candice sighed as she sat on a table with an ice bag pressed against her jaw. an inmate caught her good, nearly causing her to fall on the floor, but she was lucky to have a guard come and save her. ❝ i hate coming in here, i really do. ❞ she mumbled to her cop buddy. the brunette just hoped it didn't leave too bad of a mark.
things for scotty have been a complete and total shit show. as of late, his job was hanging on by a thread and the man in all honesty had no fuckin clue on how he hung on for this long. the department should've fired him a very long time ago but the man was thankful for his captain and team for keeping their mouths shut. it was none of their business if he was on another mental break. was he? probably. but this time, this time scotty knew how to hide it better. drugs and sex and alcohol helped with it. sex with candice helped with it and god he fuckin missed her. the man missed her so much and it was his fault, he was closing himself off again. as the man finished his paperwork, the breath he took felt like a lifeline almost. felt like he was waiting for candice to save him once more.
cocking his head to the side, scotty then looked at her and nodded "i'm done. goodbye paperwork. i'm officially finished. " he sucked in a breath again and then swallowed the lump that formed in his throat. she made him nervous, but in a good way. always giving him damn butterflies. was that even a thing anymore? he only ever got the butterfly feeling around alyssa. as she stuck her hand out, he took it within a second. not even. there she was, saving him. always saving him. his chest tightened and took a moment but then realized where they were and scotty nodded his head "sounds like a really good idea." scotty said honestly and then moved a tad closer, almost whispering in her ear "i feel like i cant breathe again, please dont leave me. just stay with me tonight. please. i breathe better when im with you." scotty fiddled around with the ring around his neck "please."
if there was one thing candice hated was seeing the people that she cared about struggle. scotty was no different in that regard. it was the reason she stuck by his side through it all and will til this day. there was a point in time where she wanted to be the one that took it all away. she knew what it was like to lose a loved one. but no matter what she tried nothing worked.
from the moment his hand was in hers, she could feel the familiar connection between them, a bond that only they knew about. it took her back to when she wanted to be his person. ❝ i won't leave you," she confirmed as her eyes met his. ❝ i'll stay with you. ❞ she smiled softly at him. as her eyes took in his appearance, her smile slightly faltered. that ring. his wife. she would always get in the way of them.
before she could hurt her feelings more, she rushed out of the building, leading the older to her car. ❝ if we are going to be on time, we are going to be quick about this. ❞ she quickly stated as she hopped into her car. ❝ i think manny left a suit that you can wear, though it might be a little big.. ❞
Though he had lost the seat, Jason accepted the small victory with nod and a not so subtle satisfaction that he did indeed get there first. It was enough, and he slid in beside Candi at the bar while she ordered them a round of drinks. "Eh, I'm alright. Same old shit, different day." Jason replied, shrugging things off as if he hadn't just run into his ex looking hot as hell in that dress or that he didn't have a sneaking suspicion that crazy shit was about to go down tonight. "What about you? You got anythin' for me?"
candice let out a hum at his comment. ❝ something happened? ❞ while their days were different, she wasn't in a gang though public perception might be different, she hadn't heard anything going down.
❝ no, and if i did i wouldn’t tell you here. ❞ she stated teasingly before grabbing her glass and taking a sip. it surely tasted expensive, yet she found it disgusting. ❝ i never thanked you for your work but thank you, you helped me a lot. and i don’t care if it’s just your job so take my thankfulness. ❞ she quickly ended any protest before they could even begin before downing the rest of the drink— alcohol should never go to waste.
Gabriel couldn't fight off the smirk that crept on his lips. He'd noticed her inside of the party earlier, Officer Morales was hard to miss. He kept enough eyes on her to notice when she had disappeared. So, what was it really that brought him out to the courtyard? A hankering for a cigarette? Or an excuse to talk to her?
Eh, a little column A, a little column B.
Dirty cops were tricky. The woman was like a gun, a weapon he could use to his liking if he placed his hand just right. In the same vein, was the safety ever completely on? No one was ever sure if she would go off. If she did, would she sell him out and the entire Fives Families organization too, just to save her own ass? It was a possibility. It was always a possibility.
Just as much she was a wild card to him, wasn't he the same to her? Could she fully trust him?
"Oh, I hope so," Gabriel quipped back, after another cycle of inhale and exhale of the fumes. "It seems like you know how to keep a secret, don't you, Morales." He was teasing, he was always teasing. Still, there's usually the jaded truth somewhere in the words he spoke.
"As much as I'm surprised you showed up to this shitshow." Gabriel flicked his cigarette. "I'm glad you did." Another flick. "You look nice."
candice had hoped to run into the other tonight, if only to say hi. it was one of the reasons why she came besides trying to get her partner to let loose. the mere thought caused her to grab gabe’s cigarette to take a hit of it herself.
the corner of her lips turned up at the praise. it all depended on the connection to her— how much she cared, how much she loved. ❝ the best in the business, ❞ she confirmed before taking another drag, blowing the smoke up in the sky.
she didn’t understand how he could make her feel like a high school girl around her crush just by being in the same room as her, but he did. and she enjoyed it. it was light and playful. there was no baggage to stress her out. it was easy.
candice’s cheek turned a light shade of red at the compliment but she tried to mask it by scrunching up her eyebrows instead. ❝ nice? ❞ she didn’t put this tight dress on and applied more than her everyday makeup just for nice. taking another drag of his cigarette, she rose to her feet. ❝ do i need to leave and come back? ❞ it was clear he didn’t get a good view.
The brunette shrugged, "Has to be an upgrade from mine." She said with a smile. She let the other take her arm and walk over to the bar. "Not any just yet. I have my eyes out for someone to fill it with but I am also avoiding slipping back in bed wth my ex which is hard when he looks that good in a suit."
once at the bar, candice ordered a drink for the both of them and it was times like these when she was happy that the drinks were not on her tab. ❝ definitely end the night with someone new, if you go to someone you actively trying to stay away from all you going to do is enter a vicious cycle. ❞ she shook her head with a chuckle before quickly downing her drink. ❝ not that have any experience with that, though, ❞ as if a lightbulb went off in her head, she pointed at the other rather excitedly. ❝ life is short, so you should sleep with both of them. ❞
A cop. It was her words that reminded him exactly who he was standing in front of. The thought of her occupation send a cold chill down his spine, he couldn't afford to get caught up in drugs charges and he wasn't so sure that she'd be so willing to let him go with a warning again. "I-.." He stammered out, the room not standing as still as he needed to right now as the fake sober act failed right in front of her. The only thing he could think to do starting to fall from his lips, to start lying. "I had a little bit of weed. Just something to help with being here, having to repeatedly discuss my sisters death." He breathed out slowly, "I'm good, I swear."
growing up, the effects of drugs plagued her life. the death toll of it was the reason she ended up in new york in the first and it's the reason why she is so against it. it was like once someone started they didn't have any control to make themselves stop.
candice let out a sigh. another lie and what was she supposed to do? force him to tell her the truth? she always had a habit of wanting to fix the broken— a nasty habit that she needed to end. ❝ at least drink some water, please. ❞ the word some did a lot of heavy lifting. she didn’t expect him or anyone else to drink water tonight.
after returning his appearance to her standards, she placed her hands behind her back. ❝ if you crash come to me... if someone else gets to you, i won't be able to save your ass. ❞ she warned.
Death and parties was the strangest cocktail ever concocted in Gabriel's humble opinion. And he was a guy who liked to celebrate. Throwing a ball as a memorial was a choice.
He was taking a break from all of the festivities. Even a veteran of a party boy like himself needed a breather sometimes. Keeping a pack of reds in his pocket gave him the perfect excuse to excuse himself. He found his way to a courtyard, just outside of the ball.
Smoking was a nasty habit of his, something he saved for when he was drunk or stressed or bored or a poisonous combination of all of the above. When Gabriel realized he wasn't alone, a sheepish grin rose on his face, with the cig still in between his lips. He raised both hands in surrender. "You caught me," he said to them, his words jumbled by the cancer stick in his mouth. He took another inhale, then took it out of his mouth. "Don't tell my mother."
candice needed pictures of herself in this dress as she didn’t know when the opportunity to dress up would present itself again. she found this spot after five minutes of looking for the perfect background and to her, nothing would beat the moon shining down on her.
the courthouse was beautiful and if she had her way, she would stay out here for the rest of the night. placing her phone against a vase that definitely cost more than she could ever dream of affording, she took a step back so that she was in frame. the sudden sound of movement made her jump. placing a hand over her heart, candice lips parted as her chest rose and fell rapidly. ❝ mi dios, ❞ she mumbled to herself.
as her brain registered who was with her, a shy smile appeared on her nude-stained lips as she tucked her hair behind her ear. ❝ these lips are sealed, ❞ she zipped her lips before giggling lightly. ❝ but you scared the fuck out of me. ❞ she bent down to pick up her phone before making her way to sit next to the younger.
It was a slow day and there was nothing else for him to do besides paperwork, which in hindsight it was a good thing. There was a load of paperwork stacked on his desk for months waiting to be finished. With the weather being shitty, it was a good day to do this. Almost six at night, the Detective put his hands together and rubbed his face. Taking a deep breath, Scotty looked up at Candice and swallowed hard "I think I'm finished." He mumbled, shocked that this was the first time in a long time Scotty has done all of his paperwork. "We should get out of her Morales. Celebrate me actually completing a pile of paperwork within two hours." He let out a shaky breath and rolled up his sleeves for a moment "What do you say? Yes?" It had been a minute since Scotty was in sync with his partner, and she was someone who he was always in sync with but right now he felt distant. "I miss you." The man whispered and swallowed the lump that had formed within his throat "Please."
tonight was about to be the longest of her life. first paperwork then dealing with a bunch of people that she would rather not see. packing everything up, she went up to her partner and sat on the edge of his desk to see how far along his was; to her surprise, he was done. ❝ you’re done? ❞ shock radiated from her voice as her eyes went wide. this was a once in a lifetime thing, especially as of late, but nonetheless she was proud of him.
candice was about to decline the offer. she had other plans, and her night was already mapped out, but as she looked at the other her face softened. she had never seen him like this. the practically begging, it wasn't normal for him especially not while on the job. with a small sigh, she hopped off his desk and stuck her hand out for him to grab.❝ i have a better idea, ❞ she started gently. ❝ there's this gala tonight and we will be able to drink all night and not have to spend a dime. ❞ her smile widened.
It took Jason a moment to register the culprit as friend and not foe, his scowl immediately relenting replaced by a feigned scandalized expression that read: who me? never? “You know it’s not like that, Morales. But I was here first.” Jason harped on it. This time it was all in good fun as he eased up on the back of the chair to allow the boss man's cousin to sit down. If it were anyone else, he may not have been able to back down so easily. “Alright, alright. And since it's on the Blackwell's dime make it a double and whatever top shelf, fancy shit they have. I'm not picky.”
candice let out a chuckle while shaking her head, ❝ of course, you were. ❞ calling a bartender over, she pointed to a pretty gold bottle that had been calling her name ever since she laid her eyes on it. ❝ two doubles, please. ❞ she gave a friendly smile before scooting her chair over so the other could have a place beside her. with a quick thank you escaping her lips, she turned her attention to jason. ❝ how have you been? sorry i haven’t really talked to you since your last job for me. ❞ pressing her lips together, the older felt bad for not keeping in touch.
Nico wouldn't admit this, but it took him at least five minutes to even get the bathroom door back open again. Seeing double and trying to pretend like he was sober was a lot harder than he remembered it to be. Coming face to face with Candice as soon as he felt victorious with the door opening only made his sober act all that harder. "Nada, cálmate." He tried in defense of himself, "I was just going pee."
all she could do was glare at him. ❝ you are trying to lie to a cop right now, mi qeurido. you’re going to have to do better. ❞ the brunette didn’t know what she could do to get it through his head that the road he was heading down wasn’t a good one. it was one that would be hard to turn around from when or if he gathered enough sense. ❝ what did you take? please tell me you didn’t mix. ❞ candice asked while straightening out his clothes. truth be told she didn’t know why she cared so much. if he wanted to waste his life away, she should let him. yet here she was trying to fix something way beyond broken once again.
"If that's collecting dust I want to play in the rest of your closet that isn't." She said with a smile. She felt the same disdain for the event that most people felt. I'm sure the family is grateful but she didn't really know Cali. The main reason she was sucking it up is for Nico. "Well if you need anything a bit stronger, you know where to find me. And besides, I'm pretty sure they are encouraging people to drink."
all she did was let out a laugh. ❝ i think you will be disappointed. ❞ her closet was mostly jeans and while she loved dressing up, she knew by the end of the night she would be rushing to get the dress off. looking over at the bar, she smiled. one wouldn’t hurt, or two. ❝ i’ll keep that in mind, but you right, let’s get a drink. ❞ candice grabbed onto the other’s arm and led her to the bar. ❝ got any plans tonight? ❞

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐈𝐑𝐎𝐍𝐘 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐂𝐄𝐑𝐓𝐀𝐈𝐍𝐋𝐘 far from lost on emmanuel -- the fact that his cousin turned to the side of the law. despite his father being the black sheep of the family, the phoenix that emerged from the ashes of their upbringing. however, his father wore the char like armor, letting it burn him. from that moment on, their bloodline had split into two. emmanuel had always known candi was meant for something greater. better than them -- better than the future that he was bound to from birth: zipties, chain and all. every form of bondage one could think of: it bound the boy to a seat -- aboard a one way train to hell.
he knew why he was here. emmanuel had never been one for the blackwells, despised them actually. even still, he would never wish anything like this upon them. the founding families had earned his distain -- due to the entitlement and privilege that ran through their bloodlines. he enjoyed watching them scramble, cover their own asses by simply throwing dollar bills at the wounds that had been left -- but they were still human. calliope was a sister. a daughter. this time, however, everyone was in danger. his people had been threatened. in true resemblance of a lion protecting his pride, he is more than ready to bare his teeth. but, who is he to attack?
the urge for a smoke break had been biting at his heels for twenty minutes now, and he finally finds himself giving in. emmauel has just placed the cigarette between his lips, announcing his presence to his newfound company with the simple flicker of light. ah, family. " the fuckin' frills in there. how much do ya think all that cost? " he chuckles, taking the very first drag before the smoke dances through the air. it's somehow poetic. " feels a little fuckin' overkill, but i'm okay with drinkin' on their dime. "
life was surely something, putting her into this world that maybe she wasn’t a part of. she remembered when she first passed the academy, eyes bright and wide, dreaming of all the criminals she would lock away. some dream that was and maybe it was a little naive of her to think it. there was always one thing from making her go all the way. family. it’s the one thing that made her stay in this career for this long. it’s the only way the brunette knew how to protect, to help, and most importantly herself.
candice needed a break from all the small talk, fake smiles, and blackwells. coming outside to breathe in the fresh air was the best option; well besides rushing home. while hot, a smile still formed on her face as she stepped outside. she almost didn’t notice the other until a faint light popped up. ❝ don’t even want to think about it. it all seems rather wasteful to me. ❞ sitting down next to him, she snatched the cigarette out of his hand to take a drag of it herself.
after blowing the smoke into the air, she took a good look at emmanuel. it was a shame how they lived in the same city, yet didn’t see each other as often as they should. ❝ thinking about something or just needed a break? ❞ she asked before taking another drag and handing the cig back over to him. she would really like to stop, it wasn’t healthy by any means, but of all the things that could take her life one day— a cigarette was last on her worry list.

candice strutted her way to the bathroom to touch up her makeup when she saw him exiting. ❝ nico? ❞ she questioned as she glanced at his demeanor. absolutely fucking not. ❝ en serio? ❞ she grabbed his jaw to force him to look at her before shaking her head. his eyes were blown. ❝ what are you on right now? ❞
