Akira Production Report (1988) / Line Tests / 24fps ‘in ones’
Amazing line tests from the ‘Akira Production Report’ documentary. 30 years on, Akira is still the only hand-animated feature film to adopt such a high frame rate.
Orphaned as a baby, Maya fared pretty poorly as a child thanks to her weird looks and the ongoing taboo behind adoption in South Korea. She spent summers with possible families, but ultimately ended up back at her orphanage when those summers ended. She was friendly, but quiet and anxious, and took to escaping inside of books after spending a summer with a boy named Jumin Han who introduced her to her first favorite stories.
When she turned twelve, Maya ran away from her orphanage and was quickly intercepted by two local gang members after trying to steal their food. They took her to their leader, Min-Soo, who gave Maya the choice of joining the gang or enjoying a beating at the hands of the girls she stole from. Maya chose the former. She spent about four years in Min-Soo's gang, known as The Sirens, where she was nicknamed Little Fox. Maya learned how to fight, kiss, and even lead a little bit under Min-Soo's harsh direction. At 16, Maya left the gang, hit with the reality of her violent lifestyle after having relentlessly beaten a rival gang leader's arm with a steel bat until every bone was shattered.
Determined to change her ways and do some good, Maya enrolled in both standard and cram classes and took on several jobs in order to get herself through high school. She graduated one year late, and just one week later, began recieving mysterious messages on her phone from an unknown sender.
The strange messenger sent her to an apartment she'd never been to, convinced her to break in, and then left her logged into a private app created for the members of Rika's Fundraising Association. Maya found herself logged into a group chat with them, and only minutes later (thanks to her desperate need for a job) she agreed to join the Association as their party coordinator.
Unfortunately for Maya, this was all planned from the get-go. Saeran Choi, the unknown sender, eventually came for her and six other girls who had been planted within the Association to gather information for Rika. All six girls shared a special genetic code that allowed Rika's new project, a technologically advanced religious cult known as Mint Eye, to "reset" their memories. The girls could also do it at will, though Maya never chose to. This, combined with her sturbborn will to fight, made her a particularly problematic test subject.
After a whirlwind relationship with another RFA member went sour, Maya turned back to books and writing, creating stories to keep herself levelled. Her best friend, Saeyoung Choi, was keenly aware of the post-breakup slump Maya went into, so one night, he hacked into her computer and sent her writings to several publishing companies. Before she knew it, Maya was sitting in meetings with publishers, and landed a book deal based on a draft that Seven had sent one publisher. Given the opportunity to travel for her research, Maya chose to move to Japan for what was supposed to be three months, and ended up in a town known as Morioh.
She settled in well and made a wonderful group of friends while studying the town's supernatural lore for her book. This is also where Maya met Toshikazu Hazamada, her current boyfriend, and a handful of other people who were probably best described as Stand users. Despite her superpowered friends, she ended up leading a fairly peaceful life in Morioh, until Mint Eye came for her again.
Kidnapped by a Mint Eye operative known as Eunjung, Maya spent a week holed up in various cells in between nonsensical experiments. Rika had discovered something about Maya and her "sisters" -- the other girls who had been involved from the start -- and wanted to test their resistance to a new reset treatment that would remove specific memories, as opposed to memories set over a period of time. Saeyoung, Hazamada, and Shotaro Kaneda broke into Mint Eye and freed the girls, who then took on Rika, before taking Saeran with them as they escaped.
Now settled back into her place in Morioh, Maya is content with spending most of her time working or hanging out with the people she loves. She does her best to avoid trouble, but, well, one can only do so much before the tide comes in.
