PLINK Day #10: Fighting Tournament Game

 Ready to rumble? So this piece represents a gaming genre that was actually one of my biggest faves growing up; Still is. Basically games like Tekken, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, anything where you get to kick some butt.

Considering this was a favorite genre I was out to create some amazing things with this robot and though it didn’t come out to be my favorite in the whole series I think it has so many breakthroughs and risks like the fire hair (which I don’t know why but fighting tournament games always make me think of fighter. I also manage to put “VS” on his stomach and finally managed to make it look like it was actually painted on him, and I modeled his body after a Play Station controller equipped with analog sticks. If I have any regrets I wish I didn’t give him bangs. lol but it’s not a big deal.

Special thanks to the model, Carl. It’s the second as well as last piece he appears in.

Next piece I hope both 80s babies and 90s babies will enjoy.

PLINK Day 9: Gaming Stone Age

IT’S BAAAACK! I’m proud to announce my return to doing PLINK and decided to start with the one that is inspired by what I call the”Gaming Stone Age” which is probably not what everyone else calls it but I basically just represents the begining of gaming. It reminds us of a time where video games were just basic shapes and shapes made of basic shapes and was paired with simple “beeping” and “Plink” sound effects to go with it. It’s simplistic but this is where it all began and the world of video games evolved from that which is actually why I titled the whole series after these types of games.

Now about THIS piece, I wanted to keep it simple but also make it dynamic. I incorporated solid shapes with this 3D robot man which I think works well. He’s playing PONG with himself, keeping score on his nipples and at the same time he rocks a manly fascinator inspired by the iconic alien invaders game. On his tummy is a joy stick, he can move it with his mind (yes, I totally missed the hilarious opportunity to put the joystick where his business belongs but hey, can’t be childish all the time) and you may notice that he’s the first robot in the series whose eyes don’t glow. I really wanted to capture the essence of gaming’s humble beginnings so I didn’t want it to be too techie and I even added a wooden chin strap (though regrettably, it isn’t too noticeable).

Now one could ask “who would build a robot with an aging body” but I find the idea of robots aging interesting so I went with a more mature model because of that along with a face because it’s a finely aged gaming style. Why not go with a more mature model to match.

Speaking of the model I’d like to send props and a thank you for the man who modeled for this.I don’t think he spends as much time in front of the camera as behind it but he’s an excellent photographer who also uses the human figure in his work. Check out his work:

Quick Note: the twist is that he’s wearing a cute little kitty  hat that  says “pussy pow”. It’s not all that clear because I wanted to be really subtle with it. This is my first digital painting. There’s a few parts that look a little off but overall, I’m proud of it.

PLINK-PIECE #8: Early 2000s

Okay... It might take viewers a little while to get this one but I’m proud nonetheless...

So this is the eighth piece in the PLINK series. It takes inspiration from the video games of the early 2000s where the graphics have evolved since the 90s but it’s still kinda stiff.. For example, Tekken 3 had the SEEMINGLY nice graphics at the time of it’s debut but we looked at that game when Tekken 4 came out and we can see the blockiness of it’s graphics. Now look at Tekken 4 now; the wrinkles in their clothing look painted on, their hair barely moves. You know where I’m going with this.

So to represents 2000s graphics I dressed my model with a stiff haircut and made his face extra shiny because 2000s game graphics kinda reminded me of my toys OF those characters.

In the 2000s my brother and I got our gaming kicks out of the PS2 so I chose that system for inspiration in the robotic design of my model’s body. If you look at his face you can see that his jaw muscle is where the game disk goes and to open it, and to turn the system on, those buttons on his chest which is also where you can put the memory card and game controller.

PLINK: Piece 7-Early 80s Video Games

Now THIS one was painful. lol but I enjoyed doing it.

Okay so up next in PLINK is the games of the early 80s like the Super Mario Bros, Legend of Zelda. Anything that can be summed up in a bunch of tiny squares.

So I just made his body look like an NES controller and made his beard hair and eyebrows super pixelated looking. My favorite part was the eyes. This may be the only time I use two colors but I figured why not draw a little extra 80s inspiration with the 3D vibe.

Anyway I’m proud of this one.

Plink Day 5- Driving Video Games

So I feel like I’m getting my groove back here:

So today’s PLINK drawing is inspired by various diving games like Burn Out, Need for Speed, Pole Position, Midnight Club, etc...

Now, I personally haven’t played a good driving game in a very long time but if I can recall, MOST of these games can be played with a special controller shaped like a steering wheel and I think my older brother actually had one when he was learning how to drive and was getting obsessed with the concept of driving. 

He was stopping at EVERY stop light on Grand Theft Auto games which you’re probably supposed to but I, personally, was so used to seeing people run them and driving recklessly. lol 

but back to my illustration, I designed the model’s torso with the buttons I saw on a steering wheel but I didn't incorporate the actual steering wheel because I felt it would have gotten in the way of everything I was doing here. Instead, I had my model pose as if he was gripping an invisible one and I equipped him with a kick-ass red and black helmet. 

So this is number 6, and I am three from reaching the half point.

PLINK: Day 4- Dancing Games

So this one was a bit of a struggle.

So this is the 5th piece in PLINK and it is representative of dancing video games like DDR, Just Dance, etc. etc. 

The model has a big ol’ robotic afro because  no matter what the video game it’s ALWAYS gonna make reference to the disco era for some reason. I got pretty lazy with the body. Just a few arrows and a foot pad. but I’m still kinda proud...kinda sorta.

PLINK Day 4- Cutesie Video Games

MEOW!

Pretty early entry. I actually finished this REALLY early in the morning. I started yesterday evening and finished at three in the morning. I just couldn't put the stylus down.

So this piece represents the games every male gamer won’t admit that he played at least fr a couple minutes, or at the very least, picked Kirby in Super Smash Bros. I know I had my copy of Nintendogs. lol

Anyway, this model is equipped with a cutie colossal kitty cat helmet and a body modeled after a handheld gaming device.

PLINK-Day 3

PIECE 3: CELL PHONE APPS ©

So this one is my favorite of the series so far. It’s inspired by cell phone apps that consume our time therefore making it just as addicting as the video games we played in the time where it was a hassle just sending a text. The apps hovering around his head and beaming out of his eye are inspired by REAL apps that has addicted people all over the nation. Air hugs if you can guess which parodies what.

Anyway, since the cell phone is the smallest device of anything, I kept the stylization of the model simple by just by putting a camera lens in his chest and letting the app icons do the speaking for the piece.

PLINK- Day 2

So yes, I did post this on the same day as the first one but I called that one Day 1 because I actually finished that one yesterday before beginning that one this same night so on the day I finish it, that’s the day I land on.

Anyway this one is based off the building-based video games that aren’t exactly AS popular except maybe minecraft. I know I did have this computer game when I was younger called roller coaster tycoon where you had to build up your own amusement park and made money off of it. The model is has no particular design outside the building-esque head piece but I tried to make his chest plates like clicker buttons.

The Wait Is Over.... Well, Kinda Sorta Sorta Kinda Almost Over...

So I've finally reached the end of the rope.

I'm exhausted but I have a great sense of relief it's almost over.

Did this today during the model slam. It was  drawn from a pose sent to me by a model over the pond.

Every now and then I didn't feel like drawing the poses there so I just went ahead and did my own thing and this is the result.

So as I mentioned in a previous post a little while ago, our school has the occasional model slams and I just want to share the ones that I did. I started with traditional and then went ahead and drew them in digital. It was a fun day today.
