McCrory zings Spaulding â who welcomes the attention
JANUARY 26, 2016 6:28 PM
Gov. Pat McCroryâs re-election campaign sent out a fundraising plea on Tuesday that singled out Democratic primary contender Ken Spaulding, a Durham attorney who has lagged far behind his Democratic primary opponent, Attorney General Roy Cooper, in campaign contributions.
McCroryâs email touted his expansion of charter schools and support of home schools.
âBut while we're focused on helping students and families, Democrats like Ken Spaulding and special interest groups predictably have been attacking school choice both inside and outside the courtroom to selfishly advance their own power and motives,â McCrory said.

Democrat Ken Spaulding criticizes Roy Cooper for King Day email about voting rights
Ken Spaulding of Durham, a Democrat running for governor, criticized Democratic opponent Attorney General Roy Cooper for distributing an email Monday outlining Cooperâs support for voting rights and quoting the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
Cooperâs office will be fighting a voting-rights lawsuit in federal court next week in Winston-Salem, Spaulding said.
Monday was the national holiday honoring King, who was assassinated in April 1968.
âYou do not dishonor the African American community and other communities by being in court fighting against our right to vote,â Spaulding told about 35 people Tuesday at a meeting of the Ministers Conference of Winston-Salem and Vicinity at Emmanuel Baptist Church. âThose rights are important to us.â
Morgan Jackson, a spokesman for Cooper, responded on Wednesday to Spaulding's criticism: âIt is the duty under the law for the attorney general's office to defend the state and state agencies when they get sued Roy Cooper strongly opposes these new voting laws, and he will work now and as Governor to make it easier for people to register and vote."

In campaign stop, Durham attorney criticizes Cooperâs record
Durham attorney Ken Spaulding on Tuesday questioned the true party affiliation of North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper, the Democratic front-runner for governor.
Spaulding, also running for governor as a Democrat, called Cooper a âRepublican-Democratâ during a fiery speech to the Rowan Senior Democrats. Starting with teacher tenure, Spaulding accused Cooper of fighting for Republican interests in court.

GASTONIA
Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ken Spaulding Tuesday sought to link rival Roy Cooper to N.C. Gov. Pat McCrory and Republican lawmakers.
Spaulding made his comments before meeting with a handful of supporters at a Gastonia restaurant.
The 71-year-old Durham lawyer criticized the Democratic attorney general for defending Republican-passed laws involving teacher tenure, grants to allow students to attend private schools and voting changes â what one radio ad calls âthe most restrictive voter suppression laws in America.â

Intriguing races in 10-week sprint to N Carolina primary
BY GARY D. ROBERTSON
Associated PressÂ
 RALEIGH, N.C.
The North Carolina primary ballot is usually long in any presidential year because there are also always nominee elections for governor and other Council of State positions, and for Congress and the Legislature. U.S. Senate nominations and a $2 billion bond question also sit on this year's ballot.
The greatest change about the 2016 primary is the March 15 election date â nearly two months earlier than normal because lawmakers wanted North Carolina to have more influence in the presidential nomination process.
With party candidate filings completed before Christmas, here are some races to watch in the 10-week sprint to the election:

Subject: Syrian Refugees ( No agreement with either McCrory or Cooper )
Mothers and children running for their lives from ruthless dictators and ISIS killers is disturbing and quite sad. I want to make this very clear. As a person who was born and raised in segregation, I know personally the hurt and pain that discrimination can cause. I am therefore opposed to all discrimination be it against white, black, brown or Syrian.
The vetting and security measures taken by our federal government usually take 18 to 24 months or more before a person is allowed to settle in our country as a refugee. This coupled with proper and effective state enforcement of our laws does provide a sound basis for our citizens' protection and security. As Governor, I will always protect North Carolina.
So no, I do not agree with Governor Pat McCrory's and Attorney General Roy Cooper's call for a "pause" which is based on political popularity and not the facts. A year and a half to two full years with the current ongoing federal comprehensive vetting is already taking place.
Election or no election, this is my honest opinion.

Democratic Candidate for Governor of North Carolina
