Merlin rewatch | 2x04 “Lancelot and Guinevere”
there’s so many events in the show that could’ve been prevented if merlin just listened to his gut instead of listening to gaius or kilgharrah and it’s making me incredibly frustrated >:(
Arthur: I’m fine.
Merlin: You’re fine? That’s good. I’m going to put that on your tombstone. ‘He said he was fine. He was wrong’.
just want it on the record that i hate jousting
The Druid boy is hiding behind the screen.
[at Merlin's funeral]
Arthur: [solemnly placing his hand on the casket and sobbing] How could you do this to me we are so understaffed today
All parents damage their children. It cannot be helped. Youth, like pristine glass, absorbs the prints of its handlers. Some parents smudge, others crack, a few shatter childhoods completely into jagged little pieces, beyond repair.

arthur’s relationship with magic is so complicated? because he has been raised on the belief that magic is inherently evil because of uther and every time that belief gets shaken something happens that just convinces him that his father had been right all along. every time he tries to see sorcery as something good, something terrible happens because of magic and it just enforces that belief so much. not even starting about morgana because? he knew her as someone compassionate and kind and just and as soon as she started using magic she became bitter and resentful (in his eyes, not realizing that it was uther who made her this way). the girl who he grew up with changed before his eyes into someone he did not recognize and it was easiest to blame the magic. at the same time, the revelation that he himself is a child of magic just... breaks him? he blames both himself and his father and magic for the death of his mother. basically there are so many reasons why he despises magic but also? he seriously considers legalizing magic for mordred because mordred is his friend and if he sees it as a force for good how bad can it really be? if there are people out there who belief in good magic and people who practise this? is it right for him to immediately write it off as something evil? if magic would’ve been legal, maybe morgana wouldn’t have turned ‘cruel’ but instead come to him?
arthur knew about merlin’s magic way before the final battle. he was just never able to admit it to himself which is why he often joked about how merlin having magic was ridiculous. arthur isn’t oblivious though, he just didn’t want to believe it. more than anything he was hurt that merlin didn’t trust him with his secret.
the thing about arthur is that he can be incredibly diplomatic and gracious around other nobles / people he’s not close with, while if you’ve known him for longer he turns into an actual boy who likes making jokes and having fun and talking back. it’s so sad to see him shoot into this role of valiant prince while he’s still so young and just wants to have the opportunity to be young
