nightmares racked peeta's mind tonight , never the same but always deluded with visions the capitol forced into his brain. even though he was safe now the memories threaten to stay with him forever. there were a few failed attempts to fall back asleep but to no avail , soon choosing to make his way to the kitchen , his hands now kneading at the dough on the counter. baking was a mindless activity for peeta , the recipes ingrained in the back of his mind from a young age. it was nice , no thoughts: yeast , sugar , water , milk , butter , flour , salt. easy to remember , his skilled hands making quick work of it.

as the dough is set in a bowl and covered peeta's attention is turned towards the hall , hearing the sound of someone stirring. " did i wake you ? " his tone apologetic as a half smile is shown to katniss. " i was planning on surprising you with cinnamon bread when you got up. it's not even close to ready yet though. "

silence fills the air for a moment , just letting himself get lost in her features. sometimes , in moments like this , peeta often thinks about how his eyes used to quickly move away from hers. making sure katniss never caught him staring ; but now with his feelings out in the open , it was nice to have her looking back at him too. " katniss .. " he begins , a soft sigh pushing from his lips and his hand slides into her gently. " you don't have to .. it's really okay. " his gaze falling to look at their hands together , watching his thumb softly stroking over the back of her hand before looking back at her. " it's nice , being here like this. calm almost. "

i went to the bech yesterday and we stayed to watch the sunset so i got to watch peeta's favorite color in person , on the beach. very aesthetic.
