kinda funny that people seem to be taking the part in mikoto's report describing him as a Normal Happy Well-behaved Child From A Normal Happy Family Who Never Dealt With Any Kind Of Setback Until His Job at completely face value... like we already know about his parents' divorce, so that obviously isn't 100% true in the first place.

but anyway its funny because this actually reflects so well the experience of many ppl with DID.

like... ask most people who knew me as a kid, and i absolutely would have been described as someone who was very well-behaved, happy, friendly, smart, ambitious, and easy-going. my family would have been described (by those who didn't actually know the whole truth) as a pretty normal, though maybe with a bit of an odd or chaotic undertone, middle class family whose parent (single parent home twinning w/ Mikoto ✌️) was well-meaning and kind.

and ask me before i become Aware of everything and I would have probably said almost the exact same things.

like that's kinda the point of DID lol. there are absolutely abused and traumatized kids, with or without DID, who show many obvious signs of there being something wrong, who wouldn't have been described at all like Mikoto was. but there are also many abused and traumatized kids who didn't show those obvious signs and would have been described as a normal and happy kid.

(and then if you ever open up about your trauma or DID, everyone who's known you for awhile immediately writes you off as lying, overreacting, or attention-seeking and completely dismisses you because there were no signs growing up!!! no way something like that could've happened!! they would've been able to tell!!)

now do we actually know if this was what Yamanaka was going for? do we know he for sure didn't just write a character with a very misinformed view on what DID is and how it develops? no, we don't. but i'm choosing to interpret it in this way because it makes sense with what we've been given. it could be not at all the correct interpretation, just me grasping for well-fitting straws, but idc <3
