Slightly controversial tma opinion: I've seen a lot of people in the fandom space talk about which Fear they'd be an avatar for like it's something they relate to, or the one they don't fear. Like "oh I like spiders, so I'd be with the Web. I'm not afraid of heights, so it would be the Vast who'd get me." And to a certain extent I think that's true-- the more you put yourself in the Fears domain, the more likely you are to catch its attention. Of course a person who climbs tall ladders all the time is more likely to encounter the Vast. Manipulators will often fall under the notice of the Mother.

But I feel like we're often missing something: it also needs to be something you're afraid of! "Feed it or it feeds on you"-- whatever Fear you end up tied to feeds on your fear first, and you're left with the decision to die, or turn that fear onto someone else instead. It's the abuse victim who perpetuates abuse-- you perpetuate that fear onto someone else. Jon was always afraid of being Watched-- that's why he pushed the skeptic act so hard. He was equally afraid of not knowing what was going on around him. Annabelle Cane was participating in a study about arachnophobia before she became a spider herself.

It's the whole point of the series: you become the thing you Fear. Nearly every avatar chose to take the power offered, and take the place of their abuser, their fear. It drives people to terrible things. Of course in Jon's case, it was quite literal, but that's a later rant.
