What’s interesting about plants is that unlike with animals, we associate their name with one specific part of their body and not as a whole. So when we look at their evolutionary relationships, we often find unlikely cousins like potato and tomato.

Did you know that potato produces tomato-like fruits?

But don’t even try eating them. They’re poisonous, like other members of the genus Solanum — the deadly nightshades. Bonus fact: you can graft a plant to produce tomato on top and potato under the ground.

Moving on: kale, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprout, turnip, and kohlrabi are all the products of artificial selection. They’re all descendants of the wild mustard.

Looks familiar? It’s because almond belongs to the genus Prunus, which also includes peach, plum, apricot, cherry, and of course, sakura.

Figs and Jackfruit are from the same family, but the Durian is not

The fig and jackfruit are members of the Moraceae family, while the Durian is a relative of the Hibiscus plants.
