Promise was not quite part of Ulstar’s “programming”. It simply did what it needed to hold its vigil over the other Elder Ones, and to deal with those that could wake up the one sustaining this dream. 

Even while it was borrowing this scholar’s body, this remained. However, it somehow became easier to get humans to forge deals with it. Perhaps it was human nature to be more amicable to those that resembled themselves? But it did not dismiss the uneasy looks it would get. Those faces that presented themselves as what humans considered generous and welcoming.

It did not understand such concepts. However, it knew easily what kinds of humans it convinced to lead it to where one of those under its watch was plotting. The kind that would sooner sacrifice its vessel to that being in order to try to being it out into this world.

Unacceptable. Such acts of betrayal - as the humans would call it - would not stand. It would impede its mission, its duty, its reason for being. It could hear the cries of the human who owned this body from the depths of their shared mind. It was screaming, practically begging.

“This isn’t what you said would happen! You said you wouldn’t hurt humans! You promised! It was part of our deal!”

Correct. Correct. However this was not a betrayal. Could those that threw their lives at the non-existent mercy of one of its malignant kin be considered human anymore? The acts they would be willing to commit would be considered inhumane, correct? 

It brought forth no retort. No reply that the scholar would understand, for as wise and knowledgeable as he was; he was still very much human. All it did as a courtesy was avert their shared vision, away from the dead humans that lay on the ground; eyes deflated and bleeding, bodies torn to shreds with no signs of bleeding, a scene of inhuman murder. These former humans were an attempt to dwindle Ulstar’s power, and it simply did its duty.

Promise, vow, bond: words it knew, but did not understand. All it had was a duty, and a voice to scream the morals of universal specks at it when it did something he disagreed with.

How foolish, did he still refuse to acknowledge that this would be how humanity would continue to survive?
