Musing about the new Boards of Canada activity/new song, there is obviously a lot to dissect, but one thing that I think is interesting is that a lot of what they're showing us feels very reminiscent of their past works. Like the eyeless children on the posters that have been going up being reminiscent of the faceless children on MHTRTC cover. Or the religious themes in the VHS tapes that they sent out + Tape 05 being reminiscent of Geogaddi/IABPOITC. Or even the 'ARG' type marketing campaign they're doing in general being reminiscent of the album rollout for Tomorrow's Harvest.

And it's not like those themes were exclusive to those albums, those are all ideas they've explored in all of their work, so it's on brand for them. But I mean... it's VERY on brand, yknow? Like, exactly what you think of when you think of BOC. A little on the nose.

Maybe now that it's been ~13 years since their last full length project, they're taking their previous exploration of memory/nostalgia, and applying it to themselves. Taking their own art and distorting it into something that feels like what you remember Boards of Canada being, but with something subtly off about it. Like a fond memory that's faded with time, so faded that you can't quite remember what made it fond to begin with. Maybe even making a little commentary on their legacy as musicians, whatever opinion that might be.

Or idk maybe they're just using familiar imagery to reintroduce themselves to the public so people remember what they're about before they make a new thing. I don't know. Just thinking

I don't think that's what the main theme of the album is gonna be, but that could be a smaller aspect to it. To me the album is very obviously going to be something more akin to a revisit of the themes from Geogaddi and Tomorrow's Harvest.

Guessing based off the imagery in Tape 05 and the mailed-out VHS tapes, I think an overall theme of the album could be societal alienation. That is to say, communities being controlled and pushed away from one another through religion. The images of TV evangelists, people praying, someone holding up a cross, I've seen people online say there is direct imagery of cults. All of this now added with some clips in Tape 05 being footage of people with SMGs/assault weapons, I think the brothers might be trying to paint a picture of a society driven away from each other to the point of resulting in violent extremes.

I say this because my theory for LP5 was that it was probably going to be some sort of commentary on the current state of the world. Tomorrow's Harvest felt like a warning for what our future could be if we kept going the way we were going, and since the world hasn't course-corrected since then, I think the brothers might want to give a more blunt commentary on things this time around. And it wouldn't be far off to say that our current society is being alienated from each other through religion, extreme politics, etc. All made worse by the isolation slowly taking hold of my generation and the generations after mine, caused by the internet and the general hostility of the world right now.

Something like that could be interesting. Maybe it would be a little cliché if they made a "ouhgh soceity..." album but theres a lot of fuckin dick fuck shit happening right now so I think I forgive them if they wanna make art about it.

It's way too early to know for sure of course, and I haven't done any deep diving into any secret messages in the tapes or whatever (I guess it hasn't even been confirmed that all of this is for a new album either (but cmon it has to be)). But that's my current thoughts on it anyway.

TEMPORARY TAMPERMONKEY ROLLBACK PATCH FOR TUMBLR NOTES (BETA)

Its definitely not perfect because the note aggregates are still proving to be a real son of a bitch to fix (if anyone wants to help patch that youre more than welcome) but it should at least preserve the original note count and get rid of the extra note bars.
