe continued, lowering his voice just enough to be heard over the din. "--Don't get me wrong, but color me surprised you'd offer a lift to a stranger out of the goodness of your heart." A rather large alien was in their path, cutting the one-sided conversation for a moment as Poe had to sidestep their bull-headed path. "...You are offering me a lift, right?" he repeated when they were rejoined, the gates to the docks now in sight. "Or is this a hallucination, and I'm actually lying in the street with a head wound as I'm getting arrested?" A distinct possibility, with the luck he's been having up until now.
Yes, she was offering him a lift! Or at least she was trying to, if she could work her way around the holes fatigue was chewing in his IQ. Luckily for him survival instinct had jumped up to take the reins, in a way that didn't involve pointing a blaster at her.
She was pleased about that part, as well - although ironically the weight of her own sidearm was getting heavier as they wove through the crowd. Dameron (and she was pretty certain by now that's who he was) had stirred up a hornet nest around the port, to the point where if they didn't catch him soon the troopers were going to start checking IDs and, more of a worry, restricting departures. So she was leaving, and if he didn't come to his senses about it she'd just have to leave him behind.
"Like I sa - " She broke off as a Trandoshan shoved between them, a head taller than them both and intent on its own business - but then her stray was back beside her, still asking questions, and she sighed. "Yes. OK? Take it or leave it."
A bit more harsh than he probably deserved, but a crowd filled with potentially flapping ears wasn't somewhere to explain herself again. That could wait until they were aboard ship, and away.
They reached the entrance to the docking bays, passed the first two before she turned a sharp left into the next one. A light freighter rested innocently on its landing gear, white and blue paintwork a little worn and the occasional meteor-dent in the forward panels. Thera pulled a control fob out of her pocket and pressed a button, followed by the familiar hiss as the access ramp broke seal and began to lower.
Small lights on either side changed from green to red as they approached, only to change back again as she climbed the ramp and entered a code for the hatch.
"Are you actually injured? As in, 'medical bay' injured? Cos otherwise we - " She stopped, eyes widening a little as somewhere very, very nearby an alarm began to sound. "Scratch that." Thera closed the hatch behind them and ran for the cockpit, "We're outta here ..."
He blinked at her snapping back that, yes, she's offering him a lift. Then finally after four days on the run, Poe breathed a short sigh of relief. "...Yeah. Yeah, I'll take it. Thank you." "Don't make me order you." ------------
Her very first instinct was to challenge - you can try - but pulled it back, letting a harsh escape of breath speak for her instead. Excuses battled for a place on her tongue, why it wouldn't work, why she could ignore it, why she would ignore it, why ... thrown aside as a waste of time, in favour of something more visceral and to the point.
"I'm not going anywhere, Commander." What would he do, court martial her? Neither of them was in a regular army anymore. "You're going to leave me to kriffing live with myself if you don't come back? We go in there together, or I leave you here and go in by myself."
For a moment his brows knit together, concern and fear warring for a place there. Admiration, too. Thera was threatening to pull the very same thing as he had planned on doing, likely for the same reason. Neither of them could live with themselves if the worst were to happen to the other. "Hey," Poe spoke softly, reaching to place a hand on her elbow, just in case she tried to run by him to reach the landing craft first. "You know what we're up against. I'm not gonna lecture you on the odds of this going smoothly... I respect you too much for that." His eyes met hers, "But you go in, then the mission's gotta come first. Something happens, you take the target and you get out. Understood? No dashing heroics this time, that's my job. Besides, you're forgetting something..." He gave her a crooked smirk, "I'll always come back to you."
The Team-Up we didn’t know we needed
Star Wars: Poe Dameron #27
[ @callsign-black-leader from here.]
She'd had a few minutes to look at him now, the man behind the little black eye of the blaster, and she was ... a shade surprised, but strongly suspecting she knew his name. He didn't look anywhere near as polished as the slick stock photos that graced the holonet news - or even as tidy as the basic three-sixty that rotated above a bounty puck, with a remarkably large number printed underneath.
Large enough, in fact, that he was very lucky to have encountered someone who held a set of ethics over who she hunted. And that the large number had been put there by the First Order, because Thera meant every word she'd just said. Any enemy of the Order ... might not necessarily be a friend, but they were definitely in line for her helping out.
Even if he was trying, like a toddler fibbing to mommy, to play the denial game. Boy, he really was tired wasn't he?
Her eyebrow was already up, her expression turned all the way to 'Really?', when the crackle and the yelling reached their ears. Seriously, all this time and they still couldn't stop their troops sounding like scratchy tin cans.
But at least it cracked through his paranoia at the same time it cut through his excuse. The blaster hadn't worried her very much, but she was still glad to see it ease away.
"Uh-huh ..." A wry nod, "Figured you could." She took her eyes off him now, throwing a look over her shoulder toward the noise. A pause, listening, then suddenly she was on the move, side stepping to go past him with a hurry in her stride. Her intention hadn't changed, but her patience (and possibly her time) had just run out.
"Yeah, ship." Tossed to him as she went by, without looking back, "That's where I'm heading right now, whether you come with me or not!"
❛ well, how do i look? ❜
Poe's head raised from where he was rummaging through the supply crates before they were loaded. The mission they were about to embark on was risky, and they couldn't take any chances of missing out on an important piece of equipment.
Eyebrows raising, he gave a low whistle. "Wow. You look like you're about to order your platoon to open fire on me."
Thera was wearing a stolen First Order officer's uniform, complete with dress cap. A bit of planned subterfuge to get past the orbital and planetside blockades.
Again, risky, but there wasn't many other people he trusted to partner with.
Poe stood, wiping his hands on his pants before stepping over to her to inspect the fit closer.
"You look the part," he laughed, giving Thera a lopsided grin. "But can you act the part? It's gotta be believable, the right combo of arrogance and scughole. Think you can manage it?"
PROMPTS FOR TELLING A BIG SECRET * assorted dialogue, adjust as necessary
when you have a moment, we should talk.
there's a lot you don't know.
i'm not who you think i am.
i lied about a lot of things, but i never lied to you about how i felt.
i had a feeling you would ask me about that someday.
i'm not actually [name].
you should probably sit down for this.
before i say anything, i need to make sure you're ready to hear this.
everything you've ever known is a lie.
i was given strict instructions not to tell you what happened.
do you want to know the truth about what happened to your parents?
when i tell you the truth, you'll hate me.
after all this time, i think you deserve to know the truth.
i've been keeping a lot from you.
if you don't tell me the truth, i'm leaving.
stop lying to my face.
they didn't tell you what really happened to your parents.
it's time for you to hear the truth.
everyone knows you're special.
i think i should tell you something.
i'm honestly not sure how to go about telling you.
they haven't always been honest with you.
remember that? that was a lie.
you'll figure it out sooner or later. might as well be the one to tell you.
that was never real.
i'm tired of the lies. i want the truth.
was that the truth, or just another lie?
was any of this real?
you're not actually one of them.
i don't think you can handle the truth.
give me an honest answer for once.
you wouldn't believe me if i told you.
you're different than the rest.
where have you been sneaking off to?
you want me to tell you everything? fine.
don't say i didn't warn you.
you told me you were going out. why did you lie?
what lies have you told me?
some things are best left unsaid.
ignorance is bliss, you know.
they never told you what really happened to [name].
you'd be better off not knowing the truth.
you've never been told the truth about what happened.
i think it's time you were told the truth about your parents.
there's something you need to know.
i can't keep a secret from you.
were you lying to me this whole time?
what have you been keeping from me?
you're not actually from there.
there's something else i need to tell you, something you're not gonna like.
promise me you won't hate me when i tell you.
i can't believe you've kept this from me.
i think i deserve the truth.
if you can't tell me everything, at least give me a hint.
so that's what you've been keeping from me this whole time?
who told you to lie to me?
when were you planning on telling me the truth?
i think i can trust you with this.
