I'm at chapter 136 of Usogui (a.k.a. barely 1/5th through, guess who's losing this time gamble? It's me!) and I can finally say I'm have started to truly enjoy it, let's go!

I'm really enjoying Baku as a character, the guy is what I want from a gambling manga protagonists, smug smart guy who's a wimp at fights. I'm not feeling Kaiji, but we'll see...

Ah, my bad, I got Kaji's name wrong. I'm about 200 chapters in now and I'm very much enjoying this, sadly because the manga is so text heavy (all the rule explaining and reiterating) I feel like I'm reading at a slower pace than what's normal for me, is this how being a slow reader feels like?

I still don't get what my fellow pretentious manga readers were implying about this at all sadly, it sure is fun and it can look good on occasion. But is it saying something? Not really, it appears to be trying to communicate a certain collection of thoughts about human nature, but it has done a weak job of sounding convincing, even when I'm fully immersed in this particular world so, yeah nothing worthy getting pretentious about it as of yet.

Another fun silly thing about this is that most characters have to have a gimmick, so our main guy has to say his line and eat the plum sweet everytime, yes this other guy blows spit bubbles and of course this other guy has wheelies.

I believe I've just figured it out why fellow manga readers get pretentious about it, a shame for me because: A. There's so much info to keep in mind for an arc and B. I tend to dismiss stuff I assume to be irrelevant from my brain on instinct. But yeah, that's some good stuff indeed, I enjoy the many different moving pieces

Ime manga readers get pretentious everytime when there's at least an overarching plotline instead of little ones that get resolved in one arc. Bonus points if it's 'subtly' set up early on! ahah But this is a mentality one can only afford when reading certain manga; when you read a book/saga there's always the main plot and the many subplot ramifications that each reader can find more or less enthralling (but still has to keep track of). Same with tv series, but those may be easier to remember.

Also yeah the scanlation team was a real one with the reviews (i sighed with relief the first time i saw one of them, I felt mind read lol). Another upside is that it serves the purpose of answering the most common misconceptions of a confused reader. Maybe it'll prevent some to inevitably crowd every forum/online community dedicated to usogui discourse/analysis, once it gets more famous.

I believe manga readers tend to get a lot more excited about overarching plots than other types of media fans because of how little that tends to happen in the medium? It maybe be a bias of mine, but I feel many manga that try to do this either drop many of the ideas halfway there or just never acknowledged them at all so many manga fans get really, well, pretentious about it, personally, I tend to prefer good character writing to an overly complex plot, but we can have both so I’d be creating false a dichotomy if I tried to say there can only be one and not the other.

Although, I 100% prefer the more pretentious type of fans who praise every little thing about a work than dudebro types who only engage with it at the surface level. Have you seen these “power scaling” type of videos, but for “smart characters"? I made the mistake of going on yt for some Usogui stuff and felt my brain melting a bit after seeing about three videos like that, but hey I found one good MAD for Usogui so it was worth it.

The reviews are going to be life savers for frequently asked questions, the team really held our hands and walked us through the steps of more complex arcs, no shame on us because there was so much from Krama Tower and forward, but showing a potential new reader those reviews would be a funny way to intimidate, hahaha

Well said. From what I've understood, a mangaka tries to make a big break and focuses only on writing a fairly strong start/likeable characters and doesn't have the time to write a complete rough draft of the whole plot with weekly deadlines.

Ahahahah I saw one, it was so silly. I was only looking for pretty edits that didn't give me a headache. Alas! Care to share what you found? :) I think you're bound to always meet people who are content with surface level reading even if sometimes it feels like they're poisoning the water. Nevertheless, you'll eventually meet people who are willing to go out there delve deeper.

I believe there are whole books on how many anime\manga tend to focus on making compelling characters first and then focus on whatever the plot will be later. But the fact Usogui was weekly is flabbergasting, Sako really beat so many odds by writing something like it weekly, I could not do it at all.

I don’t mind surface level readings, I know not everyone is into doing literary analysis for fun, but if the majority of people are doing it, it does annoy me a bit, I cannot lie. Omg! I don't have in my heart to rickroll when it comes to more niche stuff, too cruel, hehehe. Ahh, a fellow seeker, I even went to niconico to see if there was some more Usogui stuff so I know the feeling of wanting to see more of it way too well.

The it's not that deep crowd is something I actively avoid.

I know super eye patch wolf would engage with Usogui with a good mix of humor and earnesty in attempt to understand it, one of the few out there that can do it
