Not to be dramatic but I genuinely believe the gymternet is doing irreparable harm to these gymnasts by making them believe even neutral statements are negative or that criticism is in itself hateful.

i think suni leaving ncaa is best for everyone involved. it’s clear she doesn’t enjoy being at auburn (considering she is Never There), and that she prefers the elite scene and doing elite skills. she had no desire to get a degree and doesn’t need to, so she has no reason to suffer through three more years of a college she hates. and for the auburn team, i’m sure there’s at least some resentment for the different standards suni is held to. the rest of the team is rarely allowed to go visit family or go on vacations, has to miss holidays etc, while suni is never on campus with the team and is constantly traveling whenever she wants to. it’s probably hard for some of the girls on the team to know that a lineup spot on every event and scholarship spot is taken by someone who is never at practice and doesn’t care about the team. sure, suni brought more popularity to ncaa, but elite is what she loves and this decision is very clearly what’s best for everyone

This is a defense of Sarah Jantzi not calling the police when she overheard minors describing sexual abuse.

Jantzi suspected Nassar’s behavior was sexual abuse and alerted Gina Nichols, Maggie’s mother. On June 17, ten days after the national team camp broke, Jantzi sent a text message to Rhonda Faehn, the senior vice president of USA Gymnastics and the head of the women’s program, asking if Faehn could talk on the phone.

You can’t defend the 35-year-old woman who suspected a minor had been sexually abused and didn’t call the cops on the basis of the culture. She’s part of the culture at that point.
