The girl who was Saturday night is a novel by Heather O’Neill published in 2013. The story is all about the twins Nicholas and Nouschka Tremblay trying to become famous in Montreal. In the audio, I read passages talking about Sainte-Catherine Street. The researches have been made in a group composed of me, Juliette, Helene, Massimo and Camille. By reading the book and those passages I had the chance to learn more about this street and the city where I live now. Indeed, I’m from a different city than Montreal, I never knew anything about this city before. Throw this book, I had the ability to learn more about my city and how Sainte-Catherine used to look like and how it is today.

Ang 1100 - Working and Meditate -

There is someone always telling us to take a break when we’re working, right? Well… I never listen to this person. I usually do all my work in one huge amount of time without any break. I must admit that it is not the best way but… I like to do it my way (aka Frank Sinatra). But for the purpose of this blog post I made an exception. I worked for around 30 minutes and had suddenly a break. A 10-minute break left me all the time to make myself a cup of tea, go to the window and close my eyes to change my mind. At this moment I felt empty. My mind wasn’t drowning in all that work anymore, just some pictures or thought about some memories came to my mind. I was breathing, thinking and opening time to time my eyes just to look at the outside. However, when I got back to work, I had some difficulties to focus on my essays and my ideas again. I think that 10 minutes is maybe too long a break for me. Anyway, taking the time to experiment this type of “working modification” was interesting in the way how I disconnected such quickly from what I was doing and the feeling of emptiness this pause bring to me.

Ang 1100 - Proofreading -

Making proofread my essay is something that I don’t usually do. But for the need of this blog post, I gave one of my works to a friend to proofread it. Doing this gave me tips to revisit my essay and correct several errors. With his advice, I’ve been able to take some distance from my text and found some problems with my essay that even my friend hasn’t seen at this moment. I changed my style and my citations to make my work more understandable for a larger audience than me. It sounds obvious but when we think about it, writing is something we do for ourselves first. It is our way to express ourselves and it often doesn’t fit with other conceptions, comprehensions or opinions. Making it proofread is a good way to take this distance needed for an academic work and bring more clarity to the text.

Ang 1100 - Office Hours -

Going to a professor office hour is something new for me. Getting an appointment with a teacher is not something you do when you have questions in France but more when you’re in trouble. Taking one brings me to discuss with my teacher about by weaknesses but also my strengths in a peaceful context. Indeed, I could just go to the end of a class to discuss about it, but everyone is always in a hurry. Taking time is important to focus efficiently on my work. Indeed, it helped me a lot in my essays in this class. However, the appointment was just a base for a better work and having my teacher point of view and councils is helpful for my future studies.

Ang 1100 - The Profession

When someone asks me what I’m going to do after my degree in English, I answer that I am split between becoming flight attendant, working into military intelligence, English teacher or actor sometimes. Working in aeronautic have always been my dream and this job is my major professional objective. After my English degree, I will have to do a formation to safety and basic rules of flight attendants and pass a test. This test will prove my knowledge of every rule concerning this job and also what I know about languages and English as the main one. Some company’s incudes this training into their recruitment process and some don’t. Therefore, I must be ready to every possibility and use my English degree as a useful backup for my future. Military intelligence is a second door that I discovered in high school, during those years, my flight school brought us at a military are base and presented us some military career. After some discussing and a few days after, the chief warrant officer contacted me and presented me the work which was corresponding with my profile. And she wasn’t wrong at all. Coordinator in military intelligence is way more interesting than what I was expecting, and a degree in English was essential to overthrow this post instead of other potential candidates. My idea of becoming an English teacher comes from the fact that I’m convinced that education is important but also exciting. Learning to the next generations is not easy but interesting at the same time. It gives the occasion to share knowledge and with a doctorate to become a researcher. Expanding our knowledge and transmitting it is a wonderful work that I’ll be glad to accomplish. The work of actors follows a totally different path. I’ve always been interested in acting but I never took the occasion to do so. This degree could give me access to drama or any kind of work about acting and this art.

Ang 1100 - Working and Workout

This day has been a rainy day among others. So, I tried to make it different this time. After studding for a few hours, I had the idea to go for a run to think about something other than books and literature for a moment. My shoes and my music on, I was ready to take this time for myself. Running along the street with a bit of rain, I was lonely with my thought. Running always give me this feeling that I can finally be empty of any thinking. I can feel my breath and forget about what expecting me at home. This focus on myself clean my mind but also help me to things when I’m back home. With my thoughts cleared, I’ve been able to come back to my office and work more deeply on my essays, my book and even what I could do for dinner. Making a short cut between my work with sport give me the occasion to clear what can disturb me from what I usually do and help me to focus more on myself when I feel drowned into any other home business.

Why study english literature ? - Ang 1100

If we take in consideration every country that has English as an official language and countries that teach it, we can count at least 2 billion people who can speak it or a basic English referred as Globish: a trademarked name for a subset of the English language using a subset of standard English grammar. Nowadays, every company would ask you to be able to speak English if you look after a good job in any context. And with all those reasons we can add the wonderful history of the Anglo-Saxon world. Being able to speak to at least 2 billion peoples from different civilizations or culture, being able to apply to a lot of jobs and learning more about our world history are for me the main reasons to study English. English is not only a language but a key to new information’s, communication, opportunity and knowledge. Learning English is a way to understand the geopolitical situation and issue in our world quickly and being able to be aware of our environment without outside help. Exchanging point of view and expanding our analysis capacity is one of the many aspects of English studies. Understanding word means understanding every shade of our personal, professional or cultural world. Therefore, I choose English literatures studies.

Tulip Fever - Ang 1100

Most of the time, peoples who’re going to see a movie adaptation of a book likes to read the book first. I definitely don’t recommend this way to enjoy the story. Commonly, you will hear at the exit of the theatre persons talking about how the film was NOT just as the book. Obviously it’s not ! Just try to resume 350 pages at 1h30 ! Anyway… The fact is that this procedure tends to close the mind of the spectator by impoverishing the story. If we take the other side of the experience by watching the movie first and reading the book after, we change our opinion. We can, with the book, discover different aspects that weren’t explicit in the movie or we can learn more about a character that we liked, for example. That exactly what I’ve done with Tulip Fever! The book published in 1999 and wrote by Deborah Moggach has been adopted on the screen in 2017 by Justin Chadwick. After seeing the film in cinema, I looked at the book as an asset to understand a bit more the story and the characters. With the process I explained earlier, I’ve been able to take a new look on the story. Indeed, Justin Chadwick made a good job when he had to transpose the story on a different media. Some details can be seen as artistic choices just as when ( SPOILER ALERT ) Jan Van see Sophia in the coven. In the movie he is sure that it’s Sophia but in the original text he believes that it was her. This kind of difference are minor and doesn’t destroy Chadwick’s work. The director brings a lot of the original dialogues into the movie without changing too much or even a word. But we can see that some details are hidden from the theatre spectator and accessible to those who read the book. We can talk about the fact that, in the movie, Willem come back and just explain that he became a sailor for a time. We can learn with the book that he actually was in the military navy and wanted to use the money earned in this job to open a cheese shop. We can also talk about the fact that Cornelis don’t have a lot of screen time after he understand that the baby is not from him. We just learn a bit after that he moved to the Dutch Indies. With help from the book we can discover his reflection and his redemption for all his vanity. In Soma, we can say that the book has to be seen as a help to understand an adaptation like Tulip Fever and not as a base for what we have to expect from the film. If I had to put a mark on the movie adaptation, I’ll give a 3,6/5 because of the good transposition from the book to the screen medium. Ang 1100 - Library -

Okay! Let’s talk about my university library! Maybe less poetic than working outside but still something interesting. Working or going to a library wasn’t common for me at all before university. The fact is that I never had to work as deeply as at the university. Getting a A with what I know, heard or search on the internet was sufficient. But not now, going there had become something I had to do anyway. Well, I worked in a library in Cambridge but nothing comparable than here. We had an introduction before being left alone in the building about how to work here and where to find what we needed. Commonly, searching something in a library can be easy but this one is such huge that searching a file without using a computer could take at least a day. Everything about that have been explained during that presentation. Then we had to search for some place and some things to do to be accommodated to that place. Running into the corridors of the facility to find our purpose had something of fun. Being in a group always turn things into fun! That’s why I don’t really like to work in a group … but anyway! It helps us to do our job and get some experience of that! Some pictures about our research will be in this post! Take a look and see you soon for another post!

Ang 1100 - Studying in a park

It was at the beginning of the evening; the sun was going down and I wanted to catch what they call in photography the golden hour. Working studying or reading wasn’t my main purpose but I took some texts for a class and a book anyway. I was the first time for me in Montreal, being in a park walking and staring at the sun alone. Kind of a relaxing moment. The golden hour is a good name for this moment of the day. The “lac aux castores” was full of life. Birds flying around and fishes swimming away from their predators. Nature is beautiful in her own way. I walked a bit, took some pictures and founded a place up the hill. Grass was as green as I could imagine it during that period of summer. Couples were embracing, friends were playing and some alone peoples like me, alone, were here siting and reading. What a good place to stay! I turned my phone in sleepy mode and took out my book and texts. I almost drowned into it. Even with the park was calm in its own way. A drone came around few minutes after. Flying upon my head, disturbing me for a moment. I was a bit mad at the pilot who was disturbing my moment but who could resist to the possibility to see the park from such a good place than sky? The night came closer as I was continuing to read, but who care it the night take over? The cold wind brought me to reality. I realized that the sun was gone as well as some of the other readers in the park. Time came for me to go. I’ll come back to this place another time maybe but earlier this time.
