people always told you that you were born in december, but you have very little belief that this is true. in fact, you don't believe anything your parents say -- such a tragedy for a young boy. and yet, you bite down on your tounge until it bleeds. even still, this was not the earliest time you were surrounded by blood. your father, emiliano cortez, happened to be one of the most formidable hitmen in the world, and trained several foot soldiers to bend at his will. a syndicate if you will, with high prices to pay for their deployment. and while may had a choice, choosing this life, you were amongst the few that didn't. you were trained to kill a grown man with your bare hands by the time you were eight years old ( much to your father's pride ), becoming an artist with several weapons by the time you were fifteen.
you were given the gift of a younger sister when you were ten, and you became a devoted big brother -- well, as much so as you could be under your father's watchful eye. it wasn't like your mother left any amount of room for an opportunity either. you were protective over her. you watched her a little closer when your father was around, and stood very firm that she was not to be brought into this. the life your father had forced you into.
if either if you were going to have a choice, you were intent on it being her.
2013
even if you were legally an adult, you had felt like one for as long as you were able to form memories. while others around you had talked about childhood, you were becoming a machine. while you had assisted on jobs in your early years of life ( who would suspect a school-aged young boy with a smile like yours ? ), it's now you begin to establish yourself. make a name for yourself, but only amongst others in your field. to everyone else, you were every parents dream. respectful. smart. charming. and you were well on your way to changing everything for your family.
[ REDACTED ]
early 2015
your father makes sure you escape to the united states in a freight carrier under the cover of night, with enough money to help you get by for a couple weeks. if you needed more money, he would be sure to get it to you. you realize quickly that he had no intention on keeping that promise. even still, you get two jobs to sustain yourself and while you barely scrape by -- it's enough. the bills are paid, you have minimal credit card debt and a roof over your head, all by the age of twenty. and yet, you know you're meant for more.
by chance, you meet an individual who bares crimson blood in a bar by your apartment. and while you think it's a coincidence, it isn't. they know who you are, and they've been going to great lengths to find you. they know of your work, your father's work, and they believe you'd be an asset to them. this time, you have the luxury of choice. this time, you choose to reenter the life you had left behind. but this time, alongside a family that believed you truly mattered. you're not quite used to that feeling yet.
2024
just as your father suspected. while you prove yourself to be a formidable opponent, you certainly do still have a lot to learn. namely, you need to control your anger. you left mexico for a reason -- to make something of yourself. your father's name isn't following you anymore. while some may be ashamed to bare your past, it causes people to fear you. and while that has always been enough for you, there are times when you wonder if you were meant for something more. more than just fear.
despite it all -- you would do anything for those who you've aligned yourself with. for a time they were nothing more than a means of protection ( they had reach, they could save you from the demons in your closet -- clawing their way out ), but they have quickly become your family. you think often of your sister, if she ever made it out. you never told her why you left. one minute you were there, making her pancakes before school. the next? you were gone. you bet your father has cleared out your childhood bedroom by now. he must have grown tired of the dust dancing through the air. and yet, he never seems to get tired enough to tell your sister why you left.
you can only assume as much.
