Dinah had been MIA on an off world mission for a very long time. When she finally got back she got hit with all the news about Roy and she knew what she needed to do.
📱: Roy.
@canarycries4u
📱: i know i know my actions are disappointing
📱: something something i should come home and be a good guy again
📱: im not texting you to get mad at you.
📱: where are you?
📱: Vietnam.
📱: my kid is here, where else could i ever want to be than where she is?
📱: but it’s going oh so fucking well
📱: Jade has a perfect life and someone to be with
📱: im coming to see you. It will be a day, but im coming.
She wasn't giving him a choice to be self destructive and isolate himself
📱: chill. I haven’t used since i got here
Roy was half tempted to throw his phone at the wall. He figured she assumed he was using again, not that she was otherwise worried.
📱: 🤨
📱: did i say that?
📱: im coming to see you, don't put words on my mouth
📱: I’m fine
📱: I've been gone for way too long and i want to see you.
📱: can't deny me seeing you

It did Infact take her a day to come down but she did show up.
She was nice to the family and then went up to Roy's room and knocked on the door
He was cleaning his guns, but he paused when he heard the knock. “Come in,” Roy replied in Vietnamese.
She opened the door and stepped inside, closing it behind her
"hi Roy"
He breathed a quiet sigh of relief when he saw her. “Sorry, I thought you were one of them,” he motioned toward the door to indicate the family nice enough to rent him a room.
She watched him. Part of her wanted to pull him into a hug and smother him like her child. But she doesn't.
"i get it, I'm happy to see you" she smiles
“You may be the only person alive right now that would say that,” he told her with a frown. Roy hesitated, then set his gun pieces down and walked over to hug her.
She wraps her arms around him lovingly
"well I'll gladly hold that title then"
Seeing Roy's frown broke her heart and she wished she could make everything better for him
“You should see her, Dinah,” Roy told her. “She’s beautiful, even with my smile,” he joked. “And she’s so smart and seems kind and I missed it. I missed everything. She’s a teenager and I never even knew and I fucking missed it.” There were tears in his eyes threatening to fall now.
She runs a hand through his hair and still hugs him
"I'd love to see her." She says softly
"I'm sorry you were wronged." She shakes her head slightly "that woman is evil..." But she wasn't going to lecture Roy on falling in love, that wasn't his fault
He pulled away to pace a bit. “Maybe it’s karma,” Roy muttered, rubbing at his arm where her use needles very rarely. “I’m not a good man. I’ve done things, hurt people…but she deserved to have a father in her life too.”
“Jade calls me selfish, but this…” He sighed. No one else seemed to agree that what she’d done was wrong, so it was a relief that Dinah did, but Roy still blamed himself somehow.
She let him pace "this isn't your fault. How could it be? You weren't told. And this isn't karma, you did everything you could to keep her safe and she can't even extend a fraction of that kindness back. It's not you, it's her."
“She moved on. Met someone else who can’t stand our daughter. How is that fair to Lian?” Roy questioned. He wasn't insane to think it wasn't, right? “And she called me selfish.”
She frowns "it isn't fair." She agreed
"you can't take half of what she says as truth Roy.."
“It’s hard not to. I lost everything for her, protecting her, and all these years she was right here. I don’t know what to do, Dinah. I have no place here, they’ve made that very clear, but I won’t abandon my daughter now that I know about her either.”
"I'll stay with you until you have things figured out, i can even rent us an actual place so your daughter can have a place to visit you"
“You’d do that for me?” He wasn’t sure why he was always surprised when Dinah helped him since she’d always been there for him.
She smiles and nods "of course, I'd do a lot for you kiddo" even if he wasn't a kid anymore
“Feels like you're the only one in my corner,” he admitted, grateful for her.
"you're my family, we stick together" she reassured him
“I want to use so bad,” he admitted. It had been about six months since his last slip up.
She frowns. She could tell him it wasn't good for him, try to reason with him, give him the whole 9 yards
"I'm here for you." Is what she decided, let him know no matter what he did he had her.
Of course she didn't want him to use but he didn't need a lecture right now
He hugged her again, and when he pulled away he had new questions. “I don’t…know how to be a dad? I missed so much, she doesn’t even know me, what if I can’t do it right?”
"no one knows how to parent, trust me. But the fact you want to be there is the first step. She doesn't know you, so you've got to show up for her, get to know her.
Getting in your head doesn't build a relationship, action does"
She puts a hand in his shoulder
"you can't fix the past but you sure can show up in the present"
“That means committing to staying here, and…probably no more Arsenal,” he realized. He’d done some questionable things for his government, but he was still mostly a hero. He could be associating with a criminal and remain such according to his friends. Dick had had some particularly scathing comments to make the first time.
She couldn't commit to supporting him here forever but she'd absolutely stay until he was stable
"that's a choice you have to make unfortunately... maybe.... maybe a new start could help you? You don't have to stop helping people just because you moved"
“I’ve been wearing a mask since I could walk. I just don’t know who I am without Arsenal,” he told her quietly. And wasn't that just tragic?
She puts her hand on his cheek "you're Roy Harper. You're kind, you're brave, you're compassionate. That doesn't go away if you aren't arsenal"
“I’m also a recovering addict with perfect aim and anger issues,” he joked with a sad smile. “But I get what you’re saying. Thank you.”
“She changes everything. The moment I learned she existed my entire path forward shifted.”
She rolls her eyes but smiles at his joke
"kids change everything" she agreed
"you've got to figure out how you're gonna live here and what you're going to do with yourself"
"first thing i can help with is a place to stay that is your own"
“I probably should have taken care of that by now, but I wasn’t sure if she’d really want me around or not at first,” Roy explained. “I’m still not. Lian is difficult to read.”
She waves his first comment off "you had a lot to think about"
And then she chuckled "she probably gets it from her parents"
“She was on a job with Jade. That’s no life for a child,” he insisted.
"you're right." She agreed
"but it is her life, it's all she knows so you have to work within it. You can't take her out of it, could you have been taken out of being speedy?"
She sighs "you can focus on things that should have been or should be but you're gonna miss whats happening now and shifting it to give her a better future"
“I just feel powerless. She’s my daughter too, and I’ve never had any say in how to keep her safe,” he reminded Dinah. “And Jade doesn’t think she did anything wrong. She’s got her happy life set up just how she wants it and won’t admit any wrong doing.” Made him feel like he’d deserved it even if logic said that was far from the case.
"Do you want me to go talk to her? You shouldn't feel powerless anymore, you deserve a say"
“What good would it do? She thinks she made the right choice. No one is changing her mind about that except maybe Lian herself,” Roy reasoned. “Jade’s arrogant. She has her life the way she wants it despite dating a guy that can’t stand our kid at all,” he muttered bitterly. “But somehow I’m the bad guy.”
She sighs
"I want to help you, i don't know how to do that. Everything you've said is correct, it's not fair, there isn't anything to do.
The only person's opinion you can change is Lian's, so that's the goal. Be there for that little girl the best you can with Jade in the way"
“She’s changed. This isn’t the Jade I—” Roy sighed. That didn’t matter. It never would again. “But you're right. Lian is the important one. I just don’t know how to connect to her.”
"it's definitely hard at first. When ollie first toom you in i had no idea what to do or say to you.... it's kind of just trial and error"
“I never imagined I’d life this long, let alone be a dad,” he admitted. “This life we lead behind a mask, it’s not an easy one.”
She smiles at him sadly and softly
"it'll be hard for sure, but you're strong, you've made it this far"
“I’m a junkie that can never use again. I won’t be what Jade thinks I am.” He glanced down at his arms, frowning. “I’ve got both nothing and everything to prove.”
She nods "only person you have to prove anything to is your daughter. Jade's opinions of you don't matter, you aren't whatever twisted image she made of you"
“She thinks I’m a coward. Her boyfriend threatened to kill me,” he scoffed at the idea.
"i think her opinions are stupid"
“The absolute worst part of this, the Shakespearean tragedy of it all, is that I never stopped loving her,” Roy admitted with a sad smile. “So, you see, unfortunately, what she thinks matters to me. I went back for her, but she’d already gone, and she found a replacement easily enough but it won’t be that easy for me. Not when she was my…” He paused, rethinking that word he’d been about to say. “It just won’t be easy.”
"...im sorry.." she says empatheticly.
“Anyway, enough of my sob story. You stay here tonight—I’ve slept on worse floors—and we’ll find me a permanent place tomorrow. Deal?”
She nods "alright, tomorrow we'll get you a good place. Maybe we go out for dinner. Get you something good in your system" it wasn't a question. She wasn't sure how well Roy was eating and wanted to make sure he got a good meal

It did Infact take her a day to come down but she did show up.
She was nice to the family and then went up to Roy's room and knocked on the door
He was cleaning his guns, but he paused when he heard the knock. “Come in,” Roy replied in Vietnamese.
