let me say though after feeling like the most shallow person ever for liking it on a solely aesthetic basis while aware of how bad it is but simultaneously somehow wondering if i even know how to read and maybe i'm just mortally stupid, I read the 1897 atlantic monthly review about the "disappointing" characters that are "mere outlines" on "barren pages" that are "badly wrought" with "no plot, no development" but with some praise for the scenic descriptions and I'm like ohh I'm a genius actually.
