What if Saturn was leader of Team Galactic instead of Cyrus?

Oh God.

Oooooh God.

Pretty much the way I see it, there’s about two ways that Saturn could ever become the official leader of Team Galactic without it being postgame. The first is considerably more mundane: he never allows Cyrus to have the degree of control over him that he does in mainverse. They may meet, they may chat, but at the end of the day, instead of being starstruck and completely infatuated coughwithhismindofcoursecough Saturn just kind of brushes him off as some weird guy with no eyebrows and continues on his day. He wouldn’t kill his Father upon turning eighteen, because he would have no real reason to want to immediately take over their company. He wouldn’t take up the name Saturn, either, and would probably continue living as Solomon instead- because he actually does have a real name and didn’t just have parents that were really passionate about space. He would continue with his studies for a few more years, learning the ins and outs of the family business, and eventually when his Dad thought he was ready, he would pass the torch on to his son and go off somewhere quiet to retire in luxury.

At least, that would be the plan. Because I have a feeling if Saturn had to deal with his Father’s emotionally fucked up bullshit for five or ten more years than he had, he probably would have been a lot more resentful towards him than he is now, and wouldn’t hesitate to screw him over in any way he possibly could. Still, his life would end up being pretty mundane. He would be a successful businessman, live surrounded by wealth and people completely willing to answer to his beck and call, and probably die lonely and miserable without any notable non-Pokemon friends to speak of.

Now the other way. The other way is a little more fun.

Saturn’s feelings towards Cyrus were by no means healthy, and I will make no attempts to sugarcoat that. Literally the main reason why he was drawn to him in the first place was because he felt as though Cyrus was the only person in his life thus that had treated him like a human being and not a trophy to be put on display. Cyrus. That says something about his upbringing. Because Saturn was extraordinarily sheltered, he was and still is very easy to manipulate if you know which strings to pull. He’s aware of this now post DPP, but back then he wasn’t, so a few nice words and he would be totally willing to move mountains for you. Or stab his Dad and cover up the murder just so he could gain control of the family business and hand it over to someone else.

I’ve also mentioned before that he’s very easily influenced by his environment. DPP Saturn was a monster. He blew up a goddamn lake. He killed people. His logic was more or less that everything he did was for the greater good, and he used it to justify terrible things that still pretty much haunt him to this very day.

Combine his “because you were nice to me” complex, his flawed logic and toss in a dead Cyrus and you get a vengeful megalomaniac of a Team Leader out for blood. He would do anything he possibly could to see Cyrus’ goals to the very end, of course, but before that, he would systematically track everyone down involved in his death and slaughter them without mercy- all so they couldn’t interfere with things, of course, and totally not because Cyrus senpai was dead and he was heartbroken and pissed. The true aims of Team Galactic would do nothing to deter him; if anything, it would just give him justification for copious amounts of violence that would have otherwise horrified him. Because would it all really even matter in the end?

Sapphire tried to huddle deeper into her coat as they trekked through the deep snow. Sapphire had been awed by the snow at first, but the longer she was out in the cold the more she disliked it. Being out in it for too long left a familiar burn in her fingertips, far too similar to Kyogre’s power for her liking. She had to resist the urge to roll her eyes as the young man in front of her droned on, and her snarky reply was slightly muffled by the layers of her scarf. “Trust me buddy, if I hadn’t been assigned to this mission i wouldn’t even be here. I’m just a grunt, I can only imagine what Team Rocket wants with this place.”

She wasn’t overly familiar with the legends of Sinnoh, but she had heard something had gone down here, similar to the Hoenn catastrophe, in that it involved ledgendaries. This time she did roll her eyes and noticeably to boot. “Yes, because messing with the ledgendaries of any region is a good idea. I’m from Hoenn— we know that better than most.” She stopped as she felt a chill, different from the obvious chill of the cold.

Great.

[Great idea Rockets, send the girl with bits of the ledgendary sea spirit in her to go investigate other holy sights. This can only turn out well.] Sapphire muttered to herself in her head, this whole place had her feeling uncomfortable, like she was most certainly somewhere she shouldn’t be. She knew the only reason she had been sent along was because she had research experience, she was the daughter of a renowned Pokemon Professor.

As the blue-haired man in front of her spoke again, Sapphire nodded and pulled out Toro’s pokeball, letting the fire type emerge in a flash of light. “She should be able to keep good light going, feel free to quit the whining anytime.”

"Presumably, they don't want anything good." Saturn muttered dryly. Honestly, he would have hoped Galactic's prior actions would have deterred people from tampering with forces they couldn't hope to control, but apparently he was wrong. There was always someone somewhere formulating nefarious plans to change things. The Commander had thought at the time they were doing something good, but it was now very much apparent to him after the fact that they were simply one group of many in a long line of individuals who thought tampering with physical gods would turn out in their favor. It never did, quite frankly.

"It's going to be cold inside, but we won't have to deal with this degree of falling snow." One would have thought with Saturn being from the Sinnoh region he would have grown accustomed to the cold by that point. However, the majority of his childhood had been spent indoors, in a controlled environment. Even once he managed to dispose of his Father and gain some degree of freedom, he never really went far; Team Galactic had become his priority after that, and they had other Commanders there that could oversee the majority of the fieldwork. Saturn himself was much better at simply holding down the fort and making sure things continued to run smoothly at their headquarters; the instances when something was important enough to require him to leave were few and far between, and even then, it was rare that he actually got his hands dirty. They had Grunts for that.

He glanced over his shoulder at the Fire type, before rolling his eyes in response to her words. "Oh, I'm sorry." The Commander drawled, his tone completely lacking even a hint of something apologetic. "Forgive me for being annoyed that a group of power-hungry psychopaths wishes to tamper with powers far beyond their control. Clearly nothing bad can come of that- and I'm so honored to be forced into the middle of things against my will." He let out a huff, before turning around to wander into the ruins.

"As if the legends don't have enough against me to begin with." The fact that he distinctly felt like he was being watched didn't do much to help matters.

"I don’t know what you Rockets would want with any of these…" Saturn felt the need to comment, raising one hand to shield his face as a particularly strong gust of wind threatened to cover it with snow. He might have been a Sinnoh native, but that didn’t mean he was a fan of the cold by any means. "Galactic already went here years ago; they found nothing of importance, save for a few paintings and some dusty old rocks. Unless you’re looking to profit somehow in the useless tourist attraction business, I see no reason why you should even be here." The path before them was thick with untouched snow, indicating that no one else had walked on it in quite a while- that, or any signs that they had ever been there had been quickly covered up by the harsh wind and relentlessly falling flakes. Saturn attempted to bury his face a bit more into his jacket, tightening his grip slightly on the lantern he was holding in one hand; the last thing they needed was for the Commander to extinguish their only source of light on accident, after all.

"You shouldn’t be tampering with this sort of thing, anyways; it never ends well for anyone when the legends of Sinnoh get involved." If anyone knew from personal experience, it was Saturn. "Johto is a different story entirely; I’m not nearly as familiar with their myths, but I’m sure angering anything probably wouldn’t help anyone. You Rockets better not be trying to get me killed; it won’t go over very well.” Letting out an irritated huff, he came to a stop once they neared the ruins. The snow was thinner here, with a pale path of rocks leading up to the gaping mouth of the temple, just barely visible amongst the relentless white. Large, pointed stones surrounded them, jutting up proudly towards the sky despite the harsh weather and time itself doing everything in it’s power to bring them down. Experimentally, Saturn poked one with the tip of one boot, before glancing over his shoulder at the individual following him.

"Well. We’re here." As if the obvious needed to be stated. "If you have a Pokemon on you that’s capable of lighting up the dark, I would suggest you bring it out now, otherwise we’re probably going to have to rely on the lantern. I want to get this over and done with as soon as possible, so don’t keep me waiting while you dawdle over pointless decisions."

Saturn wasn't having a very good day.

Though to be fair, for the Galactic Commander, good days were relatively few and far between.

It seemed almost as though he was in a permanent state of irritation to some people, and to an extent, that assumption was actually quite true. Perhaps his standards were always a bit too high to meet, and maybe he expected a bit too much out of people, though Saturn swore he had never been this annoyed so often when he was back in his own headquarters, surrounded by his own subordinates. Rocket was very different from Galactic; it was a fact that he had long since recognized, just as he had also recognized his inability to change things. As a result, the Commander had instead tried his best to adapt to his new surroundings, in the hopes that it would spare him a migraine of twelve. It had... Slightly, at least. Though there were still days in which it was inevitable that something would end up getting on Saturn's nerves.

Today was one of those days, only instead of one or two somethings, there were several. And each one was more frustrating than the last. Between papercut-induced trips to the infirmary because some people believed submitting paperwork in paper was apparently superior to just getting it done digitally, to incompetent Grunts making a scene and blocking off an entire hallway because everyone and their Mother wanted to watch two idiots smack each other around like eight year olds on an elementary school playground, Saturn's patience was running dangerously low. Even more so than usual, anyways, as he had a natural lack of tolerance for extraordinary acts of ignorance and stupidity.

He had just been heading back to his room in the hopes that an hour or twelve of Minecraft would be enough to help calm him down, when someone he had never met before just so happened to bump into him. It was a minor offense at best, but the Commander was already extraordinarily irritable to begin with, so he couldn't help but snap. "Would you watch where you're going?!"

Well, shit. She’d really gotten herself into something she couldn’t back out on now. Or perhaps she could. Instead of saying what she really wanted to, she could just as easily bring up something completely different and irrelevant. Boy was she indecisive. Not only that, but thinking wasn’t apparently something she did very often— at least, not in social situations.

Oh well, it’s not like she brought up something too touchy. Her dilemma was the issue of finding the right way to say it. She was hardly prepared, it was something she just got herself into on a whim. Now that the moment was right, it was just a matter of saying the right words.
