Homework Week 14

1.) For my portfolio website, I wanted to keep things incredibly simple and clean. For me, websites with too many pictures and colors are a bit overwhelming and not as pleasing to the eye as something that is more simple and clean so I decided to stick with simplicity. I tried my best to make sure that everything was easy to navigate and that you could view my work easily.

2.) The design decisions that I made to carry out my goals with my website was to stick with very minimal, basic colors like whites, dark grays and blacks. To allow a bit of my personality to shine through, I used a pink color for my logo, but a pink that is not incredibly bright or “pops” too much. I tried my best to work with colors that go together well.

Homework Week 11

1.) The publication that I based my editorial experience off of was Glamour Magazine. The specific article that I referred to was: https://www.glamour.com/story/fenty-beauty-rihanna-legacy

I decided to discuss Rihanna’s beauty line and how it has impacted the beauty industry a year after coming out. I remember when the brand came out and there were so many positive responses towards it so I was very excited to revisit this topic.

2.) In terms of the design decisions that I made, I wanted to emphasize what Rihanna’s brand is known for which is: diversity and inclusivity. I kept the colors very simple by working with a palette I found on Adobe Colors called “Skin tone.” It had a beautiful range of dark shades and I made sure to implement them. For each page, I played around with different spacing between wording and pictures so that each page brought something new to the eye rather than an order that was the same.

Homework Week 9

1.) To design my editorial experience, I plan on using Glamour Magazine as my publication of choice.

-What the beauty industry was like before more makeup shades came into the industry

-A bit about the struggles that women of color had to go through in terms of finding their correct shade of makeup in the past

Homework Week 8

1.) I decided to look at one angle of a topic from my social graphic (lavender oil) and focus more on how to use it rather than focus on its benefits. If it were to be posted on social media, my hope is that it would encourage the viewer to want to get more information about it. I originally wanted to include how to use essential oils in my infographic, but felt it was too much information to include so I decided to bring that to my social graphic.

2.) For my background color, I wanted to stick to a lavender-colored theme to match the topic. I used a mint green for the text to create some more contrast and added a circle around the picture to make it pop and stand out more rather than the picture standing by itself. I didn’t want to put too much text so I just stuck with a few points when there definitely could have been many.

Homework Week 7

1.) The topic that I decided to design my infographic is on essential oils and their benefits/uses. While it isn’t a common topic that Glamour magazine would typically post about, they do take pride informing readers about the importance of self-care every now and then so I thought this idea would fit well with that theme. Essential oils are something that I personally love to use as well and find them beneficial so I felt the need to share.

2.) While making this infographic, I mainly kept the topics of “relaxation,” and “serenity” in mind since those are what describes this overall idea. For colors, I wanted to use a palette that was calming and relaxing to the eye and kind of had a holistic/natural vibe to it. I simply just searched “Spa” on Adobe Color CC to find this color palette. As for the alignment, I initially wanted to stagger the different type of oil sections to create some contrast, but I found that leaving them all to the left-side to looked a lot more pleasing in my opinion.

Homework Week #4

1.) While building this GIF, I wanted to do something relatively simple. I was inspired by some of the gifs I’ve seen on entertainment magazine websites/their social media platforms which are usually short and correlate to the story that is being discussed.

For my GIF, I decided to represent the new cosmetic line by Kylie Jenner which was a collaboration with one of her best friends. After doing some research, I learned that many of the colors were typically warmer, dark tones which inspired my background color. On the packaging of Kylie Cosmetics, there is always lips on the front of the box with a bold lip color on them so I wanted to continue that theme in this GIF as well.

I decided to add confetti last minute at the end to make clear that it was something “new.”

Homework #2

1.) The news organization/publication that I chose to design this mood board for is Glamour Magazine. It is a women’s magazine that discusses topics that range from fashion, beauty and health, to politics, entertainment and culture. Aside from the publication itself, Glamour Magazine has outstanding, active social media platforms that put out content which coincide with the publication’s overall message. I believe this magazine gives readers a bit of everything they need to know in order to stay informed about what is going on in the world in a very fast, engaging, and timely manner. Their content is straightforward and easy to digest as a reader.

2.) For my mood board, I decided to incorporate images that capture Glamour Magazine’s general message. In my mood board, there is a lot of pink that I feel capture the femininity of the magazine. As for the pictures that I used, I used celebrities to convey the entertainment aspect of the magazine as well as some other pictures that convey feminism, productivity, diversity and empowerment. In terms of design/structure, I didn’t really make the images in the board too structured. I admired more of a “collage” type of look when looking at inspiration prior to creating my board and tried to go for that style.

About Me.

I am a junior journalism major who hopes to work in the editorial/magazine writing field in the future. Traveling is another large passion of mine aside from writing so I hope to one day be able to obtain a job that combines the two! I have always had a bit of a fascination with design so I am very much looking forward to seeing what this course will bring this semester.
