If you weren’t moved by #BlackOutDay, you might want to check your pulse. Even the racist white backlash was rebuffed in the best possible way.

Making headlines
I spent my afternoon today at a middle school in Long Island, NY. talking to and observing kids (Black and Latinos) who are identified as having severe behavior problems. I pulled out my ipad to check in on #BlackOutDay. I was so excited by what I was seeing, I started mentioning it in random conversations. One of the kids asked what it was for and I explained it the best of my ability. My ipad went around then talks of their next hairstyles and how pretty everyone was started. Then this one kid who all the teachers are scared of (because he’s smarter than all of them and is unfairly categorized as having a behavior problem because of this) said “Yeah but this won’t stop them from killing another Mike Brown.” This was the first time since the semester started, that the class as a whole went quiet. We ended up having this big talk about black people in the media, Ferguson, Justice for muslims and more with 11 year olds. They stopped trying to be funny and rude and actually let us hear their thoughts and it was an amazing experience to be apart of.
Their teacher praised me after the class was over, praise I didn’t deserve, praise you deserve for being brave enough to post your beautiful awe inspiring melanin all over my dash.
Thank You & Stay Black ya’ll.
This is amazing!
