Albatross from Wings of Fire

Design Notes: Albatross's design in the books is both a personal favorite and one of the best in the series. Its unique and memeoriable, and converys all Albatross's character, he's a comforting grandfather with uh, murderous capablities and no sense solidarity, which I captured with his unassuming face contrasting his large sharp fins. I really liked the idea of a boney, almostly sickly looking Albatross, so I elongated his neck and head that he holds low. To emphasis his age and sickly vibe I gave him large boney shoulders that the limbs droop from and tired, eeriely blue eyes.

An under explored element of Albatross's design is how similar it is to Anenomes (at least arc 2 Anenomes design, I now there's some confusion over how pink she's suppose to be). I think so many fans fixate on him potentially being part icewing that they miss that his design is also similar to our dear Anenome, to whom he is also thematically and narratively similar to as well. I wanted to highlight that connected with the red accent. This man is what Anenome could become is she wasn't able to find comfort, solace in others and conquer her ego in book 9.

Stop tagging my Starflight design as a spoilers. It's been almost 11 years since that book came out, the series is basically done, everyone in the WoF community already knows he got burned. And if people are new the series and active in the fandom they're bound to get spoiled by something like a protagonist getting permanently injured, epecially since it happened 11 YEARS AGO.

It's also weird that you all only spoil tag Starflight and not my Clay and Kinkajou designs despite all having scars from major events. Clay nearly died and has a permant injury (and in my deisgn a scar) and Kinkajou got scared from Grandeurs venom. Like I dunno the only design that gets the "spoilers" tag is the more severely scared character design, pretty weird.

Anyway personal pet peeve, STOP IT.

Explanation and update for where all my designs have been: I'm adulting. I'm in college and have a part time plus general life things limit and divide my free time. I've also been wanting to step away from WoF for various reasons so my motivation to work on this is low. HOWEVER I am determine to at least design all the PoV characters before putting this blog in hibernation so please don't worry about that.

The biggest thing slowing me down with the designs, beside lack of time, is mostly not knowing what to do for Turtle and especially Winter and refusing to move onto Darkstalker or Arc three. I have finally cracked Turtle and to make for the lack of art am sharing a doodle of him while I work on his design! Please enjoy our fat fish boy.

Some design notes!

All I knew going in was I wanted his sail to be styled like the ‘bad’ boy archetype. His patterning is a combination of various lizard markings and to be evocative of wind (since apparently a qibli is a type of wind). My take is a bit out there but I really love it.

Also gave him a primordial pouch like some cats have. Should a flying lizard have one? Probably not, but Qibli is full of love so I deemed it important.

Kinkajou from Wings of Fire

Some design notes!

I wanted her design to play into how she’s typically a sweet and kind dragon but she's capable of harm and can be surprisingly dangerous (see her turning Darkstalker into Peacemaker). So I made her look over all sweet and harmless with big round and soft edges on her frill, wings, and ear, but have her body have sharp edges to hint at her dark side.

She's violet over pink because uh... complementary colors! Yeah let's go with that. Totally intentional.

ALSO! I can't believe I forgot to mention this! She has her venom scar she received from Grandeur because she loved and more designs for her should have it!

Some design notes:

I wanted to play around with the idea of giving Nightwings darker bellies instead of lighter ones since I think it'd be better night camouflage. Fun fact. I like to imagine Moon and Clearsights eye and scale color is reverse! Just to connect them a little!

I don't really feel like I have much to say other than wanting her to come across and gentle and pretty.

Some fun design thoughts for Sunny:

Because she's one of, if not the most, infantilized character by the fandom I wanted to get her a "meaner" design as to not feed into that. While I still wanted her to look friendly and optimistic i didn't want it to be the only thing her design conveyed. This girl is spiteful, is frustrated that's she's (ironically) infantilized by her freinds and had a self-worth issue that she covered up with the prophecy. I wanted to give a design that could convey all of that and I think I did well.

Some design notes!

For Clay's scar I wanted it to be reflective of both a snake bite (the two dots and patterning) and a burn (colors). I debated having more dots for when Peril digged her talons into his scales but couldn't figure out how to make it not cluttered and I prefer it looking more like a venomous snake bite.

His patterning and heart chest are inspired by this design by Archie WoF Designs

Other than that I just wanted him to look big and friendly cause thats Clay!
