Alex listened carefully, full attention on the young man in question. He said nothing, even after Jamie has stopped talking. He was still looking into the other man’s eyes, squinting. Assessing.

And then finally, after a minute of silence, he said, “Alright.”

He slid the sunglasses back on, pulling out a business card—“Alex Canton: Immortal Soul Records.” He never gave these fucking things out. He didn’t network. He didn’t give a shit. This music was for him—for whatever he wanted it to be. And for right now? He was fairly sure he wanted this kid.

“Come by tomorrow night. Bring whatever you need. I’m interested. But I want to see you in action first.” He stood from the seat, already making his way towards the door, but not before pausing and turning around.

“If you’re serious about this, we can make this work. I’m not looking for kids who want to be rock stars, alright? Don’t waste my time.”

          so  ,  maybe  this  wasn’t  exactly  what  he’d  imagined.  there  might  not  be  some  big  break  ,  but  that  was  okay.  someone  took  time  out  of  their  day  to  acknowledge  his  music  ,  to  give  him  some  kind  of  chance.  that  was  enough.  with  a  quick  nod  ,  jamie  put  the  card  in  his  pocket.  ❝  okay  ...  ❞

          so  ,  there  he  was.  the  next  day.  guitar  case  in  hand  ,  cigarette  between  his  lips  ---  ---  and  his  nerves  already  beyond  shot.  he  was  up  all  night  ,  wracking  his  brain  to  try  and  find  the  one  song  he  could  play  for  this  guy.  in  front  of  him.  one  on  one.  dressed  in  the  one  decent  button  up  he  owned  ,  his  cleanest  jeans  and  some  scuffed  up  shoes  he’s  had  for  years.

          a  tattooed  hand  produced  three  quick  knocks  upon  the  other’s  door  ,  lower  lip  between  his  teeth.  it’d  be  fine.  everything  was  going  to  be  fine  ,  he  can  do  this.  god  ,  why  did  he  knock  like  that  ?

          ❝  hi  !  ❞  too  quick  of  a  greeting  once  that  door  is  opened  ;  he  was  just  excited.  ❝  so  ,  um  ...  i  told  my  band  that  i  was  stoppin’  by  today.  they’re  excited.  i’m  excited.  ❞

“Good,” He said. He took a moment to look before gesturing to a table that was pretty clean. He took a seat, setting the disk on the table between them. “Sit,” He said. And he did not plan on asking a second time. Once settled, then and only then did Alex take off his sunglasses. Brilliant green eyes looked out from a beautiful pale face that showed no signs of even slightly fucking around.

A single finger reached out, and tapped the disk.

“Talk to me about this.” His single command. He was interested in one thing and one thing only: if this kid was worth his goddamn time. There was a lot of potential, but also a thousand ways this could go wrong. Alex wanted to be sure before he started giving the kid anything, even his opinion on the song.

          he  was  ...  alarming  ,  to  say  the  least.  a  man  who  seemed  to  be  all  business  ,  or  simply  didn’t  care.  either  way  ,  he  had  an  aura  about  him  that  jamie  had  never  seen  before.  confidence  taken  to  a  whole  new  level  ,  maybe.  whatever  it  was  ,  a  part  of  jamie  was  desperate  to  seek  it  out.  though  he  followed  his  commands  ,  sitting  across  from  him  with  his  hands  folded  in  his  lap.

          for  a  moment  ,  he  said  nothing  ---  taken  aback  by  the  other’s  appearance.  but  once  he  composed  himself  ,  words  flowed  easily.

          ❝  music  is  somethin’  i’ve  always  been  interested  in.  it  was  my  outlet  ,  ever  since  i  was  a  li’l  kid.  my  mom  used  to  play  music  throughout  the  house  and  dance  around  ,  singin’  along  at  the  top  of  her  lungs.  it  was  ...  simple  to  her  ,  but  even  back  then  ,  i  knew  it  was  somethin’  more  to  me.  ❞  jamie  cleared  his  throat  ,  looking  down  at  the  disc.  ❝  i  started  writing  music  when  i  was  ‘bout  fourteen  ,  a  couple’a  years  after  she  passed  away.  i  didn’t  know  what  else  to  do  with  ...  the  shit  i  was  feelin’.  and  then  i  met  our  drummer  ,  and  she  felt  for  music  the  way  i  did.  that  it  wasn’t  ‘bout  the  money  ,  or  the  fame  ,  or  the  credibility.  we  wanted  ...  we  wanted  to  help  people  with  our  music  ,  the  way  it  helped  us.  ❞  finally  ,  jamie  dared  to  meet  the  other’s  eyes.  ❝  i  always  figured  ...  if  one  of  our  songs  could  help  only  one  person  ,  then  that  was  enough.  and  i  still  feel  that  way.  ❞

Alex liked the personal touch when it came to matters like these. He took music every seriously—had for centuries. He didn’t have time for every up-and-comer who wanted to become famous or a rockstar. Hell, it had been some time since he’d taken on anyone, mostly producing his own work with great success where it mattered.

Fame didn’t matter. The music… the music mattered.

And once in a blue moon, he found someone who seemed to feel that. And once in a bluemoon, he’d travel to whatever corner of the world to find that person. This time, he was barely an hour from his house.

He looked around the diner, fully ignoring the kid as he stepped around the space. He knew full well the sunglasses on his face probably cost more than this kid was earning in a week. But, he wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t important. His face didn’t react to anything he said nothing except a soft “mm.”

Satisfied with his look, he finally turned on the kid. He pulled out the demo CD from inside his jacket, holding it up.

“Is this you?” He asked.

          to  jamie  ,  music  was  everything.  it  had  never  been  about  the  fame.  it  was  about  having  that  one  thing  to  express  himself  ,  that  one  common  denominator  between  him  and  this  little  group  of  misfits  he’d  put  together. he  begged  for  piano  lessons  for  years  ,  taught  himself  to  play  guitar.  improved  his  writing  and  found  people  who  shared  his  passion.  to  jamie  ,  that’s  what  all  of  this  was  about.

          this  guy  either  came  from  money  ,  or  built  himself  up  to  where  he  was  now.  either  way  ,  jamie  felt  a  certain  pang  of  fear  while  looking  at  him.  and  the  sight  of  their  demo  in  his  hand  ,  well  ...  that  only  made  it  worse.

          he  found  himself  cracking  his  knuckles  nervously  ,  before  wiping  his  hands  upon  his  apron.  ❝  uh  ---  ---  ❞  he  chuckled  ,  looking  down  and  taking  a  shaky  breath.  god  ,  he  never  thought  someone  would  ever  approach  him  about  this  shit.

          ❝  yeah  !  yeah  ,  that’s  me.  that  is  ...  my  voice  ,  yes.  ❞  alright  ,  take  it  down  a  notch  or  two.

          it  was  a  stupid  idea  ,  really.  a  spur  of  the  moment  decision  ,  a  risk  taken  he  almost  immediately  regretted.  their  drummer  backed  him  up  ,  of  course  ,  like  she  always  did.  but  jamie  himself  didn’t  have  the  balls  to  send  the  demo  out  ---  ---  so  she  did  it.  sent  it  to  every  label  and  producer  that  came  to  mind  ,  leaving  nothing  but  anxiety  and  anticipation.

          like  any  normal  human  being  ,  jamie  brought  everything  to  work  with  him.  for  the  last  week  or  so  ,  he’s  been  of  his  game  so  to  speak.  dropping  plates  ,  silverware  ,  spilling  dirty  dishwater  down  the  front  of  his  shirt.  what  was  he  so  worried  for  ?  it’s  not  like  anything  would  come  of  this  act.

          he’s  in  the  process  of  clearing  one  of  the  last  tables  ,  messy  hair  falling  down  in  front  of  chocolate  brown  eyes.  there’s  only  a  half  hour  before  the  diner  closes  ,  though  he’d  be  there  until  two  a.m.  cleaning  up  after  everyone.  like  usual.  like  every  single  night.

          the  bell  above  the  door  makes  him  jump  ,  the  clank  of  dishes  crashing  together  sounding  throughout  the  building.  it’d  been  so  quiet.  those  eyes  cast  a  glance  towards  the  door  ,  where  they  catch  sight  of  ...  someone  who  clearly  doesn’t  belong  here.  someone  who  probably  doesn’t  come  ‘round  these  parts  of  town  often.

          ❝  ---  ---  uh  ,  we  close  in  ‘bout  half  an  hour  ,  so  ...  i  don’t  think  you’re  gonna  get  much  service  right  now.  ❞
