Maybe bee’s fans just don’t real enough period romances because Blake is literally a gender-switched version of: the Brooding Count who, jaded by the thought of noble idleness, runs off to be a privateer or freedom fighter, only to reconsider his choice when he recognizes that his dearest confidante, and those around him, have become villains. Appalled by his fall into corruption, he flees that life, but is overcome with shame and cannot return home. So he travels to another country, disguised as a commoner, where he meets the most beautiful, charming, generous damsel and finds himself irresistibly drawn to her company.
