Burgerama Band #11: The Coathangers (Merry Go Round)

Kind of a dark-B-52’s vibe. They have all the excellent bouncy harmonies and their lead singer even has a very similar voice to that of Kate Pierson but their songs aren’t quite as silly and fantastical as 80s classics like “Planet Claire”. And while I’m a huge fan of the B-52’s and all of their silliness, I am glad to see that modern underground bands are paying homage to those guys without ripping them off completely. Burgerama Band #10: Cherry Glazerr

requested by mallrat-buzzcut One word. “ugh”. Cherry Glazerr, no matter how many times I try to like them, are without a doubt the most disappointing band within the indie music community. I cannot wrap my head around their hype. But then again, I’ve never been into the “see its cute because it sucks!” thing. The only listenable song on “Haxel Princess” is the very first one, and that’s because it’s the only one with lyrics that ALMOST aren’t vapid. I get that the point of this band is that they are “super adorbs teen girls who are way dreamy and love tumblr” but I just feel like chick bands deserve more credit. Babes can totally rock, but these ones sure as hell don’t. This music is simply too light. It has no flavor. Burgerama Band #9: Mac Demarco

Requested by funeralhome 420, emilyssassylime When watching Mac Demarco put on lipstick in the “My Kind of Woman” video, all I can think about is wishing I could bear children so that I could grow his sweet, sweet gaptoothed babies inside my womb. His pure absurdity and genius allows me to creep myself out on a whole new level. I don’t know if someone is going to get mad at me for making this comparison, but I feel like Mac Demarco is sort of a modern day beached-out California version of Lou Reed (even though Mac is from Canada.) On the real though, everything about this dude, from the excellence of his album “2” to the good vibes that just seep out of his skin, just makes me wanna sit down and knock back a couple crappy beers and wax nostolgic. Burgerama Band #8: Gap Dream- Shine Your Light (bonus edition)

(Note: I'm totally broke right now and couldn't afford the $15 for this entire album and am too much of an ethical purist to try to find a way to steal it. So this review is based off of the three songs that were available to listen to on bandcamp: "Shine Your Light", "Fantastic Sam", and "Shine Your Love" 

     So far, I think Gap Dream has won Burgerama. Despite Gap Dream's tumblr tag being riddled with terrible body image things that are kind of hard to look at, I'm stoked to report that "Shine Your Light (Bonus Edition) is a totally magical experience filled with wonder, glee, and sparkly synth sounds that no one else in the world can pull off. 

     The "Shine Your Light" music video was so excellent that I watched it 8 times in a row. That actor dude has the greatest facial expressions of all time, and the film-noir-meets-x-files-ness of it all was just pulled off so perfectly. 

     These guys win the prize for all-time-favorite-use of sounds. From the sparkly magical synths of Shine Your Light to the funky and warbly sound effects in Fantastic Sam(which, by the way, made me want to take mushrooms and go on a bouncy forest adventure) to the uplifting beautiful horns in "Shine Your Love". I haven't heard horns pulled off in alt music the entire time that I have been alive on this planet. Thank you for that. Thank you.

     And if you are reading this, Gap Dream, thank you for your optimism. Non-pop musicians are so grumpy most of the time, and this was the freshest breath of air i have taken in so long. Within the three songs I was allowed to listen to you covered more unique ground than any other band on this crazy long Burgerama bill has in their entire discography. Thank you for not being apathetic. Thank you. Thank you. 

I have no criticisms. You are perfect. I love you. Goodnight.

I'm looking through Gap Dream's tag while writing this review and let me tell you most of these photos are chicks with "thigh gaps" or whatever and it must be pretty weird to be Gap Dream if they look through their own tag.

from “shine your light” by gap dream. lately i’ve been telling myself to be brave because sometimes, that’s all there is left. i get stomach aches when i get scared, and i’ve gotten a few recently. but courage (or as i heard it, ‘shining your light’), despite seeming overwhelming and hard every now and then, is necessary. sometimes it’s really hard to shine your light. by that i mean, sometimes it’s really hard for me to shine my light. i’m trying to shine my light so brightly right now, and it’s hard. (geez, how redundant am i right now?). i imagine and see myself as an illustrated, whimsical adventurer (based on my favorite aspects of myself and my life) and the wind is blowing my hair, and my feet are firmly planted and i may as well be holding a sword and shield. a scimitar (exquisite) and an elven shield (superior), to be exact. are these skyrim references doing it for you?
